I hope you got excited about altered magic cards. If you ask questions in the comments I'll try to answer them. I have some links to awesome artists below. If you are an awesome artist please post a link to your stuff in the comments. I featured these specific artists because I think they are great but they are not the only artists out there.

Your personal work is actually pretty good, honestly
Yes in a way that he hits the colors rly good but if he would take a little bit more time to get sharp lines it would be almost impossible to tell the difference to some altered cards i have seen
Never had an alter before, but now I want to make one of my edh decks Star Wars themed after seeing that swords to plowshares
If you message me on twitter I'll post a few more star wars alters :)
So nice to see so many of my friends work in your collection DJ. I never realised till today, that you'd made this video, but on behalf of every committed, long-serving alterist, I'd like to thank you. Now can we have a 2019 update!?
I saw all the alters from your deck overview vid, and so this was a perfect follow up! I didn't realize alters were so prevalent, which is really interesting.
Been doing some commissions on altered cards because my friends see my work on Warhammer models. This video puts a lot of perspective in place. Thanks for posting this man!
Thank you for this in-depth and respectful video! Also I quite enjoyed your alters, though I know how easy it is to be self-critical!
I've been waiting for more altered/proxy mtg content on CZcams! Thanks. My personal faves are alters with extended art- or borderless- with all the aspects of the original card left intact. I would however like a set of dual lands with shiny new digital art.
I didn't talk about proxies but that could be a conversation for a video. I think the community is pretty split on their use.
Jumbo Commander- of course I agree. The main reason for that split is ethical I think, but I believe most friendly EDH playgroups have tolerance to proxies, especially in the cases of such super high-dollar cards as original dual lands or other cards that are invaluable to certain strategies, but the value of which lie well beyond the budget of the casual EDH player.
My stance on proxies is don't try to be something you are not. I can't stand the sharpie on a plains representing another magic card. That's so half-ass.
If you never want to own a dual land then own that decision and don't proxy them. Use your creativity to prove that you don't need duals (FYI you don't need them).
If you want to brew with weird cards without buying them then do it. Proxy a ton BUT then actively replace the good ones with real cards and keep tinkering.
If you (and your playgroup) like to permanently run proxies then make them look nice and clean. Own it.
Jumbo Commander totally- I've never played a marked on card in my life and I too hate that. The reason I think of alters and proxies in the same category is because I see them both as ways to have unique and beautiful cards in your deck. In other words, if I would play a proxy in my deck, it would be for the unique art FIRST; I would just as soon Use a Temple of Malady over a card that says," Bayou" but if that bayou was awesome looking- then yeah
i never want to own a dual land they cost thousands...
yet with my modo edh group my duals cost like 0.03 tix...
im used to playing fun decks that run consistently, without getting mana screwed constantly.
ive set up a fully proxied vintage cube for drafting.
and several legacy battle boxes for friends and family.
i buy professionally made ones that look real, but i would never use them in a sanctioned event.
so please tell me why im wrong for using good looking- proxies to play a card game?
heck, most alters arent tournement legal, whats the difference between a proxy and a card alter?
i love altered cards and i do some myself aswell seeing all of these cards makes we wanna get better at doing my cards
Love that Spike Weaver man!! One of my favorite old school pet cards. Respect.
So great to watch videos on mtg alterations, thx man.
Nice collection. As you said, altered cards are for ourselves first and it's like playing with small paintings, which is amazing.
I'm currently collecting a star wars theme pool of modern cards with an artist. Maybe I'll show you some cards on twitter and it would be cool to see other alterations you have. You seem to own a pretty big collection ;)
I'm an artist whom has done alters for myself. Some of my arts people loved so much that they begged me to sell them the card. It's so hard to put a price on something that I personally loved for my own deck. But for someone else to want it in their collection, it's rewarding. I personally enjoy seeing other people's alters. And I have come across a few I wish I could have purchased myself. I have some alters from my sister, that she also did. It's all personal preference.
