- Tennis! D&D-style dice combat! It's Wimbledungeons! After our Mario Tennis Aces inspired tabletop game in Show of the Weekend, we asked if you could come up with your own versions for us to play, and you did! Our DM Johnny Chiodini of Eurogamer picked out this one by Jonathon Astles!
Cheers to all who sent in their excellent games, and hope you enjoy this one as much as we did (rules can be found below!).

****Wimbledungeons****
***by Jonathon Astles***
Players select which type of shot they will play, with more difficult shots requiring a higher roll to succeed. When returning a shot, players must beat the difficulty threshold for their opponent's shot added to the shot they have selected.
Shots Difficulty threshold
Straight 3
Topspin 5
Slice 8
Dropshot 10
When serving, the server can decide how risky to play their serve (i.e. how fast/close to the net). As such they can determine any skill threshold between 5 and 10. Service alternates between games as for normal tennis or for a single game service alternates between shots. Unlike regular tennis, players are not given a second serve.
Standard Tennis scoring applies with 40-40 leading to Deuce, advantage etc.
Doubles can be played. Rules apply as for singles plus the player returning the shot chooses which opponent to aim for.
An example section of a game goes as follows:
Player 1 serves choosing a serve difficulty of 8. They roll a 16 and therefore succeed. Player 2 must now return and chooses to return it straight, they must now roll at least an 11 (serve=8 plus straight return=3). They roll a 15 and therefore succeed. Player 1 must now return and chooses to give it topspin. They must now roll 8 (Straight=3 plus topspin return=5). They roll a 7 and lose the point. Game is now 15-0 to player 2.
Player 2 serves at 5. Rolls a 4, losing the point. The game is now 15-15.
Player 1 serves again at 6. Succeeds by rolling 9. Player 2 returns with a dropshot so must roll at least 16 (serve=6 plus dropshot return=10). They roll an 18. Player 1 returns with a slice and must roll at least 18 (dropshot=10 plus slice return=8). They roll a 7 and lose the point. Game is now 30-15 to player 2.
Etc.
For more advanced rules:
Rackets have a point of damage added if a player rolls a 5 or less. If a critical failure is rolled (i.e. 1) then two points of damage are added. After three points of damage a racket breaks and that player loses the point. A new racket is then given to the player and the game continues.
Any roll above 15 gives the player a point of power. A critical success (i.e. 20) gives the player two points of power. Power can be spent to either reduce the threshold of your return by 5 (Calm in the Storm) or increase the threshold of opponents return by 5 (Press the Advantage). Reducing the threshold can be used even if the threshold has been raised by the use of power. Increasing the threshold is capped at 20. i.e. a natural 20 will still always return a shot. Power is gained even if the player doesn’t return the shot. I.e. rolls a 16 against an 18

When's the next D&D game though cause those are honestly some of my favorite CZcams videos😁
only gamers could find a way to play tennis indoors without exerting any energy whatsoever. I'm making notes as you play
Tommy LCM I think they said EGX was the next planned D&D
I actually cannot believe you guys played my game and seemed to enjoy it! This, plus all the comments being super nice, has more than made my day. More like made my month! I totally agree with the changes you guys made (stopping the power creep was a great move by Johnny) but Luke was right, with the way you guys played the game, the numbers were a little off. You've probably seen some of the comments saying you played it wrong but I actually think the way you guys played it is great! (with the numbers scaled so that rallies can last a little longer). I'd chalk it up to a combination of me explaining poorly and Johnny's subsoncious inspiration. I didn't have much time to playtest it before I sent it in or get anyone to check the explanation. Hence why the first of the advanced rules makes absolutely no sense. As such, having watched you guys and played it a little myself I've made some adjusted rules (both for my original idea and the escalation version). If anyone wants a copy, feel free to hit me up. Thank you all so much for being the awesome team (and community) that you are!
you should make the first serve a free shot if they miss there roll, as in tennis that's considered a fault but if they miss there roll again they loss the points and that's a double-fault in tennis.
just some helpful advice to try to make it more fun
Heres a suggestion for a stats/character creation system:
You have 3 stats: Dexterity, Strength, and Technique
You can take up to 2 from each and add it to another stat.
You can increase a stat to a maximum of +3
Dexterity decreases the threshold to return a shot
Strength gives an additional bonus to the return threshold
Technique increases the affect of a power point, e.g. a +3 to technique means that you can increase or decrease the threshold by 8
Any leftover points can be put into specialty shots. This decreases the threshold you have to return with when you use those shots. You cannot decrease the additional threshold to hit past 2. Cannot be applied to serves.
Basically proficiency.
