One page Mario Tennis RPG you say? I’ve got it:
Acquire a copy of Mario Tennis for the GameBoy Colour or GameBoy Advanced. Complete story and level both Ellen’s and Luke’s characters. Transfer to corresponding N64 or GameCube Mario Tennis game. Fight-I mean play.
There, done. I predict Ellen winning in three straight sets because she’ll max her slice and backhand à la Roger Federer/Andre Agassi.

Luke gets two extra History points for correctly associating "Diva" with eating stuffed dormice, correctly placing the term in ancient Rome.
One point is deducted for casting Ellen as a household slave.

Jane is pissed. She hid her Time travelling machine in Pikachu, so no one can find it, and you told everyone. And Luke, you wasted time travelling juice to scoop people on a video game news? You could of gone back in time and take a triceratop egg before a volcano explode and bring back your own triceratop. Now Jane will take back her time machine and guard it better.

Since the notebook clearly left with Luke and Ellen but didn't arrive with them. I think it travelled to Hideo Kojima years in the past and gave him the idea for Death Stranding creating a time paradox! Either that or the continuity is incorrect.

By in large I have to agree with Luke that the Spartans were well, baddies. This isn't to say that the Athenians were always saints but of course Socrates criticized the Athenians quite a bit, he was FROM Athens and the nature of the Socratic method is to challenge things to tear down people's preconceptions and get people to critically think. That's why he's asking you questions that make you want him to shut up. That was his nature. He himself described himself as a horsefly, constantly pestering people to as he put it: "sting people and whip them into a fury, all in the service of truth." If he had lived in Corinth for instance, then Corinth would likely have received most of his criticism.

At the same time, Socrates regularly praises the Spartans, and even goes as far as to call them the wisest people in Greece. And when you say the Spartans were baddies, do you mean to call the Athenians goodies? Even the Athenian general, Thucydides, who recorded the Peloponnesian War didn't reduce it to that. They both did bad things and both had reasonable causes that they believed in. The Spartans were mainly fighting against the imperialist tendencies that Athens was showing and to stop them essentially monopolising and creating an empire where they exploited the smaller nations through threat of force, like they had shown as willing to do following the Persian War.

    • @GhengisJohn
      @GhengisJohn Před 6 lety +3

"And when you say the Spartans were baddies, do you mean to call the Athenians goodies?"
"This isn't to say that the Athenians were always saints"
I think it's fair to say that Athens and Sparta were always conspiring to conquer one another, as you saw the Spartans do, with the help of _Persia_ no less, at one point. I call the Spartans baddies because their society was to put it scientifically, really scary. From casting off children to whipping boys till they bled to death as a right of passage to their ubiquitous pederasty to declaring an annual war on their slaves, they did a lot of things that we would consider unconscionable today.
I will give them credit for their occupation of Athens though and installation of The Thirty. It was a pretty bad time for the Athenians and the thirty even executed some of their own moderate members but it was not as bad a time as the massacre the Thebans had planned for them for sure. Though I would take Socrates's praise of the Spartans in perspective. For one thing we know that Socrates favored an autocracy, the likes of which they had in Sparta, and the Greeks as a whole favored nothing more than military glory. Socrates's own obituary said nothing of his work as an educator or philosopher, the only thing it talked about was that he was a rower at Salamis. Socrates would have spent most of his life hearing the Spartan's version of Thermopylae, including how they were the "saviors of Greece" (never mind the fact that they actually lost or the others that also fought to the last man, but that's propaganda for you) and I'm sure that the hardships that his own people endured during the aftermath of the Democracy-wrought Peloponnesian war only helped to further sustain his beliefs.
As for their reasonable nature... Shrug? I mean these are people who declared it illegal for any citizen to have a profession, didn't develop cavalry because citizens were supposed to be equals and a man on a horse would constitute a "mounted elite" and who's reliance on a slave class that out-numbered them 7 to one drove them to a state of constant paranoia. And who could forget that time they invited all the slaves to elect leaders to receive citizenship only to murder the "winners" as they arrived, right? I could go on and on but I'm tired of writing.
I also gotta throw in here that I wouldn't talk too much about the Spartan's commitment to countering Athenian imperialistic tendencies as though it was done altruistically. It was in their best interest to counter these and it's not like the ranks of the Helots only grew through breeding. They themselves subjugated several groups of people.
Don't get me wrong, I could go on about Athens, their acquisitiveness and their practice of Ostracism and the execution of Socrates and the like too but this post is about why I called the _Spartans_ baddies.

I'm very disappointed with the poll this episode. The best greek filosopher is obviously Diogenes:
    - lived in a barrel
    - Once took a dump in the middle of a public theater
    - publicly sassed Alexander the Great
    - took a plucked chicken to Plato's academy, held it up, and screamed 'BEHOLD, A MAN!' (Plato once commented sarcasticly that all creatures without feathers could be considered humans)
-Once went around the city with a lit lantern in broad daylight to 'find an honest man'
    - he also reguarly disrupted Plato's lectures by bringing snacks in order to distract the attendants
    The man is a legend.

27:09 Okay, being serious for a moment here. This is a lesson that a lot of people (especially us men) need to learn: when the person you're talking to looks like they're faking their interest, the polite thing for you to do is to switch topics, if not right then, then soon. Sometimes people can't outright tell you that they're bored, so it's your responsibility to keep your eyes peeled for "please stop talking" social cues (if there's nothing beyond your control stopping you from picking up on them, of course). If it's appropriate (meaning the other person can answer honestly), a good tactic is to ask if the other person has anything to say or would like to switch topics before you move on to a new point in your topic.
Not accusing anybody at OX of rudeness or conversation-monopolizing, but just a general rule of thumb that some people might not know.