Awesome video! I really want to try to do some alters of my own. I'm thinking of starting with some lands. I love that new bomb Craterhoof you have. Flying really pushes it over the edge to playable... :-P
It's funny, I would think that people would be upset that I just gave it flying but whenever I play the hoof people just scoop. I should start adding keywords to all of my cards. Maybe scry 2 or annihilator 4
Seems decent. Be sure to add some text to some lands, too. Utility lands are always great!
I would like all of my islands to have "flash", please and thank you.
Somewhere on youtube there's a group that makes their own custom commanders for each other and play games with them. I know those aren't technically altered, but it's actually really cool.
Been wanting for years to get an alter of Hero's Downfall for my Karrthus deck.
Depict a hero, ducking behind a shield, against a dragon. The shield is melting under the dragon's breath weapon.
I almost did that exact alter. My original art was from an illustration of Beowulf but I chose to have my heroes downfall depict Macbeth instead.
Thank you for showing us your collection
That entomb is definitely my favourite! Gorgeous, nice video
He's super talented. I love it too.
I love that Wheel of Fortune! Simple, but very well executed!
Really though, I wish I had an entire EDH deck altered by RKF 🤤🤤🤤
That survival of that fittest... Just... Amazing!
I love John Howe, the original illustrator that interpreted the famous story, but Marta also is amazing for reframing it onto a card and executing it with such precision.
The Strip Mine looks great!
Thank you. I did try really hard. But it's useful to know that untrained people can do an OK job so the details become really important.
kickass. luv the different content.
Mind = BLOWN
Now I want some altered art!
I have a lot of "altered" cards for commander. In fact, they are made with deinked foils and printable transparent slides. You can do them at home at VERY low price and they do look really good, specially the fullarts.
Transparent slides can be fiddly but it's the way to go. I have seen similar alters where people print directly on a deinked foil and it looks faded and blurry.
awesome vid; keep up the good work!
This altered Animate Dead is AWESOME ! 😍
great job on your alters!
These are super cool!
Great video! As someone who is not very familiar to the subject, I would have loved to see some of the financial aspects of it on the video. Maybe in a future video, going further into the prices of the diferent styles of altered arts, how much can you should expect to pay for each, and how much does it influence on the price of the card for reselling them (or buying from another player).
Overall, i would like to see more about the subject in Magic content.
That's a really good question because it is so difficult to navigate the pricing. The value is so subjective. There are alters that actually lower the value of a card and others that add hundreds of dollars of value. There are some alters so specific that it is impossible to find a buyer so what's the value of that card. I would say that full custom alters from reputable people hover around $100. When buying I have a much more pragmatic approach -- "I want a fancy card for my deck, is this around the same price as a foil version?" Then when I see something that is interesting, unique, or special to me I try to imagine the effort that went into creating it and try to pay according to the artist's time. It's far from an exact science. Really good questions. I don't know if I'll make a video because as you can see there are no solid answers available. What I was thinking of doing is documenting getting a card altered from start to finish with a new artist. That could be interesting.
I can see the difficulty on the matter. Anyway you take this subjecto I'm sure it's gonna be a great video, since this is a very unexplored subject on the Magic content creators community (as far as I've seen).
A video about Proxys in commander would also be interesting, as I've seen you comment here. My group for instance use proxys to test out new cards we want to make sure work in the deck, and for expensive cards like Doubling Season, that go in many decks but that I have a single copy of.
Loved the video!!!
Your acidic slime was really awesome!
That force of Will is beautiful
That birthing pod art is dope
This is inspiring me to try this with some of my cards. If anything it'll be good practice, something I should be doing more as a learning Illustrator. It'll probably be a lot of fun too with a result I can continuously enjoy. If I get good at it, maybe I can take commissions from my friends and earn some money ;)
Love looking into your collection
I'm glad you like it. Any other videos you would like?
Jumbo Commander a competitive deck! Also 1v1 commander would be cool. I know most people don't like decks that are uber budgetless though haha
I would love to find some overlays for my cards, like stickering them, but here in the netherlands I have no idea where to look for it unfortunately. Loved the vid and the alters!
There are some people that draft up cool proxies just for fun (many can be made into stickers). Just on google, I can see thousands but there is a big difference between what you see on a computer and getting that into your paper deck. I think the printing process may be a little more tricky if you don't have all the proper equipment.
