Never understood the chirping Heatley got after the fact. He was one of my favourite players to watch in that mid-2000s era, and there is no denying he was deadly in that period. The way you hear people talk about it, you'd think he was a Johnathan Cheechoo 2.0, but he was pretty consistent for quite a few years.

Heatley was one of my most despised players. He was a legendary Sabre killer. In just the four seasons with Ottawa from 2005-06 through 2008-09 he scored 18G and 21A for 39 points in 30 games against Buffalo.

My understanding was that Heathly wasn't getting the icetime he wanted in Ottawa when he asked for the trade.
Ottawa at the time was a good team that got desimated by the Cap. Spezza and Alfredsson leaving was an ownership thing.
A few years after the cup run even with the arena selling out every single night Melnik went public that he wasn't making any money. He then traded away all the supporting cast of players at or near the deadline.
That summer Spezza demanded a trade and a year or two after Alfredsson was not offered a fair contract.
Start of fan not showing up to games

I miss Heatley just because his time in Ottawa was absolutely dominant and the amount of winning by the team during that time was insane. I still fondly look back at the post-lockout season where division rivals played eight games against each other and Ottawa beat Toronto all eight times by mostly blowout wins. Toronto couldn't salvage the one point they needed to make the playoffs, so it was kinda sweet redemption after getting the shit kicked out of us in the pre-lockout playoffs.

Heatley isn't the 1st player to turn 30 and lose their legs. There's been a lot of players that hit 30 and suddenly have a rapid decline. Especially know with how fast and young the NHL is.
Just look at Lucic. Scores 20 goals with Los angels. Oilers sign this hulking 28yr old multiple 20 goal scorer. Was scores 23 goals that 1st year. Hit 29 and suddenly BOOM can't keep up with the game anymore.
Brad Richards had a pretty decent year that 1st year in NY but after turning 31 rapid decline career over 4yrs later. Scott Gomez was a fairly decent player 60 70 80 pt guy hit 29 and the wheels fell off. Vinney Lecavelier Amazing Player. Hit 30 rapid decline out of the game 5 years later. 30-40-50 goal guy 90-100pts guy his last 2 season he scored 8 and 10 goals 20 and 18 points.
People that think 25-30 is NHL prime still are sadly mistaking.
Guys can't play the game anymore to 40-45 or 50 like howe.

Was Heatley the one that got drafted high and when interviewed said he didnt really want to play but played because he knew he was good or something to that effect?

Pierre Turgeon has overwhelming hockey hall of fame stats yet he is never in the conversation. I can understand if some might think no, but why left out of the conversation entirely? Would love to see a video on Pierre Turgeon.

Never recovered from being the only Canadian to not voluntarily leave the bench during the World Juniors brawl in '87.
(not counting Jimmy Waite who thought he'd have to replace Simpson)
The only way to get over that would have been to win the big one; never did.

All I know about him is the he was the 1st of two players on the NHL 2004 cover, got in legal trouble, and got replaced by Joe Sakic and that he uses twitter a lot.

Not him on Twitter, it's a parody account. Heater himself is not actively on Twitter as far as we know.

I think it was the car crash just took longer to show on the outside that he was imploding. also the high numbers after could be related to drugs, that I won't blame him for using to stay in the NHL when at the same time from the inside he's already falling. you can compare his downfall to Bam Margera and his long way down since Ryan Dunn got killed. and Bam wasn't even in the car.

There is a reason why the NHL has a PED program and suspends players for PEDs
