- A proud team that had been criticized and scrutinized came crashing down on the Knicks today. And the Knicks cracked under the strain.
Making a strong statement that they are far from finished, the Chicago Bulls pounded the Knicks, 103-83, this afternoon at Chicago Stadium in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference championship series. The victory cut the Knicks' edge to 2-1 in the four-of-seven-game series, with Game 4 to be played here Monday afternoon.
The Bulls returned to their home court, and returned to the form that has won them back-to-back NBA titles. They embarrassed and frustrated the Knicks, who eventually lost their poise. John Starks was ejected with 9 minutes to play, receiving two technical fouls for charging after Michael Jordan. Although Starks accused Jordan of throwing an elbow and sticking a finger in his face, Starks's reaction was another indication of his temper getting the best of him.
The Bulls rattled the Knicks early with their full-court press, eventually forcing New York into 20 turnovers.
This was exactly the kind of performance the Knicks wanted to avoid. They were tentative offensively. They lost their aggressiveness, outrebounding Chicago just 35-30 after dominating that department in the previous two games. Other than Patrick Ewing (21 points), no Knick stepped up offensively. And New York's defense was porous, giving up 62 points in the first half.
After a collapse like this, the Knicks had a lot to think about.
The Bulls were simply too focused and too determined to let anything distract them today. They spent most of this week being criticized for their play and for complaining about the officiating in the series, then refused to talk at all.
For the first time in the series, Chicago displayed a balanced offensive attack that dissected the Knicks' defense. Five Bulls reached double figures, led by Scottie Pippen (29 points), who answered critics who have labled him a soft player. And the most dramatic lift came from John Paxson (14 points), the veteran Bulls guard, who made 5 of 7 shots, including two 3-pointers. Paxson had scored only 5 points in the two previous games combined.
Jordan (22 points, 11 assists) shot just 3 for 18 from the field, yet he was effective because he took a different approach. Instead of trying to carry Chicago's offense alone, Jordan turned into a playmaker. He drove to the basket, drew New York defenders to him, then passed to teammates for wide-open shots. Players like Paxson and Pippen smartly moved to open areas whenever Jordan penetrated, and the Knicks' defense could not adjust in time.
Today was the Knicks' turn to face tough questions. Riley, who has learned to live with the good and the bad that comes with Starks, downplayed the ejection. Besides, as poorly as the Knicks played, Riley had plenty of other things to worry about.
"I love John," Riley said. "All of us have things about us that might people don't agree with, but John's a great kid. Sometimes his emotions get the best of him, but he's trying, he's a competitor, and he's working on it. I'd want him in my foxhole any day."
The incident started when Starks made a hard karate-chop foul against Jordan. Starks was already upset about an offensive foul just called against him, not to mention the game itself.
Jordan took exception to the foul and started arguing with Starks, who then took several steps toward Jordan as if he wanted to fight. That cost Starks one technical foul. Then when Jordan walked away and the incident appeared to be over, Starks charged after Jordan again before being restrained by teammates. Starks got his second technical foul and he was ejected, as some of Starks's teammates looked at Starks angrily in front of the bench. It was Starks's second ejection of the playoffs. He was also tossed for head-butting Reggie Miller during the Indiana series.
Explaining his actions, Starks said, "Jordan put an elbow around my head and came onto my face. When you're a man, you can't let them do that."
Dominating the Knicks in a fashion rarely seen this season, the Bulls suantered into the locker room with a 62-43 halftime lead. Chicago did virtually whatever it wanted, leading by as many as 23 points and shooting 54 percent from the field.
The Bulls made several clever adjustments between Games 2 and 3. They set more weak-side picks for Paxson and Armstrong. Jordan (11 assists) drew two or three Knicks to him, then whipped passes to Paxson, Armstrong or Pippen for open shots.
Any time the Knicks allow 60 points in a half, and any time their bench is outplayed, they are in deep trouble. The Bulls did exactly what they wanted, and the Knicks simply had no answers. Now they have two days to regroup for Game 4.
Said Ewing, "I'm trying to to forget about this one as quickly as possible."

Yes and probably to never return. One thing, though, bothered me about this era (that is, the 90's) and that was how many calls that Jordan received. If you so much breathed on him, you were called for a foul and he got away with committing a lot of fouls on other players. This happened so much that I stopped routing for Jordan and the Bulls when they got good. There might have been some different outcomes in those games if the reps called the games fairly.
I wish the NBA is like this today.

