Your DPF is so clogged it won’t even run at this point. It’s clearly been an ongoing thing the whole trip but it’s went long enough at this point it’s totally choked out. I would start by removing the tuner and try unbolting the exhaust to limp it where you need to go. It should be able to breathe then. As far as fixing it, you’ll probably need to replace or “discard” that DPF since it’s gotten to this point.
To me it seems like you may have a boost leak or something with the tuner that is causing the excessive soot buildup. I see this happen all the time on these trucks in stock form when the engine air filters are totally stopped up.

Josh there was a Recall from GM on some of the l5ps. It was a software update to increase the Regen Frequency. If you didn't get a recall I would visit your local dealer and have them check to make sure the ECM has the latest and greatest calibration installed. Also some had some injector problems that lead to the DPF plugging like yours is. If you still have issues after you had everything cleaned you may want to check into injectors. On a more positive note it looked like a fun road trip. I would love to do something like that.

Bunch of comments about deleting 🙄...
That's not the problem right now. Right now the problem is the "upgrades" not playing nice with the emissions equipment.
The white smoke is normally OK but not in that quantity. I think your tuner has a bug in it. It's making the ECU think that the DPF is clean when it's really not. That or your differential pressure sensors are bad and sending the wrong signals to the ECU.
I hope you get it figured out soon! Sorry this happened to you so far from home 🏡 😢

Not always but very possible. Let's hope that for Josh's sake that it's not. If his truck weren't throwing all those DPF related fault codes at him the entire drive then I'd agree with you.
The way the DPF works is when the upstream (before the DPF) and downstream (after the DPF) pressures are significantly different (differential pressure) it'll trigger the truck the go into DPF regeneration. During regeneration raw diesel fuel is injected directly into the DPF and exhaust gas tempos are raised to approximately 1,200 degrees which will effectively incinerate all the captured soot and convert it to ash. That's the entire purpose of the diesel particulate filter. That's why even a brand new duramax, Cummins or powerstroke will occasionally blow white smoke when they're in regen.
The fact that he was blowing so much white smoke is because he's probably completely clogged his DPF. Evidence to support this is that his turbo can't even push exhaust through the intake because the engine is literally choking on its own exhaust.
As a side note... the DEF is injected into the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) chamber which is physically after the DPF chamber. If he was having a problem with the DEF fluid or otherwise having an SCR issue the truck would throw different codes at him.

Drove almost 4 thousand miles round trip to California and back home. The dealership has replaced all the sensors and erg under warranty. It's now in for a leaking gasket. The best tip I can give is to unplug the negative battery port and leave it out of an hour or so, maybe overnight if possible, then plug it back in. Resets the computer. This happened to me before I have a 15 dually dmax. I was hauling a 42 ft 5th wheel and this happened.. I was in grand junction took it to a diesel shop.. they just regen it they never found the problem told me I had a bust cylinder or injectors... I limp all bk to az.. .I park my truck for about 2 months.. that's where I found this channel.. but after watching all kind of diesel problem video. Finally got the courage to fix this diesel myself.. and did. I borrowed my brother's scanner.. I probe the egegg, nox, pressure , map, maf.. boost all them sensors..replace them all.. but the map was no good.. I probe check it. Undo the whole harness and there it was . The wire had cut open and it was green that's where it was shorting and not giving signal.. now it runs great. .but with the videos u do I learned what I know about this truck.. I know you'll get this girl back on the road.. and thank you for the video..

As for tow/haul mode, I run around with it on at all times, the shift points are way better, holds gears longer to let the engine work, and it locks the torque converter in 2nd gear instead of at 55mph which takes a lot of heat and out of the converter and reduces wear. And in my case, with having 37’s and stock gears (4.56’s are on the way) it makes a world of difference holding lower gears longer; 6th gear is so overdriven with 3.73’s snd 37’s that it’s unusable. So it actually helps my fuel economy because the engine is up in its power band and holding 12 pounds of boost, so the engine load is 20-30% doing 80 in 5th instead of 40-60% in 6th

I have a 2017 Ram 3500 Cummins with the Edge Juice. I live in Colorado and we travel on I-70 up and down the mountains. With my Cummins it will sometimes defuel me and the torque management will kick in when I am hauling our 16k lb fifth wheel toy hauler. It only happens every now and then when I am on level 3 or higher. Yes, I only use level 4,5, or 6 for very short bursts. Then again that is even a bad idea. But hey it’s my truck.

Them l5p must be bad for emission issues my co worker has a 17 duramax that is having a lot of the similar problems. It's just so annoying that the factory spends 1000s on putting on those parts so we have to spend 1000s to get rid of them so we can actually go somewhere without worrying that were not gonna get there.🤯

  • @cesare8020
    @cesare8020 Před 2 lety +3

This almost smells like a fuel rail issue. They have a big problem with the pass side rail and connector having issues. If you watch your rail pressures. Fuel rail pressure 1+2 should be near thier desired. Any deviation by more than a couple hundred psi.. there's an issue. Also they have injector and injector connector issues. Also the fact you threw a mass air flow code makes me think you might have an issue there or you have a boost leak somewhere. The other big issue they have issue the def injector getting clogged and causing regens to be a massive pita. Im a gm tech by trade. If you want to work with me directly. Hit me up.

  • @luke7750

I may be wrong but I’m pretty sure Tow/haul doesn’t result in more torque. Its purpose is to increase line pressure in the transmission and adjust shifting to reduce friction and heat in the transmission while towing.

It’s your tune, it keeps truck running reach and generating more soot. Tune is a death to the engine. Manufacturers spend millions on testing making sure everything works fine. Tuning software companies spend no money on testing, you just get unreliable power and problems later.
With factory software truck is happy and regeneration happens automatically on highway driving specially with load.
