- Catching up with the awesome Joey & Dave Landreth to talk tones and music in 2022
Welcome to the show. Our great chums The Brothers Landreth visited the TPS studio during their 2022 European tour. In this video we take a deep dive into Joey’s current rig - including his utterly bonkers pedalboard - and also get some bass playing and tone insight from Dave. This is the full-length version of the short video that we put out a few weeks back… just in case you feel like you've seen some of it before!
There are three live session tracks referenced in this video, which we’ve cut out and put in a separate video… plus a bonus track too!
SEPARATE BAND SESSION VIDEO IS HERE • The Brothers Landreth ...
Needless to say, MASSIVE thanks to Joey, Dave, Roman and also manager Stu and sound tech Ian for making this such a fantastic couple of days. We are honoured to have such incredible humans here at TPS.

SCAM ALERT! Hello to everyone watching this. Please note we will NEVER promote competitions or prizes in CZcams comments sections. There are parties pretending to be us. So if ANYONE asks you to contact them saying you’ve won a prize and asks for details, please ignore them. Better still, please help us report them to CZcams. You have not won a prize, and it is not us. It’s happening right across CZcams, with collective apologies! Mick & Dan
So serendipitous that after oof a month of waiting for the rest of this film, that the episode of these Canadian bois is uploaded on Canadian Thanksgiving. And aren't we all thankful for the Brothers Landreth?!
We are, eh! Hoorah!
@@ThatPedalShow it’s aboot time
"I just love this shit." --I think we can all relate, Joey. 😁 Mega-cheers from the Big Apple.
Another Paycheck's worth of jumper cables and I should have a fully operational Brotary. I doubt that it will work as well as a pair of Harmonious Monks, but it is a free country and I have to give it a try.
Yeaaah! Legend. You are a legend, mate. Now I feel ok about two choruses, a Flanger, Univibe, phaser, Tremolo, and.. yeah.
"Another Paycheck's Worth" shall be our battle-cry.
This is extraordinary. Not since The Edge teamed up with Eno & Daniel Lanois have I heard a guitarist approach effects in a live show with such creative genius.
I can't recall the last time I called a musician a "genius" - Joey is a very, very bright chap. Outstanding. Thank you, TPS.
Ahahahahaha! Awesome!
HOW I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS. Joey Landreth At TPS Lawrence of Arabia Edition ❤
Hands down my favourite person on the planet . He remains humble even with a pedal board that looks like the deposit for a mortgage! Love to Joey and the best of luck with the tour. B
I think I have watched this 4 times now and just can't get enough of the geekery, musicianship and love that you guys all have for each other! Its a joy to watch, and highly educational!
Finally got to see The Bros Landreth in concert last night. It was amazing.
What I will always love about these videos is the variety in which we all chase an end goal. Be it simple setups or complex setups, it’s all about how best to serve the songs and translate them live ❤ Awesome video, guys!
Yeah man. Mick here. So much of what we do is obsessing about tone in isolation. And here’s this madman doing it in love songs, basically. Hahahah! AWESOME!
Joey's the guy who beat the final tone boss at the end of the game. Luckily he's nice enough to tell us how he did it!
Best best best best episode!
The trem/reverb section around 32 min. in is just TO DIE FOR in the cans. Absolutely spectacular. What a special release this is, guys.
When genius level playing meets golden ears. Thank you for this wonderful show, this will be watched forever.
Clicking "Like" once doesn't feel enough for this video. Super cool. Thanks for giving Dave a bit of air-time too!
Joeys humour meshes so well with you two
I love The Brothers Landreth and I learned about them on TPS!!! Thank you so much Dan and Mick for sharing your love for The Brothers and their beautiful music ❤
Hello Sunday afternoon. So ready for this!
I didn't get to see the Bros in Bristol this tour and was gutted to miss them after spending basically the entire pandemic listening to them (I was on holiday for basically the duration of the British leg, it's not all bad!), but just wanted to say thanks to Mick and Dan and indeed Joey and Dave for the appearance, performance and usual brilliant chat! What a fantastic bunch of humans.
