  • Corey Taylor wrote a ballad about his divorce, but the song grew to encompass yet another tragic loss. This is the story of Slipknot's "Snuff," one of the saddest metal songs ever.

The lyrics matter, voices matter, how you orchestrate to play a certain song in a band matters. I don’t care if people don’t like it. If they don’t like it, they are being too optimistic.

For me it's savatage's "when the crowds are gone" the screamed vocals after the solo always make me tear up it's the best ballad I've ever heard. In the words of Jon Oliva (former savatage singer) the meaning of the song is:
"It's the life story of a musician who has been trying to become successful all his life. In vain, of course and so finally he breaks down. However, that's not the main issue, because this can happen in many different ways. Suicide, an overdose of drugs... I've seen it happen around me, so I know what I'm talking about. And that goes for our producer, Paul O'Neill, who helped me write the lyrics, as well. He also knew musicians who went down because of the lack of success. The musician that this song is about spent his whole life composing one song, that was meant to be his absolute masterpiece. Finally, he completes the song, but then he's too old himself to accomplish anything with it. He's past the height of his glory. Then finally when the song gets airplay, it is too late, because it is at his own funeral."

I remember the first time I heard this song. It really hit me hard when I listened to it, because it reminded me of a friend who betrayed me when I did nothing but love them like family.
It was also the song that introduced me to Slipknot, and Slipknot paved the way for me when I went to listen to other genres of Metal. It was thanks to them that I got into listening to stuff like Death Metal and Black Metal.
Those so-called “Metal Elitists” can say whatever they want about Slipknot, calling them “not real Metal” or whatever. For me, Slipknot will always be the greatest band ever.

Only those who truly don't understand the beauty of art, don't understand how amazing exploring new new levels of ones craft can be. Like seriously, I love this Album Snuff came from. It's my very first album and when I became crazy about the band. Now that I'm aware of the Meaning of this track, I love this song, album and band even more. Like seriously this takes heart to put so much of yourself into your craft. Gonna jam to this album today. Slipknot's still an amazing band today. Don't care what anyone says.

I was going through a similar thing when this came out. I was with this girl, who I considered the only one for me, we couldn't get enough of each other, we were together against everything, each chemically attracted to the other, almost like magnets, shared everything, and hated being apart. The last couple years together, we developed an addiction to a bad letter of the alphabet, and decided to take turns getting clean, I was on a maintenance dose, over a few months got her clean, then as I was going through absolute hell, she cheated on me, I wanted to forgive her, I wanted things to go back to how they were, but I also knew I had to take a stand, I was sick physically, and emotionally, while I suffered alone, she moved on, and I let her. I didn't have the strength to fight, but I hoped she would realize what she'd given up, only to find out that it didn't mean as much to her as it did to me. I had to live with my decisions, and let the one person in this world I knew I loved, move on without me. That was years ago. I died inside to do the right thing, we're both ok now, but too much happened to even be friends after that. It's incredibly hard to trust anyone after you go through such an intense relationship, you move on anyway, fuck it.

I cannot relate to the concept of needing all songs by an artist to be heavy, soft, or whatever descriptor you want to use. Music is great for the wide variety of styles and emotions it can convey. This is a great one regardless of how it sounds compared to the rest of the catalog.

    Great song. Great video.
I had the privilege of meeting Paul at a signing before a show in Brisbane, Australia. I shook his hand after he signed my Iowa album and said "thanks mate, see you tonight".
He was the only member of Slipknot that showed up to the signing that day. So glad he did. I'll never forget meeting him.

Snuff was the song that got me into Slipknot, for years I had a friend who was a big fan of the band and he tried for many years to get me into their music but I didn't seemed to understand why he liked it so much, to me it just sounded like noise, until Snuff came out, at the time had broken up from a relationship and I felt so emotionally connected to the song that immediately became one of my favorite songs, after that I started to listen to more of their songs with another perspective and quickly became a fan of the band.

Sometimes an artists greatest work can come with a change of pace. The Cranberries doing a harder song with Zombie as apposed to their usual soft rock to express anger and sorrow over war was equally masterful.
