- This video presents a guide of the 10 busiest subway metro systems in the world as of 2019.
Subways, also known as metros or the Underground 🚊, are an easy and economical form of rapid transit in approximately 160 world cities. After paying their fares 🎫and consulting their subway maps, residents and visitors to the city can quickly travel to their home, hotel, work, or school. Travelers can get to government administration buildings, businesses, financial institutions, medical facilities, or religious worship centers 🏦. People can also travel to the airport, restaurants, sporting events, shopping venues, museums, and parks. Local governments closely monitor the subway systems to ensure their safety, security, and cleanliness. Some subways are extremely busy and crowded, especially during commuting hours.
The entries in this list have been ranked by the total annual passenger rides.

The Swedish metro is very beutiful in my opinion. Specially this station called: Kungsträdgården. One of the best stations

i want to get job in japanese..PUSH people in metro rail, during rush hour ..
mdfzly palypopai One thing… that picture is not a subway. That is a regular train. (by Japanese)
Also in Paris metro same same, its rush hour time so fewer tracks and metro for ppl so this is regular in most metros in big cities
And my job was to pull people out.
SntMse but it same on TOKYŌ METRO. They pushed passengers in the inside
Both the train and the track are owned by the Tokyu private railway, so the push clip is NOT subway footage. And those trains are scrapped long ago and the phone used to record them is also old and thus low resolution. This is probably the oldest footage in the entire video
2018-2019-2020 Moscow metro broke record by having less delays than Tokyo or Kyoto metro systems.
Спасибо, что показали про московское метро, а то я думал, что США не покажет, что-нибудь российское.\Thank you for showing us about the Moscow metro, because I thought that the US would not show something Russian.
Having lived in Beijing and Shanghai, I can confirm the horror of trying to get yourself pushed into a train during rush hours 😅I had to wait for around 3-5 fully crammed trains even when going home at 9pm
which line do you take bro? Line 6 or 9? Other lines shouldn't be such horrendous after 9pm.
@@heinlich Not gonna be surprised if it's Line 1 or 2. They are still averagely crowded off peak.

It's too late now. Arch Stanton is indeed a dick.
People like Arch Stanton are frustrated by people like you because of your Eurocentrism. You still believe that London is the centre of the universe. You need to get outside and see the world. (BTW, I grew up in the U.K. and am now living in Canada.) Even the New York Subway can barely make it to the top 10.
Arch Stanton calm down
Arch Stanton wtf is your problem bud
Seoul subway stations are deep in the ground because they also function as bomb shelters in case a war breaks out against North Korea.
So is Pyongyang Metro.
虞海 Moscow is in the same way.
Same here in Singapore, our underground metro stations double up as bomb shelters
虞海 When I was in Pyongyang, the tour guide told me bomb shelter thing is a typical rumor of their subway. Why it is so deep is because of underground water and design failures.
True
NYC subway can be dirty and sometimes crazy things happen.... But it's one of few in the world that's 24/7 and same fare regardless of distance
I love in New York city but I don't like either of the two points. You have to do track maintenance. They run service in middle night, then they frequently cut service during weekend. For me, I'd rather they do it every night, not on weekend. Why should everyone pay same fare when travel distance is different? This is certainly not fair at all.
If you combine all the metro and train companies in Tokyo (you didn't) there are 20 million ridership daily, so it's by the busiest and more complex system in the world. 7.3 billion ridership a year. Any city can surpase that. And world's busiest station, Shinjuku (3.5 million ridership x day)
Too bad you can’t hear the door chimes on all these different trains It would have been interesting to hear what they sounded like
Amazing video 👍
Thanks for putting Sydney metro as the thumbnail, Sydney trains and metro are very underrated, Sydney has 170 stations and 813 km of track and an annual ridership of 377.1 million! 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
I’m the 1k like... congrats
There are two subway companies in Tokyo, Japan.
There are 13 subway lines in total.
And the route running on the ground is not the subway. This route is operated by JR.
London just missing out here, with 1.35 billion passengers per year on the Underground and another 200 million on the Overground, as well as the urban heavy rail from Great Northern, Thameslink etc, many of which call at multiple stations within London.
Came for this!
Exactly I am born and still being raised in London and they haven’t included it, door to door travel for me is 30 minutes and the trains are PACKED.
Lol I agree especially at 6 and bags get stuck in the doors and people barging
If you are saying that all that should be included for London, then let's include the MetroNorth, Long Island Railroad, New Jersey Transit, Staten island Railway and Path Trains who all have 10 or more stops each in NYC
Yeah, London, Paris and Mexico are missing from the list. Chinese, Japanese networks and all the ones that charge by distance and connections count passengers each time they use a line. So connecting passengers are counted 2, 3 or more times. Subways of London and Paris only count entries in the network as ridership.
1:01 That's in Staten island. It's actually a free railway service. The only stations you pay at are St George's terminal and Tompkinsville. It also has no underground stops.