Thank you Tristan, we appreciate that greatly!
Adressing Joey as guitarist I think is to come short of, he's a "holistic" musician... Although a nerdy one 😅. And Dave, the humble aproach to his role in the band makes him so relevant!!! Thanks to TPS I was able to know of this wonderful "band of brothers" years ago.
I so love this full-length episode. I listen to the Brothers L at dinner most evenings via a playlist of every song they've ever recorded - and it makes me re-evaluate constantly my approach to playing. I think I've cut out about 60% of the notes from my solos. Not bad, as I've only been playing for 51 years so I'm still learning. TPS is the source of my ongoing education - and depleting bank balance. Thanks guys!
Oh, and, always a pleasure to see Joey on the show. Lovely bloke; amazing guitarist, armed with a frankly terrifying board.
I’ve watched that original TPS video with Joey probably a dozen times! His playing and discovering the Let it Lie album changed how I felt about the guitar. His playing is so unique.
Well…. Fantastic work Mick and Dan for putting this all together for our delectation and delight. What we’ve got here from the Bros L, is not guitar and bass playing, not clever sounds or electro trickery. It’s art, pure art! Wonderful
Thanks so much Bill!
The dude has got a freaking big pedalboard but shows everyone that he can have 4 sounds just using the knobs on his guitar ! Man that's cooooold !
Yeah baby!
Goodness I’ve been waiting for this one, so excited to watch it. Thanks y’all!
Every episode with Joey is pure gold! ❤
Just awesome, thank you all.
I've been waiting for this! Finally here!
One of the best parts of TPS is seeing Dan & Mick being truly moved by music. Just beautiful guys. X
That expression pedal that Joey has built is ABSOLUTELY KILLER! Also shows so much restraint as a guitarist - of course your temptation is to have it super wet all the time, but he doesn't, he blends and tweaks - that's something that only someone who 'loves this shit' - will do! Great episode and man - this is one to come back to often and measure yourself in terms of enjoyment and how connected you are to your current rig.
I absolutely know what I'm doing after taekwondo and Sunday dinner tonight then cheers mick
So thrilled this is finally out! Far and away my favorite recurring guest!
Joey is fryggingmazing and Dave is bassistastic. I really really love his bass playing. Really….
Finally made it through my 1st pass on this vid. This is a TPS Extraordinary FEET (see what I did there!) among legendary episodes. Just WOW!!!! If they were not as good, the fact that they are so genuinely themselves and so very thoughtful would be enough. Thank you for the hard work. This was amazing.
Spent the morning listening to the new album. What a fantastic array of musical sounds! Loved it!
Joey is one of my favorite songwriters and of course guitar players and Dave is one of my main heros as a bass player. This was a perfect episode and well worth the wait! Well done, gentlemen.
I saw Bros Landreth at Oxford the other week because of the plug here on TPS, I've been waiting for this extended version. Wonderful stuff!
Equal parts inspiration and intimidation … so much passion and creativity in Joey’s craft … an artist at the top of his game … thank you Dan and Mick for such amazing content
The deep dive we’ve all been hoping for!!!
Excellent. Thank you sharing this deep dive. I had two fuzz pedals on my board. Now I have three! Beautiful songs, playing, tones and people. Joey has worked out how to get a full on Daniel Lanois production out of one guitar, a pedalboard....and three amps. Glorious.
I love these videos so much. I was lucky enough to have a private lesson with Joey over zoom - and what I can say is - he is on such a higher level of thinking/feeling music that it makes sense he has this complicated stage pedal setup to keep things fresh for him! If he were just playing the song he would get board (misspelling intentional..lol). When he talks about it being "fun" to manage all that chaos on stage - I get that - I can't do it - I like everything to be dialed and consistent so I don't have to think about my board and tones - and can focus on the playing - but Joey is so beyond ANYTHING in the music world that his playing/singing is always so consistent and dialed, that his focus can be the tone and pedals. Makes total sense! Love from Salt Lake TBL and TPS!! Cheers,
Thanks Tyler! Totally with you on Joey’s apparent otherworldliness. We love these guys so much. Cheers!