I've dabbled into doing a little bit of my own, but nothing amazing. One of the things I've loved doing is taking the art on a card and altering it match the theme of a deck, usually by borrowing the art from another magic card. I did a lot of this when Edgar Markov came out as a commander, and I wanted to use art that matched the theme of vampires more generally for the art for cards for his deck. For example, I took the art from Righteous Blow and used that on my Path to Exile, I took Defang and placed that art onto Swords to Plowshares, I have the promo art from Call the Bloodline on my Anointed Procession, and I have heart from Blood Mist on my Shared animosity. I don't do anything special here, just splice the art from both cards together in photoshop, print it out, then use double-stick tape to place that art onto a bulk common while leaving the real card separate in a binder in case someone complains about my alters.
But that to me has been one of the biggest reasons to make these alters. I really love the immersive feel of looking at my hand, especially when playing a tribal deck, and feeling like every card belongs in that tribe as opposed to seeing things like zombies or elementals in the art for cards to support my vampires.
I love everything about this idea.
I really want to make a doge "so, such, wow" reference here, but I know I'd screw it up, so I'll just say, "I love the flavor."
That Treasue Cruise is to die for!!
I'm a big fan of art alters. I want two of my commanders either fully altered like Tana the bloodsower of Saskia the unyielding.
You have a beautiful collection!
I have always loved collecting things and magic cards are gorgeous, nostalgic, and fun to play. Sure beats the hell out of my old stamp collection.
I love the cratehoof
I've had digital alters made of duplicate expensive cards for my EDH decks to save time on resleeving, cards like Demonic tutor and Yawgmoths will. I also get digital alters made of each commander for my different EDH decks, but I usually try and leave the cards in the deck as they are.
That's a similar idea of my Gaea's Cradle alter. That's a good idea especially if your digital alters have style. Personally, I like to make the hard decisions about where my cool/expensive cards end up. But I'm spoiled and have multiple copies of many cards from playing for so long.
Jumbo Commander I'm lucky that my playgroup is lieniet about this, otherwise every game would be punctuated by me re and desleeving my tutors and sometimes Yawgs will. At least this way the NM copies I bought stay NM because they aren't being desleeved every hour.
Also good for keeping track of slots in a deck. I tell myself "I'll just 'BORROW' this card for another deck and I'll put it right back." ...... nope, now I have a 99 card commander deck and I can't figure out what's missing.
@@JumboCommander On this same topic of not knowing which card is missing, I assume you have lists of what's in all of your decks? I've come across this problem with just 3-4 decks. Out of nowhere I'll decide to change a land around or an artifact and forget to mark it down somewhere that I changed it, then I need to check through the whole deck/list again.
I like altering cards too! Most of the time it’s just border extension, and about one third of the time it’s basic lands. I don’t really sell them for much, since they make awesome gifts. My goal is to extend every card in my EDH deck.
That's such a cool goal. Once you are done you'll have an EDH deck that is so special it will outshine everyone else's.
Where do you get stickers that you can put over cards? Like the birthing pod in the video I think? Seems like a cool way to alter.
I'm curious if it's actually a sticker that you can put on your own card, or if it's a special process that the artist does themselves.
Woah how did they get it to print over the text box like that on birthing pod I'm confused as to how it's so well combined.
The text is part of the print. I don't think these type of digital alters are ever going to be sanctioned play legal, though (since people can change the wording on the card and pass it off as legit - or even just mistakes in retyping the text can make people misplay).
I only have no-border cards, and very few, since a lot of my cards will eventually be exchanged and traded among my playgroup :)
That sounds like an awesome playgroup.
You should really do textless cards if it’s an iconic card like lightning bolt or negate
I use a matte craft clear coat. It protects and that hides the matte of craft paints.
That birthing pod was nice
I've got a MartaM; it's a Cream of the Crop w/ Macho Man Randy Savage from his "cream of the crop" promo video w/ Mean Gene. It's pretty sick.
just watched the video for reference ...speechless
thanks for the vid
Awesome video! I'm an alter artist myself, but I'm still getting started, what advice would you have for reaching out to more potential commissioners? Attending GPs or other events maybe?
