  • Today we are heading into deep snow! I want to see how far we can push our 3rd gen Toyota Tacoma's and of course try to have a great time while doing it! The owner of the white Tacoma is my friend Maxx Powell. We have a lot of overland and off-road content planed this year so if that is something you are interested in be sure to subscribe and follow us on social media. The Rubicon, Moab and Baja all will be seen on my channel this year and we will build this Tacoma to be a one of a kind do-it-all truck! Enjoy the episode!

    Crawl control is basically what we do manually when you ride the brakes with open diff or lockers to control wheel spin. I think it's a matter of getting better at it and understanding how to use it.
    I have an 07 titan, 4.11, 35, Detroit, open frt. And was able to mimic a Toyota's crawl ctrl. Higher the ratio the more you can mimic. Learned manual way from someone years ago. Keep practicing

    How lucky we are to drive less than a hour away from home and be in such beauty. How funny that Mr Baker holds 2 world records for snowfall .

  • @TSuave
    @TSuave Před 3 lety

    Being from Canada I find snow is alot like sand, once you break traction just don't spin... Snow melts under tire spin and freezes almost as soon as it melts this causing very slick surface under your tire and your alot more stuck, the best option for snow is less tire spin. The more your tires pack snow into their grooves like a snow man snow packs to snow!

  • @80rew
    @80rew Před 3 lety +36

    Crawl control wasn’t really designed for snow because the tires need to be able to bring material under the tires and snow just don’t move around like dirt and sand or gravel

    • @ashergreenfield4180
      @ashergreenfield4180 Před 3 lety +5

      I’ve used crawl control to get me out of a snowbank twice as deep as these guys were in. It took 5-10 minutes to get the traction, but it saved me that day. I think they needed a little more patience.

    • @camillethetacoturd7210
      @camillethetacoturd7210 Před 3 lety

      It works really really well going Down slick / snowy hills! Other then that I agree about using it in the snow... in the right circumstances it works well in snow but other times it doesn’t help much. Besides putting it in call and getting out of the truck to shove shit under the tires while it’s working... that’s got me out once or twice hahap

    • @ldooffroad1823
      @ldooffroad1823 Před 3 lety +3

      You're right. Snow is so different. It packs up under the axles, and lifts your tires off the ground. This happened to me last November. I spent 2 hours digging the packed-solid snow out from under everything just to get the tires back on the ground.

    • @kadinhendrickson8968
      @kadinhendrickson8968 Před 3 lety +3

      When snow gets compressed into the tread, that compression causes heat which starts to melt the snow into the tread making the centrifugal force of the spinning tire harder to clear what was once snow, and now ice out of the tread.

    3:53 Quick tip with open diffs for anyone who doesn't know. If one tires spinning others sitting still, use your left foot to drag the brakes a tiny bit. The added friction on the spinning tire can jog a bit of movement out of the stationary tire. He probably would have been able to get a little more distance there by dragging the brakes some 😉.
    Loving the wheeling vids, wish I could get out there right now!

    Thanks for the video, it's interesting to see what your stock truck will go through. The nice thing about snow is one can shovel one's way out - as long as one doesn't slide too far off the road....
    We got within a whisker of that last week trying to find some coyotes that had been beating on buddy's dog - the road above his ranch had much more ice under the snow than we initially thought. As always, since we're back down typing, we must have made it okay, you know? Stay well.

    If you are using crawl control, keep your foot off the gas pedal! You were revving the engine, spinning the wheels and overriding the CC. Don't think it would have made any difference though, CC won't help much when you are high-centered in snow. Even so, thanks for a nice video!

    Traction control has always gotten me closer to getting stuck than with it shut completely off and running open diffs in the snow, I don’t have the luxury of crawl control or rear locker on my trd sport though! Awesome video!