So awesome. Thank you for sharing the longer edit!
Had the pleasure of meeting the Bros after their Glasgow gig - absolute gents and super humble but we all know they're remarkable musicians!
Yes! This is going to be great, been waiting for this! 😁
I love the new record - and the previous ones as well. Also loved the live show in Copenhagen. And love TPS, too.
More Pedal sessions “ please! You showcase some wonderful talent as well as their gear. I love that we get both!
Excellent episode. Some very helpful insights from Dave Landreth on the role and influence of bass. His point about having an overview of arrangement is spot on.
Fellas this was a treat. WOW
Joey and the two of you are so good together. Fascinating episode and as usual Joey’s rig is really interesting and he sounds ace. Great to see Dave too
Great video as always gents. Some of the tones Joey gets are absolutely mind blowing! Missed them on tour unfortunately...next time!
that is spectacular!! especially being able to blend with that switch Joey set up. Amazing!
That intro... yowsa! I just realized that TPS has introduced me to some of my new heroes: Greg Koch, Mark Letteiri, Shawn Tubbs, etc. And now this cat... This channel really is a gem (and, on rare occasion, a Jem).
This will be worth the wait!
Literally. First stroke to the strings at 0:05 and I burst into laugh of joy. What a sound and player!
Playing this on my best audio system. Only Airplay but the stereo mix is bloody amazing. Mick!
Thank you Ron! I really appreciate that!
Indeed. Of ALL the electric guitar content creators online, I have to proclaim TPS getting us the closest to sitting in the room. Oh the tone is EPIC!!
That lad is otherworldly in his playing and tone - was it Paul Gilbert or John Mayer who said playing blues was basically playing almost everything going out of or coming into tune! Boy does Joey exemplify that - and it sounds SO cool!
It would have been amazing to see this before seeing their show, to appreciate and understand how these sometimes complex yet so natural sounds are being created.
Epic, absolutely epic!
I’ve been patiently waiting for this gem. 🙌
Alex! Thank you is all we have to say. Helping giving this man voice is public service! Thank you!
You guys are the best. I can’t thank you enough for the first class exposure; the way you guys capture the performances and discussion’s, both sonically and visually is first class.
And I couldn’t agree more; getting to be part of his tonal team is an absolute privilege and joy; truly humbling to be mentioned in the same breath as all of you other cats.
what a ruddy lovely video. thanks chaps
I love this show so much, Thank you guys for everything, so informative and just flat out cool pedals and playing. Please sir, may we have some more ?
Thank you Mick and Dan for introducing me to Bros Landreth. Was lucky enough to see them perform just last night here in Calgary and the experience was fantastic. Joey gets most of the attention and he rightly deserves it, but the real magic is how the band play together. Somehow I ended buying a signature Joey Landreth Fuzz by Mythos Effects from the merch booth last night-that is a first. I was proudly wearing my All You Need is Fuzz shirt and that must have set in motion the events that lead to the pedal purchase...ha ha ha.
That was just great! Watched each part multiple times. I've never liked slide until I heard Joey play it and someone please create a ring mid/filter/volume/expression pedal in one unit and put me on the waiting list!
SOOOO good to hear Joey talk about EQ in a band setting. So many online guitar demo players have deep, rich, fat tones, and have everyone striving for those, and that works great at home or when recording, but it does not work in live band.......my general tone is bass light and treble high......sounds surprisingly bright when played in isolation; but works perfectly when set against our drummer, bass player, keys player, and tenor sax........... I mostly have those upper mids / highs all to myself, along with the singer.
What a privilege to sit in on this conversation. Thanks, lads.
been waiting for this!!!!
Aw yes! LET'S GO!
Been waiting for this,,, 👍
Truly inspiring ❤
It's all about the bongoes!!!!!!!!