Finally, an additional suggestion: Edge shots. You roll with disadvantage when you make the shot, but your opponent also rolls with disadvantage when returning.
Also, more of an adjustment to match tennis rules, you have two chances to make the serve. (Fault, double fault)
Have fun!
Great idea, mate!
I like the idea of this game, but it's not one that I imagine I'd play for very long. Mathematically (cumulative rules or otherwise), the base rules always favor using caution and lowering your number as much as possible. Even with the advanced rules, I can't think of a circumstance in which it is favorable in the long term to pick any move other than Straight. I have proposed another version of this game in another post, but it's a lot harder to keep track of, so I would be interested to see a fixed version of this game.
Kobo I really like these for a more advanced version of the game, great rules to make the game a little more technical and give it some good rpg elements. I like the balancing as well, would need playtesting obviously but seems nicely done. Definitely the kind of thing I'd put in as optional rules for more advanced players!
Johnny’s face from 16:10 to 16:30 gives me life - the steady shift from “where’s Luke going with this?” to “what is my life?”
Beth Bloomer I read this comment at 15:20 and wasn't sure what to anticipate, but that was beautiful
Canonically, Dob and Merilwen found a fun hobby while the rest of the party razed numerous taverns to the ground.
MinniMaster I fully support this
Um... by the look of it, Dob and Merilwen are IN a tavern playing this, so...
prudence taps at the window before eldritch blasting it to the ground
dob and merilwen playing tennis in the summer sun while prudence and corazon trick egbert into burning the local pub to the ground with his burps is not a mental image i thought i would enjoy on a saturday morning
Sam Dilks Well, it’s just another day in the life of the OX Party.
See I was figuring Johnny was in the high chair because he's still in character as babby Alfred Strangetide.
Kudos to Jonathan Astles, nice system!
Luke: I'm gonna return with a red hot...
Me: Chilli pepper.
Luke: ...slice
Me: Ah.
Liam Duke Give it away, give it away, give it away, give it away, now.
The idea of Johnny looming over us all like the sun from the Teletubbies, sounds like a start to a horror movie.
Is it weird that I want to hear him do the creepy baby laugh?
Caitlin RC or the start of a much needed Teletubbies reboot
or a perfect society
Caitlin RC Don't fear the looming sun-like Johnny. If the D&D videos have taught us anything, it is that he is a loving and benevolent god...
"Time for Dobby bye-bye"
Let's also take a minute to appreciate that the Loading Bar this tennis D&D video was filmed in was the very aptly named... Server. Bravo.
Johnny once again has to deal with oxtra
'...and there's Dob...'
I think you mean 'gets' to deal with Oxtra.
I love the idea that this is Canon to the actual oxbox d and d series. So, corazon, prudence and egbert are just sitting on the side watching dob and merilwen play tennis
With the game being "Wimbledungeons", I couldn't help but imagine them going full-on wizard battle after a few volleys.
A wild Mike appears at 33:30
Then a wild Jane appears at 33:33
I had no idea how much I needed this in my life until now.
Sweet Jesus they said it couldn't be done but they've bloody done it. They've made tennis interesting
Replace tennis phrases with sword/shield phrases and this can also be a great table top dueling game
Andy Mcp oh man I gotta try this now
Nice idea. I like the idea of a Longsword or Bastard Sword duel without the baggage of a full character sheet.
3 - Thrust
5 - Slash
8 - Cut
10 - END HIM RIGHTLY
This is fine for base rules, but unfortunately base rules lend themselves strongly to always taking the lowest option, because your decision in difficulty is *always* more likely to affect you (given you roll first) then your opponent. The rules need to add some kind of risk/reward mechanic if you want the players to do anything else. I propose a split between cumulative tallies and difficulty, such as:
Difficulty / Escalation Factor
2 / 1 - Thrust
4 / 2 - Slash
7 / 3 - Cut
9 / 4 - END HIM RIGHTLY
Each player has their own Escalation Tally. The initiator starts with a tally of 1, and their opponent starts with a tally of 0.
Initiator goes first.
On your turn, add your Escalation Tally to the Difficulty of the move your opponent last did. If you have not yet acted, this is 0. Then, add the Difficulty of the move you wish to do. Roll a d20. If you roll under, your blood is drawn and you lose the round. Otherwise, add the Escalation Factor of your chosen attack to your opponent's Escalation Tally.
Duels aren't typically a long number of rounds, so it'll make a much shorter, more compact game.
Fruitface Jennings I love this so much. A very serious duel two men slashing and thrusting with all their might, and in one desperate manuever, the knight backs off takes 30 seconds of value able time while his oponent charges sword in hand, to unscrew his pommel and flings it to END HIS OPPONENT RIGHTLY and he shall for the pommel is mightier than the sword
What about doubles against Oxbox?