Facebook and Reddit. Actually, I find it quite difficult to interact with the community. Hopefully, videos like this will spread awareness.
3 years later, I'm now in your shoes. I've only done one card that I felt is worthy of selling (and it was a Pokemon card, so it was much easier), and now someone has commissioned me to do a Magic card! I'm super excited, but also nervous about messing up. This is my first alteration commission. Do you have any advice for a baby commissioner?
I saw that the canonist you had was foil, so it is possible to alter foils? I was curious if that affected the paint or other material somehow.
The foiling does mess with the paint. Even unfoiled cards are already really difficult to paint on. The key is light layers and drying in between painting sessions. If you layer too heavily not only will you have buildup but the paint will crack off the surface of the card because the card isn't very grippy. Some alterists actually sand down magic cards and then paint on the unsealed paper. Some alterists use paint pens on foils which work really well but you sacrifice detail.
I love the idea of altered art. I plan on making a Neheb deck with spells like comet storm as the win condition, except Super Saiyan Goku (altered art Neheb) will Kamehameha (altered art Comet Storm) my opponents away! Do you know of anyone you recommend that I could reach out to to make this happen?
Anime and cartoon styles can be very easy for alterists. Make sure you have reference pictures for them to use. Maybe someone will advertise in this comment section and hook you up.
Anyone know who did the treasure cruise?
What kind of paint did you use? Looks like you did a fantastic job at matching the colors on the ones you did yourself.
Acrylics. They seem to be the standard for most alterists. I just used what was most popular.
Jumbo Commander ah, cool, thanks! Great video.
You are too hard on your Altered cards, @JumboCommander!
They look really good!
Loved all the black Altered cards you showed, are they from the same artist?
Thank you for the kind words. Even though I'm still critical of my strip mine I still really like it because it's mine.
I don't know every artist of the cards I showed but the ones I do know are in the description usually with links to all their cool stuff.
I love seeing altered cards but I've never made it to a gp is there an a website or artist you recommend I could commission or purchase from?
I have links to a bunch in the description. eBay is still the place to find alters just be careful cause many are just meh quality.
Where did you get that patron wizard??
I found out a friend of me does alters. He is really good and I wanted him to alter "some" of my cards. We ended up agreeing on a fairly low rate (almost as low as cost, very thankfull for that ^^) and he is now busy altering an ENTIRE edh deck.
I'm very anxiuosly waiting until he's done with it.
WARNING if you never had an alter done, they are very time intensive if you want them done good. If you're crazy like me, be prepared to loose your deck for some time XD.
That's some good advice. There is often long turn around times on altering cards. A whole deck alter sounds like an epic job. I think you're deck is going to be really special when it is done, especially because it involved a friend.
Yeah, i'm really hype, and the long wait time doesnt help my patience at all XD
So, 10 months later...is it done yet? lol
magic should do some of these
the beast within type would be great
I want to do doodle on my cards now
I've messed around with lands and tokens and random commons in the past but it has to catch my eye otherwise I lose interest and throw it away before it's done
Do better ;)
@@andrewlaverghetta715 there are plenty I finish, but the end result has to be something I like otherwise it wasn't worth the effort. Now that I'm not playing magic, the whole thing seems moot
My wife is looking to get Reaper (Overwatch) onto Shauku, Endbringer. We just gotta make it to a GP
So you can check and see if Pete Venters is attending a GP near you. He does have a lot of cards to his name (281). You can also check and see if he's open to altering by mail or if he even does basic alters. He might not be confident that he can do a good Reaper on a card so he might gracefully pass. In that case look around at someone that does really good anime/marvel/DC stuff and reach out to them. Good luck!
Believe it or not, I actually already contacted him about it as his website says he doesn’t do alters cause his eyes are too old. He said he’s cool with the card being altered by someone else as long as they leave the original artist credit on the card somewhere. Thanks for the advice on finding the right artist!
I don't know how to feel about that "Birthing Pod" card though. It's one thing to use your own digital work but another to use someone else's. That particular card's art was Da Vinci's study of a baby in the womb.