The best thing about his pedal board for me is the photo of his wife and child - that is priceless - the loneliness of the touring muso with a family at home - heartache everyday
What a player Joey is and brother Dave is no slouch as a bass player either, fantastic and fascinating look through Joey's pedal board, he sure loves his fuzzes !! 😄
OMG....Tone is everything
“Muah!” Love this guy so much
Our band used to play the Bros' version of Jesus on the Mainline in every show. I just love love love everything Dave does on the bass and tried to emulate him. A joy to play even if I never quite figured it out!!
LOVE their version! It's my soundcheck song😆
@@McPhan86 I mean the original is legendary and the Ry Cooder version is an amazing classic, but how crazy good are Joey Dave and Ariel doing it ??
Great chat! Very inspiring. Bummed that the habit got overlooked. Was really interested in hearing how he might be working it in to songs. Maybe next time 😊
I hate that I love it so much. That’s was funny. My purchase of a Stomp made so a huge difference to being able to continue to make albums at home. And it has turned out to be a fantastic creative tool. It’s not on my board currently. But that’s because I am not recording album three yet.
Great time for creative expression and music production. What a time be a guitarist and instrumentalists
Happy thanksgiving, Bros. (and Canadians everywhere)!
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“Is it worth it, NO!?!! No, but it’s SO FUN!”
Yet another reason for me to want a Gold Top😬🎸😬🎸
MIND BLOWN AGAIN !! such an inspiring fella every time ye have him on. Great band, great sounds and great people its just great. My own EP will hopefully be out before Christmas and a lot of inspiration has come from this show. I started watching the old gig rig channels and fell back in love with guitar and tone and over the years all of this kind of thing has helped me immeasurably. So thanks chaps! Keep her lit!!!!!
Gonna have to save this.
01:13:04 Wow that whole explanation of the instrument was really profound. I don't play a lot of bass but I'm going to now.
Wow, Joey's board is like an analogue Helix. There is every flavour of tone necessary there.
I felt things at 1hr15 - beautiful duet.
This must be some kind of record of mind blows per minute...
Joey IS the best slide player out there. Wow!!!!
Bongos maketh the man!
The greatest of the great
Please come to Brazil, Joey and Dave!!
Landreth Bros rule!
Joey mentioning his daughter liking Scott’s album brings back memories of my little boy and the Bros album ‘87. If he was crying I’d put that on and he’d instantly stop and settle.
Why are we not talking more about the picture above his expression pedal? Ultimate tone chaser and all around great guy. TPS: you guys aren't too shabby either.
It doesn’t hurt that this stuff sounds awesome. Lol.
Joey, have you styled yourself after Paul Davids, or has he styled himself after you? Or are you brothers from another mother? Either way, it would warm the cockles of MY heart to see you guys do a duet together on CZcams, both with your full pedalboards on display in all their glory along with your facial hair beautifully groomed and shiny. Viewers can vote: whose pedalboard is bigger? Whose beard is sexier? :-) All this is with full respect for both you and David's tasteful playing and contributions to making our world just a little bit better for it.
BONGOS MAKETH THE MAN! 😂
Bongos make me think of the intro to Everyday is a Winding Road by Sheryl Crow. The guitar in that track was awesome.
Come Morning: When you have a wet dream then wake up like "aww now I have to clean this up!"
Joey is quite simply the best player out there right now. Idk how the hell this guy comes up with all these sounds, tones, riffs and licks and puts them into a singer songwriter context. I could do a quarter of what Joey does I’d just shred all over everything all the time lol. Thanks for sharing the directors cut.
"Joey is quite simply the best player out there right now."
Nope. There is no such thing as "the best player out there right now".
What's wrong with simply declaring that you like a musician and their work and leaving it at that? Why do so many people insist on indulging in hyperbole when it only serves to make them look like idolaters or ignoramuses?
@@jankafka7330 oh dear lord… say hello to the dictionary everyone