Yes!
Hey Eurogamer? Can we have Johnny? Name your price.
Vader Minion Such a mood.
1:50 Luke I say this with all the love in my heart ... you remind me of a 5 year old when you try to count on your fingers 😂
1:90? what the fuck?
Zach Attack ... I’m genuinely concerned how long it took me to notice what was wrong even after you pointed it out. I blame it on the heatwave? 😅
He's adorable.
@33:35 is that a Jane Douglas in the background?.. What a rare sight to see in the wild..
mii6619 And just 5 seconds before you could clearly see Mike too.
Ayan Haider Well spotted!.. 2 oxbirds off my list.. Just leaves me with the rarest of all oxbirds, the elusive Andy Farrant..
Andy was stood in front of the table in stealth mode
So that’s where they go when they say “lunch” at the end of show of the week!
Oh yeah! I like how she looks over to this table like "Oh, they're doing that Tennis D&D thing?"
What the heck was Mike looking at, is there a balcony up there? Is that you, Andy?
I was going to suggest mixed-doubles with Eurogamer’s Aoifa and Ian, but this is a family-friendly show…
This is a really great game mechanic. Elegantly simple, with a nice layer of complexity underneath from the power points.
Pretty versatile. Swap out tennis terminology for swords/guns/punches and you get a nice little whatever you want it to be.
I want a weekly or atleast monthly board/table game from oxtra guys we have to make this happen please.. these are so fun and i love them all soo much.
Luke "Lucky Serve" Westaway (Also known as Luke "No Luck Return" Westaway) against Ellen "Good at Tennis" Rose.
Also Luke "Yellow Shorts" Westaway. It was a bad day for Luke.
A tennis match where Luke's height advantage is neutralized, the power of maths!
Jonathon Astles! Well done man! I hate tennis and this was fantastic. If real tennis was like this I'd never miss a match. I don't trust that "random" number generator Luke! Insist on a D20 next time. I'll be playing this with my kids on our upcoming vacation. Great game!
All the vids featuring Johnny have actually pushed me to give Eurogamer's channel a chance, and I absolutely love it.
Much thanks to all the channels involved for helping make my CZcams viewing plentiful and enjoyable for all these years (and many more to come).
And people ask why I'm not watching Wimbledon? Why would I need to when this exists?
This is brilliant!! Also, this sport is now officially in my D&D campaign.
18... That's a numberwa... I mean powerpoint!
Use prestidigitation to flavor your racquet and clean it
So ... is Cliff still unconscious? Should we be worried?
Beth Bloomer yes, he might recover
Johnny's facial expressions throughout the video are just pure gold especially around 15:50 to 16:30
Thankyou OX and Johnathan for making tennis actually fun to watch
I knew OX could do a lot of things, but making a version of tennis that's this AMAZING and fun... well, that's just a miracle.
PS- thanks to whoever sent the rules for this one in. You're a genius, man!
You misunderstood the rules guys, you have to beat the number comprised of the shot that the other player shot at you and the number that you wanna shoot back. if you succeed, the other player will have to beat only the shot number that you shot at them and the number they wanna shoot back, all the previous numbers go null. Otherwise its just impossible after a few turns like it happened in the video XD
But it doesn't mean that the video wasn't entertaining, love to see you guys play board-ish games with Johnny
So a curling tabletop RPG is next, I’m guessing.
Aidan Bonner Its name would obviously be... Bombspiel.
Luke making a strong case for the afterlife: "You've got a great view from heaven!"
It seems like Luke has reached that lovely moment there your character merges with your everyday life.
I love how you people are so committed to what could have been a one off gag.
To be fair to Luke, he did continue most of the matches with soiled pants. That's dedication right there.
Luke, the troubled bard: "The risk I took was calculated, but man am I bad at maths"
Even tho RNGs are technically more random than dice, I'm absolutely appalled that a D20 wasn't used here haha. Also, obligatory "Johnny come back! You can blame it allll on meeee."
