    And even if a defender cut back he would simply continue to run forward in an arrow line and go for an assist instead

      Yeah as the defender would create space to exploit. Crazy how effective such a simple skill is (simple on paper)

    It wasn't his simple lateral cut that beat defenders, it was the close-range whip he could put on his curling shots that could curl past a marker even if they were only a yard away and perfectly goal-side.
    So long as Robben had a bit of space directly to the inside, he could always get that signature shot off. There wasn't much a single defender goal-side could do to stop it, because Robben wasn't using the inside cut to get past him. The only way to keep him from taking that shot is if he had TWO defenders on him, one flanking and one goal-side. Obviously, it's hard for defenses to double-team one guy without leaving someone else open.
    Very few other players could get that degree of whip on their curling shots. Such was Robben's whippage that he could curl it past a close-range marker, with velocity, and still keep it on frame. That's the simple reason the move was so deadly -- he didn't actually have to beat his marker to score!

    • @chasingmypotential
      @chasingmypotential  Před 5 měsíci +5

      What you said at the end “he didn’t actually have to beat his marker to score” is what makes it so hard to stop. Also they cant double up because there are so many other good players on that team. This is why when a good player plays for a lower ranked team it can be hard, as the opposition will double up more as no body else is anywhere near as deadly

      @@chasingmypotential - imagine the terror of a defender who has Robben running straight to him, Lahm going along the line passing him on his left side and Müller doing what Müller does to the right of him. While Lewandowski is nowhere to be seen until he scores.

    Great explanation!
    I'd just like to add a little trick that enables him to succeed in his feints, namely the fact that the ball is glued to his foot, which is the hallmark of great dribblers like R9 and Messi.

    I cringe everytime someone mentions that bruce lee quote in the comments. Arguably his worst saying (not Lee's fault) since people take it wayyyyy too literally. Robben is an exception to the rule, no one should try to be a one trick pony (there are exceptions) or practise one move 10,000 bloody times IMO.
    more like practise 4 - 5 skills with 200 - 300 times each to get good at em
    this is all IMO again

      @mardini Před 5 měsíci +2

      theres a reason why a lot of left foot players can get away with only using left foot while right foot players can't. ie. lets say 10% of population is left footed but in the professional scene its closer to 30-50%. if you look at players like robben, messi, di maria, maradona, these legendary players are extremely left footed. while if you look at CR7, r9, zidane ....etc these legendary right footed players are not right foot heavy they score with both feet. however the new generation of left footed players nowadays may proof this wrong.

    • @chasingmypotential
      @chasingmypotential  Před 11 měsíci +4

      Practice, when running with the ball touch the ball with each stride. Start if slow and increase your speed as time goes on. This will help you get the weight of your touch more consistent. Robben wont even need to think about it anymore. He can move at lightning speed whilst touching the ball with each stride (like messi) and its such a great skill to improve. In the future when my health is better I will add some drills ect to help with dribbling 👍🏼

    It’s really not that difficult of a move. What makes it difficult is the shot at the end. Even top footballers struggle to be that accurate. The dribbling is actually easy. It’s similar to performing a fake shot, instead of actually chipping your toe into the ground you knock the ball ahead of you. Keeping your eyes on the goal is the other important aspect of the move because that’s where you can feint the threat of the shot