Hong Kong MTR also focuses on artistic elements so much. They use different colour palettes for each station in order to let passengers recognise which station they are in. And they also put artworks inside MTR stations
(KOWLOON STATION
AND EAST RAIL LINE)
Funny because I found an article that was posted maybe a week before this video with completely different annual ridership numbers:
11. Tube (1.065b)
10. Guangzhou (1.18b)
9. MTR (1.32b)
8. Mexico City (1.4b)
7. Paris (1.5b)
6. NYC (1.6b)
5. Beijing (1.84b)
4. Shanghai (2b)
3. Seoul (2.04b)
2. Moscow (2.4b)
1. Tokyo (3.16b)
So you have this article that says beijing's annual ridership is 1.84b where this video says 3.85b. I'm kind of interested where both sourced their data from.

COVID-19: haha pandemic go brrrrrrrrrr
Should definitely include Sao Paulo. It is the third busiest in the world.
I like how the Chinese subways have barriers preventing you from being pushed onto the tracks.
That is the platform screen door, which is installed to prevent passengers from falling into the track. Moreover, platform screen doors are not only installed in China in the world, but also installed in the subways of Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. Platform screen doors are also installed on Line 14 of the Paris Metro in France and the Jubilee Line of the London Underground.

You need to define metro. Most of Tokyo works on overland metros like London. London will never build anymore segregated underground metros as these are not the highest capacity nor fastest way to get people to the suburbs anymore now they have spread out so far in all directions. The London Underground is a smallish part of the London metro network.
Why does your thumbnail feature the new Sydney metro lol
this was very interesting even though some systems were left out but what really got me that so many of these busy, busy systems shut down at night! That is just astounding to me! New York gets a lot of criticism but it runs 24/7; you can go out on the town and always have a ride home at any time of the day or night! Do these other cities have a night life and if so, how do people get around? Do they revert to cars, cabs, etc.? Another thing; New York's subways are a lot cleaner than they used to be years ago. I've seen that with my own New York born and bred eyes! It may not match those of Asia but it's not like it used to be! And probably the one distinctive feature of the New York's subways is its dedicated express and local service with four and three tracks lines throughout the city. Philadelphia has a dedicated four track express/local set up on its Broad St. line and Chicago has a three track line during rush hours but outside of those two, every system I've seen around the world on CZcams is just two tracks. After seeing the Tokyo passengers being stuffed into cars, i will never complain about a crowded NYC subway again! That was really gross!
It wasn't mentioned in this video, but Tokyo also has a train system which is a lot more complicated than Tokyo Metro and Tokyo Toei Subway. Almost every train line has multiple services like local, rapid, express, special rapid, limited express, commuter's express, etc. The most iconic loop line "Yamanote Line" has only local service because it's too crowded and every station is busy. My favorite thing about riding trains/metro in Tokyo is that you can ride a metro and it will continue to a train line after reaching destination, taking you all the way to another city near Tokyo(for example Yokohama). It's just too convenient. They also have special limited express trains that cost extra fares running very long distance with very few stops.(many won't stop for like 30 minutes) The clips showing passengers being stuffed into the trains are usually taken during rush hour in the morning. Other than that 1 hour, it's a lot better.
@@HarryLin thank you for the further info on the Tokyo system. I haven't traveled much but Japan is one country I want to see & Tokyo, of course. I love the urban transit scene. I coined a word/term: UBANRAILER: it refers to those of us who are interested in subways, buses, light rail, etc.. for a while I thought I was the only one (how arrogant & naive) but I'm so glad when I meet others who share the same interest! We are URBANRAILERS!!
@@dumontthe5th yep, there are a lot of train maniacs, especially in Japan. You'll have a great time there!
Note that The HK MTR is not all rapid transit.
Especially aftet The KCR merging, lines such as The East Rail Line more functions as a commuter rail system than rapid transit or metro.
and the MTR acted like a transport dedicated for carrying cops only during protests, aiming to beat everyone on train.