This gave me inspiration on what to make the boss fight as the DM in the next D&D session that I'm doing, it's similar, but I spread this idea out to volleyball, with four player teams. The idea is four players are one side, while the dungeon master controls dour NPC players, and whenever the ball goes over the net everyone has to roll initiative to see who gets the ball. Next up is the return ball mechanic, it's the same as to how it is in the tennis game, but there is the pass mechanic, where whoever goes to hit the ball has the option to "pass" the ball to another player if they roll over a ten, if the pass is successful it negates the escalation, and allows the next player to make the shot as if they were serving the ball. Furthermore, this works a spike as well, since characters who are in the back are at a disadvantage to make a spike shot, and have to roll higher on difficulty, whereas players in front have an advantage to spike, and have a lower difficulty threshold to make the shot. Furthermore, I was considering about adding powers and buffs into this, for instance, a character who activates a barbarian rage in game will add 3 difficult threshold to ever returning shot and gain advantage, whereas a rogue/class with high dexterity (not sure of an actual ability to incorporate) but they act as a counter to barbarian can then reduce the difficulty of shots because they react, and return at a higher skill level for a short period of time. A bard is able to act as control on the field and activate select canthrips that'll affect the difficulty threshold of shots for either team. Lastly, a more harsh mechanic I thought off, is the nat 20. My idea here is that if the some rolls a 20, then there is a 50% chance that it would be overcast, and the ball will be hit out of bounds. Since players can't all be expert players these things are bound to happen, so the person who is hitting the ball has to make a saving throw greater than 10 in order to to keep from knocking the ball out of bounds. I just love thinking about this and I am turning my D&D group into an intense sports anime--
This was brilliant! Not only a classic Oxtra video where Luke gets overconfidant and frustrated, but the mechanics where spot on. Great work Jonathan! Definitely gonna make my D&D players do this ^^,
This is the first (and only) time I will ever be excited to watch a tennis match
Awesome job on the tennis rules, Jonathan. Also, have to say my inner min-maxer is screaming at Luke for using a powerpoint to reduce his roll by 5 then increasing it by 10. Just increase by 5 and use that power point to make life more difficult for Ellen!
Whoa, Ellen, I started singing at the same time as you did around 26:14. That felt magical.
im enthralled I started watching for the hell of it but ... i cant stop watching
Who knew Johnny did a great Alec Guinness Oib-Wan, and Luke's Obi-Wan sounded like Ewan McGregor's. 23:20
I wish somehow you guys could do an old Obi-Wan talking to his younger self.
Man, y'all should've done Wimbledungeons All-Stars and dressed like your D&D characters for this :)
Please can we have a doubles with OXTRA vs. OXBOX ?
0/10 - No Thunderwave :(
Matthew Downer i mean, he renamed it the westaway serve.
For added difficulty alcoholic shots could be added for losing tennis shots... just saying ...
Do you WANT people to get alcohol poisoning?
Obviously I am expecting Adults to drink responsibly and be aware of their actions - OK maybe a shot for each game won, rather than point scored
"Cliff Richard is canonically unconscious." Makes total sense now.
Can we make this canon to the D&D-verse please? Let's just say Dob heard "The Ballad of the Tennis" somewhere and decided to reenact it with Merilwen!
If anyone ever questions my nerd-dom, I will calmly explain to them that I not only watched, but was emotionally invested in a 37 minute video of table top roleplay tennis. Thank you, Ellen, Luke, and Johnny, for ensuring this moral superiority for me.
2:08 Guy starts walking towards tables...nope.
34:00 Ellen did not roll in the last game, she just used the 12 luke got in his roll.
Akshay Jha I noticed that too! Ellen with the classic cheat shot lol
Akshay Jha I saw that too but it is a possibility that it did land on 12 I don't think she cheated
She did seem to hit the space bar, but there’s usually a blur of numbers before the new value appears. I’d chalk it up as unintentional, like Johnny’s math error in the final game where he said that Luke needed a 12 when he only needed a 10 (he flubbed it anyway). Having that number on the screen while the actual number to beat was only spoken threw me several times, too.
Either way, this was entertaining as heck, and I don’t even like tennis. As heck, I say.
Nope. Cheater cheater... rematch!
I wasn't even playing but I was on the edge of my seat with the amount of tension of Luke's very last shot
Wow. This is actually incredible. To whoever made this, you should look into patenting and/or selling this idea. This looks like a quite fun game. Good job!
Love the guy that walks in at 2:08 and just thinks "nope!" and nopes right out of there.
Omg, I love this. Salty Luke is salty... lol
Why has it taken a year for me to find this? I've been subbed, belled and a regular viewer for years.
ooohhh luke mate you are getting schooled " I REMEMBER I SHOULD BE WINNING THIS GAME THATS HOW I REMEMBER" best quote
I've never been so invested in a Tennis game in my life and this isn't even physical Tennis. Truly a great game that Jonathan made.
Luke, when someone is trying to get in your head the correct response ISN'T "There's nothing in there"
That was way more entertaining than it had any right to be! Really cool and fun tabletop tennis game! There should be an extra "volley" shot that should be the most difficult but if successful, makes it tough to return, for the classic "serve and volley" style players of yesteryear. (Pete Sampras, Boris Becker, John McEnroe, etc.)
