Sometimes I wonder if these guys are actually machines or so conected to source that music just flows. I think is amazing what they do. Every performance, every song, such stamina. I love them all!
For anyone who didn't see the press release Iron Maiden put out earlier this year. Nicko suffered a stroke around 11 weeks before this tour was due to start. He is still in recovery and that's why you're noticing the simplified drumming on their live performances. I hope he gets back to somewhere near where he was 12 months ago but stroke recovery is a long and hard road.
The owner of the channel took the trouble to record the show and post it so that those who weren't there could watch it, and some assholes appear complaining that he didn't film Adrian/Dave during the solo.
I kinda wish everyone would just put the phones away and enjoy the multi-million dollar show like the old days. It drives the guys crazy how people are so busy filming that people are lost on how amazing the experience actually is in front of them. We have all been guilty of it, but damn.. sometimes the entire first 4 rows seem to have their damned cameras out these days.
Nicko is sounding very weird, he has removed the sound roll during the intro and the whole song is flat compared to some months ago. I don't know what happened. He's obviously old, we must understand that, and still nails it for a 71yo dude.
It's true that he is getting older, but tbh from the footage I've seen of these latest two shows he seems to play most of the songs spot-on, so if I had to guess I'd say he's simplifying the drumbeat on this song so he can keep the pace easier at his age. It is a shame that he isn't playing it the same way we're all used to, but better than having to slow it down I guess, if anything I'm more concerned about the lack of flag waving from Bruce, wtf man?
He's simplifying the songs a lot and he's removed most of the bass-drum-triplets so it's super noticeable on songs like Trooper and Caught Somewhere in Time.
I think Nicko has been told to strip his drumming right back, just so he can make it through the tour. I think there will be a couple of shows that will be filmed for dvd release, he will probably step it up for that. Unfortunately age is really starting to catch up with him.