For people asking about cities not in the top10... it's because their annual ridership is inferior than the 10th of this top... is it so hard to understand ?
Absolutely! Speaking of ignorance, stupidity, and blind patriotism. Where is the London Subway? Where is the Dehli Subway? STFU. BTW, being in the top 10 doesn't mean a subway system is better. It is simply a list based on statistics. In my person experience, the world's best subway system is in Taipei. If you haven't tried it, it should. They even play classical music when a train is approaching. But of course, unlike ridership, it's difficult to objectively measure how "good" a subway system is.
@@flyingzone356 they just pointed out the mistake. Its not blind patriotism. Delhi metro has more ridership than NYC subway thats it
Damn where is delhi metro? I think the information provided here is not correct cus delhi metro is always crowded and indian metro can't be missed when it's about busiest
Can you do top 10 fastest metro and subway in the world
How are you going to measure this? With trains it's easy, long distances, clear top speeds, but with metros things are way too tricky. If you give me an idea, I can look into it.

Fun Fact: Tokyo Metro Was The 1st Subway Network to Introduce The Thyristor Chopper Control Traction Motors. 1st Train Entered Service On Chiyoda Line in 1971 (Prototype Entered Service In 1968.) In The Same Year The Hanzomon Line Train with These Motors, The 7000 Series Was Introduced On Yurakucho And Fukutoshin Lines (1st Known As Yurakucho New Line.) Since 2004 Tokyo Metro Started Refurbishing The Armature Chopper Controlled Trains, Mostly Refitting them With IGBT-VVVF Motors. Some Have Bigger Windows. Only Chiyoda & Yurakucho Linie Trains were Sent To Indonesia. The 7000 Series Is Still in Service, But The 6000 Series Since 2017 Is Withdrawn. I think this list needed to consider some other metro systems like São Paulo, Sydney and London
That’s for sure. Greetings from czcams.com/video/enSNpLHVW6w/video.html
I think that having a transit by metro at the peak hour in Beijing is a terrible experience, not only the cart is crowded, but also it needs to wait for more than 3 or 4 trains to get on the train. It is similar to some stations of MTR in Hong Kong, however, Beijing metro needs to walk a long way to change different lines in a station. As a citizen of HK, it is not similar and inconvenient as many situations of changing lines in HK MTR is just cross the platform or going up/down one level to change the train in different lines.
Yay,mine is 7!
Porque no mencionaron al metro de la CDMX? En el se transportan 900 millones de personas al año.

9.05 The above ground Shinjuku station is not a subway station. And the Yamanote and Chuo lines aren't subway lines. Those lines don't even visit any subway tracks. Yamanote line is more like Paris' metro lines 2+6 combined to a loop line, or the Berlin S-bahn's Ringbahn. (The Yamanote and Chuo lines are reducing the need for more subway lines, thus making Tokyo's actual subway tracks lose the top spot to Beijing).
9.18 The Yamanote line (mint green) and Chuo line (brownish orange) still aren't subway lines.
9.22 A Sobu line train (yellow), not a subway train.
9.32 Only the river crossing train is a subway train, Marunouchi line (red). The other trains are the Chuo and Sobu lines.
9.47 A Tokyu private railway non-subway train, running on a real subway track. (Non-subway trains on subway tracks and subway trains on non-subway tracks makes this system so much larger in practice).
9.54 A Tokyu private railway train, a non-subway train at non-subway station. (Note that Tokyu's Toyoko line trains enter both the Yokohama and Tokyo subways at either end, so you can ride on both subway systems riding in one single non-subway owned train.