You have some nice ones. I personally would go as far to say I am against altered art. But. Everyone has the right to do what they want with their cards.
I'm not sure if I would ever put individual cards into a deck that had been altered unless the whole deck was altered. I even feel a little strange with some foiled and not all, but I feel the commander card itself is one that would deserve better treatment, if anything.
As he was going through his decks, I especially appreciated the commanders that were altered, and the Ezuri, Renegade Leader especially stood out as a card I recognized since I've played with it a bit. I think The Professor had somebody on recently who had an artist who made a metal commander "card."
can i buy that etherswon canonist please?
Everything has its price said the sketchy guy on the internet.
This is a little funny I just got my Krenko and blood moon alters being made for my goblin commander deck
What are you getting them altered to look like?
Jumbo Commander Krenko is just going to be textless and blood moon is getting it's border removed and adding goblins on the bottom. I'll be sure to show you how they turn out! :)
Do you have any artist recommendations for card alters?
Check out the description of the video for some links. I know the Revelen's Light is currently working. I see their stuff on twitter a lot.
Jumbo Commander Thanks!
Jumbo, you're way too hard on yourself! Your cards look great!
I can never decidee! On the one hand, I want to have all of my generals for my
Commander decks to be alter arts, but on the other hand I don't want to not like it and then not like the general. However I'm too indecisive/not very good at being this type of creative so I'd struggle to advise the artist...:/
Some can copy an image from the internet REALLY well. Try to find that type of artist and they should be honest and tell you if they can reproduce that image on your card. That way you know exactly what you are getting.
Your Entomb alter is insane. Who did you send it to?
I still have the entomb; it lives in my cube. I gave away six different alters that I did not feature.
Who altered it if you don't mind telling
if i sent an artist some money and a card would they do it? a magic artist that is?
Please, Manual Focus......
At the end of the day all I really want is an Elvish Mystic holding a basketball
No foil peels huh?
No, I don't see those around as often but I probably need to look a little harder. The ones I like the most are the commander foil peels where they take the big art from the promo card and fit it into a normal sized magic card. So cool.
I make the oversized alters. Usually look to make a slight border pop on the front, depending on the picture, with the ability and flavor text transplanted to the backside of the card for those who still need to show opponents an ability from time to time. The uniform reproduction is what I like about peels, given my compulsiveness for presentation. My Galina control/paste deck runs identical custom full art peel lands for thematic purposes, which is something mass painting alters could not provide for me.
That Mana Crypt alter makes me cry, honestly.
alter market is very small in finland so I started doing that stuff a few months ago. Already got commissions. check out "jv alters mtg" on facebook
while some of them look great, I would never alter my cards. maybe some lands, but not main card of my decks, I think there's something about the original thing that makes it special
That's a popular opinion. What do you think about signed cards or little alters done by the artists themselves?
For my commander i have an altered version and the original on the back in a clear case so i can showcase both
Oh God, that Wurmcoil..."we've got wurm-sign the likes of which even God has never seen."
muad'dib
Who doesn't want a Gandalf on their card? Like come on

Appropriate use of Rebecca Guay's "Persecute Artist" at the end of the video.
If anyone is interested, check out fez alters on facebook. Sorry for the shameless self promotion :p
Not shameless! The perfect place to get your name out there. Here's the link: facebook.com/fezalters/
I feel Wizards should get some of the best altered art artists and commission them to be the new artist. The art direction for the last few sets has been really terrible. It's to digitalized and over focused on story not on the card itself.
I still really enjoy the art on new magic cards. I have read that WotC is striving for more consistency so that sets feel like they belong together. I know I would be really happy if they broke that trend and got some really diverse art for some other sets like in Conspiracy or on a Masterpiece.
How does it feel now that the masterpieces are more or less borderless? For example, the box-toppers and GRN Mythic Edition? @@JumboCommander
the line at 6:24 sounds... very rude to be honest, it's like you're saying digital artists aren't real artists. obviously a card with a print is going to be worth less than one that was hand done and is therefore at least somewhat unique, but the artist still did a lot of work to make the art, and they're still a "professional artist." do you think that picture was easy?
