    When you think about it:
    interior of Sci-fi ships: 90% of leaving space or weaponry
    interior of realworld ships: 90% of fuel.

    • @ParagonFury
      @ParagonFury Před 3 lety +55

      TBF, it is because most Sci-Fi ships either aren't using solid fuel as their primary propulsion, have extremely efficient and effective solid fuel propulsion if they do OR they're built outside of the atmosphere and aren't intended to go back into atmosphere, so they don't need nearly as much fuel as an IRL ship would.

      @@ParagonFury you have that backwards, out of atmosphere ships will tend to be mostly fuel. Atmospheric drag has nothing to do with it.
      As for being "extremely efficient " I did some math a while ago and found that for the Enterprise D to reach full impulse speed then full stop would require something like 7,000 tons of antimatter and of course 7,000 tons of matter to annihilate with assuming 100% efficient transformation of all that energy into propulsion. Including the bulk of the resulting energy that as far as we know simply can't be used.
      This ignores both real world efficiency issues AND the fact that canonically the ship uses fusion reactors for impulse power not antimatter.
      I didn't feel like working out how much fuel they would need at some theoretical 100% efficient fusion reactor. But it would be some orders of magnitude higher than 14,000 tons amd several times the ships 5,000,000 ton mass.

They didn't have a single piece of Space Battleship Yamato merchandise. When I asked about it, they'd never even heard of the series. @@Halfscreen A big part of the problem is that the series hasn't been given much of any promotion by Funimation or Crunchyroll. At one point, there were plans to air the 2012 reboot series on Cartoon Network, but nothing ever came of it. For decades, the distributor responsible for Star Blazers in North America and Europe was Voyager Entertainment, which was nothing more than one guy operating out of a tiny office in New Jersey. The result was the withering of the brand in the West down to only die hard fans. Even though it's now in the hands of people who know how to support the series, they appear to consider the damage to already be done, and aren't doing anything to repair the situation. These are always so cool, and I hope aliens get to grade each design one day "naw, sucks" to "what were you humans thinking." Also, too bad the ship from Midnight Sky didn't make it in, I think that is one of the most realistic designs as of late because of the curved/FEA optimized/3D printed, soft walled, spacecraft designs.

      I was thinking similarly... where's the Galactica and ships from Farscape?
      Then I thought, imagine if he had included all the ships you, I and others point out.
      It would have been epic, both in production and presentation. I think he just went on the conservative side so the vid was more easily digestible. It's still a great watch.

    • @nicetechtips2629
      @nicetechtips2629 Před 3 lety +11

      There are a lot of non-NASA parts in it (mostly Russian, but i'm not sure if only). I found wiki pages for all of them: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assembly_of_the_International_Space_Station#:~:text=The%20ISS%20is%20made%20up,one%20European%20module%20(Columbus).
      And this is what google says: ''It is a multinational collaborative project involving five participating space agencies: NASA (United States), Roscosmos (Russia), JAXA (Japan), ESA (Europe), and CSA (Canada). The ownership and use of the space station is established by intergovernmental treaties and agreements.''

      And no it's not a starship but it is included here for scale.