The rules say the returns are based on type of shot selected by opponent not on the dice roll like you guys played. It still works but you made it a lot more rng based.
It seems like they did play it correctly for the most part, but they did at times wrongly work of the Dice rolls instead of the Difficulty level of the current shot/return.
Anders Hansen No they were not supposed to keep adding to the shot count. Basically if I choose a 5 to serve then you chose a straight shot (3) to return, then you have to beat an 8, but when it’s my turn, I only have to beat your shot (3) plus my shot, say top spin (5) so I only have to beat an 8. They just kept adding it up which was not correct. It made it go by a lot faster doing it that way, but it wasn’t correct.
Oh, you're right, it wasn't suppose to keep escalating. OK, well then it would seem they played it, with morphed rules. Also
16:21 I didn't know tennis was so violent. If full person tennis was like that I think I might watch more of it.
You guys seem to shift between using the last person's roll as the base for the new DC and using the last person's DC to determine the new DC, when it should always be the latter (Eg. if Luke has a DC of 12 and rolls a 15, and Ellen returns with a slice, she needs to beat a 15, not an 18). Loved the video though, this game is really well made for something so simple and you guys are hilarious as always!
We need this to be annual and aligned with the actual Wimbledon! Great job, Jonathan, so awesome.
Coming here from the best moments video. Can't believe I missed this!!
Can you guys combine this with your original D&D characters? I want to see cat-Merilwen running off with the ball, Prudence eldritch blasting the court when she loses a point and Egbert trying to convince everyone to serve with his bombs.
33:33 Jane walks in and takes off her glasses because she can't believe this game is still going on :)
Rolling a 20 on the serve should be an ace.
Absolutely fantastic, edge of my seat viewing.
'Incapacitated and Urinated', The Luke Westaway Story
Poor Luke always seemed so offended by the poor rolls...
This just made me realize how badly I want anime-ified one-page RPGs for like every sport.
Man, this game is really surprisingly well balanced. I thought it would escalate too quickly when I heard the rules, but the power points were abundant enough to keep the pace right where it should be. That two power point limit really incentivizes spending the points, too. I especially like how serving seems to be about as big an advantage as it is in the real game.
If you read the rules you would see that they played it wrong, the serve only matters for the first returning shot and not as the base for the entire point. The rules are made so you could potentially have longer duels for one point like in normal tennis, but the way they are playing it excludes those duels, unless they are both really lucky.
Johnny's Obi-Wan impression is fantastic!
You have my sides stitching at the Obi Wan impressions!😂
I don't get tennis, and I have not the foggiest idea who Cliff Richard is, but this was a lot of fun to watch.
This is the best game of Tennis I've ever seen.
That was an excellent and illuminating Power Point presentation.
Seems to me like it'd make more sense if it was based on your opponents shot selection.
So to start if you serve with a 8, then the opponent would choose a shot difficulty say Topspin (+5) so would require 13. If it goes over then the original server would need 5 (the opponents previous shot choice) + their next choice of shot, say Dropshot (+10) making it a 15 required. If that goes over then the opponent would need 10 + their next shot. This would make it so that rallies actually occur and the choice of a harder shot has purpose.
I'm sure that's what the guy who came up with the rules intended.
Dude- great idea! And congrats to Ellen, Luke and Johnny- great play from all involved...
Good weekend over here in Australia. Munching on some banana passion fruit and watching the Wimbledungeons!
Great video, and thanks for keeping the scores and game rules on the screen :D
I love Luke adding up his shots and terrifying himself while everyone else starts doing math to see if he's done it right
How am I still finding videos I haven't seen before.
32:04 - Luke say's "Oh Ellen" and Gob immediately starts playing in my head. Funnily enough the music video for Gobs' "Oh Ellin" was a tennis grudge match :P
What a great game design! So simple and well done. I'm definitely going to throw this in to one of my games.
Absolutely the best number generating video I have ever seen. Also you are in a pub have a drink at least!
This is amazing. We definitely need more of this. Would love to see a team ox tourney. Possibly even doubles.
Wow for some reason i was on the edge of my seat :]
18:18 Excellence made better by Johnny's reaction.
isn't the DM the guy who who mike carried around in a baby sling? Now Ellen and Luke take him to a BAR in the middle of the day and put him in a high chair?
I love this channel.
Sounds as if trying to play anything with Eurogamer would end up in real combat
absolutely loved this. Although one thing which I actually didn't appreciate was the Digital D20.
That was, by far, the best game of tennis I’ve ever seen.