Alters, enable your deck to feel like it has a identity created by you. This is something that magic had lost, due to the overwhelming lack of dedicated players that have the intelligence and combination of paitence, statistical analization skills, along with strategic understanding, to be able to build a deck that's original and competitive without Getting on the internet and getting a decklist.
Something us original Plainswalkers can do moderately easy. Magic had a totally different feel B4 the internet alterd it's definition of fun.
(Homebrew, B/U/R, 3rd turn win, with average 74% win ratio, over last 8 years)... And not a single deck listed with it's 3 combos.
Mr. Wedge, I take issue with something you mentioned at 6:40 about mass production via digital methods. Those hours taken spent actually painting are generally the same hours spend using a digital tablet, it's just that the artist can then print out multiples of the same artwork. In my mind that's a more intelligent approach because it maximizes the artists time and talent.
AVOID MTG Altered Cards and Artwork Community. the mods on that facebook page are corrupt as fuck and will ban you for asking for commissions
I do not know much about this community but one thing I can speak to is that you should be able to trust the artist you are working with. Make sure you both have open lines of communication. Be good to each other.
The recommendation with the altered art from digital is a poor recommendation. The author of this video has made the erroneous assumption that digital art will be mass produced and therefore requires cheap prices. The hours required to create one of these cards can be quite high. There is no reason to charge traditional vs. digital a different cost per hour. Both professions use tools that cost them and both appear as expenses in their taxes from software subscriptions for the digital artist to supplies for the traditional artist.
If you as a reader purchase a card from a digital artist and they charge similar prices to traditional, it's because they also have to work with you just like a traditional artist to generate the content you're looking for and to revise changes that you ask for.
Asking for a card to be altered to a design is a service and it costs money to receive that service for the hours the artist has put into it regardless of the methodology. It is harmful to dictate that the service cost should be different because the methodology didn't require the same supplies and tools or because it _could_ be mass produced.
With digital artists, you will often accept a Terms of Service that states you will own the design. That's why an artist will come to you after the finished product to ask _you_ if they may post it on their social media and whatnot. They will also link that it was art for you - because they're linking the owner of the design; the one who paid for it and owns it.
As a professional digital artist I wholeheartedly agree with this
I feel like you're misinterpreting his words.
You seem to be assuming that a person asks for an alter and the artist proceeds to make 10-100 "copies" of the commissioned work.
In actuality, I believe he is suggesting the artist, independent of outside requests, sat down to make an alter with the intent to sell at an event or online. The artist might think, "I really like this idea and I bet that a lot of other people would like it as well. I'm going to make 10 of them to sell."
Something that's produced once and then printed onto multiple cards definitely won't have the same value as one that's only produced once for a specific client.
How to ruin your cards
Oh I don't know. Have you ever personalized anything? If you've done a good job adding some personal flare, how did you feel about it? As an EDH player, it's not like he's too worried about rules and legality during tournaments. It sounds like it's not his only copy of the card anyways.
I makes me think about people who alter their automobiles. You can make a car better, and you can make a car worse. In the looks department, it's up to the individual.
As he did mention though, some people he plays with don't appreciate the full art, text-less cards like Mana Tithe. Heck, as a new player, I can't exactly say off the top of my head what the card does, but I won't be playing with him any time soon, haha!
"You need to tip them" A Word Combination only a American can do..... since american law didnt know what a Tip means(Money for Great Service not Money because someone needs it) most Americans also didnt understand what a Tip is and Think its their Job to make other Ppl´s Living xD
If the Artist isnt great, and some of these Cards you showed which are "Altered" in a short period of time just look awfull, i dont care if he dies next Day because he didnt got anything to eat.... He made shit with my Card xD If he did great and made something really good, sure he can get something. But no one on the World has a "Birthright"-Like Right on a Tip xd
Illegal cards... why bother decorating the card to the point where you can get DQ'd?
Username Unidentified kitchen table my friend. Not everything is a tournament.

You can still have fun, play magic cards and be a wizard while playing by the rules.