This was the golden age of basketball for so many reasons. You had great players who really wanted to destroy the competition. The rivalries that the Bulls had with the Pistons, Knicks, Cavaliers and even the Heat were so intense. Everything surrounding teh game was better too. You had the great commentary duo of Marv Albert and Mike Fratello, the NBA on NBC theme music, NBA Jam, NBA Inside Stuff on Saturday mornings. Those were the days!

Jordan was a ferocious defender before his 1st retirement. There was no one like him. I still believe, to this day, that Jordan is the greatest offensive player and the greatest defensive player of all time.
He's not even the best defensive bull of all time. Pippen at his best was better than Jordan at his best defensively and was better than Jordan defensively since 1990.
I think the player that deserves that title more than anyone else is Wilt Chamberlain. Jordan was a more skilled offensive player yes, but nobody dominated at both ends like Wilt Chamberlain.

GODDAMN this was a War , the intensity, pressure and that amazing defense was crazy, every time someone went to the basket he had all 5 players trying to stop him , in today's game....if you can break your defender ankles is a free pass to the ring , and anyone who try to get close to you will be called for a foul, the NBA needs to go back to the 90s type game to bring emotions to the game

Lebron would have adjusted to the game in the 80's however his stats would have gone down. He wouldn't have been able to dominate like he does now. He still would have been good but not as good as Jordan. And if you put Jordan in today's league he would have dominated like nothing you have ever seen and so would have Magic and Bird for that matter.

I like how Ewing is pissed off and ready to fight in all the melees EXCEPT for when Starks and Jordan get into it. It's like Ewing was telling Starks, you went too far this time messing with this guy. You don't want to piss HIM off! And, finally, even Phil Jackson is sweating at the end. It's like he was out there playing, too! LOL.

If I was a Knick, I'd be furious with Starks. He got lucky on kicked ball, knew he couldn't screw up again after going after Pippen but screwed up anyway; quick-thinking teammates stop him. Jordan said whatever pushes Starks crazy button as soon as he knew the crazy man was paying attention. A three-point shooter gets tossed just when his team needs him the most, while Bulls shoot free throws.

John Starks wouldn't get away with that kick ball into stands business in today's NBA lol. That would probably earn an automatic ejection and a fine from the league. It's just those little things from back in the day and today. Kids who watch basketball now don't understand that the Miami Heat of today are not the best team in NBA history. If you put today's Heat in the early 90s, I really doubt they would win 27 straight games with the likes of the Chicago Bulls, LA Lakers, Seattle Supersonics, Portland Trail Blazers, New York Knicks, Houston Rockets, Utah Jazz, Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers standing in the way...and those were the elite teams with size and strength.

I never watched 90s ball live but I agree with you! They played so fucking amazing! So much ball movement, it's more react offense, fundamentals, get a better shot for your teammates, hustle 100% of the time. Sigh, I wish it was like this in today's game, why can't teams adapt this type of basketball. :'(

It's amazing how both teams were able to score. This is what I call a defensive clinic on both sides of the floor. Two of the top 3 defenses of all time going head to head (Bad Boys being the other). WOW!

I was watching another video where they said game 4 1993 ECF were on Friday afternoon. Wow that's such a small thing, but one of many things that todays nba cannot compare to 80s and early 90s nba. Todays nba is so boring and hyped at the same time. Jesus, if they really had a quality product they could start showing playoff games at 11:00 am eastern. As much as I like Mark Cuban- he stern and silver represent that todays game is more about spectacle to compensate for the lower quality of players. I hate modern sports

Chris Lee - many NBA fans until the last to years or so were die hard, knowledgeable fans who understood the game on a meaningful level. It's the NBA's pandering to casual fans to increase revenue that brought in today's listless arenas. Also, physicality in sports including basketball is just more guttural and brings a level of excitement that today's no physical resistance, skills exhibition games could never do. Then you add LBJ starting this super team nonsense which destroyed any sense of parity between teams. All of these factors combined destroy any chance of true rivalries ever again.

Jordan is always great. But sometimes the game plan is to allow Jordan to draw the double, triple, and sometimes quadruple teams so that he can kick it out to a teammate, which is why Pippen and others occasionally have the big games. Jordan is sometimes on offense but he is ALWAYS on defense! So he is NEVER "bad".

Series was over once the Knicks won the first two in New York. A resilient team, hungry for a threepeat, with the GOAT on it, knew once they got to game 3, though down, 2-0, they just needed to win one at MSG to win the series, and 4 straight defensive plays on Charles Smith, Pippen came through to win the pivotal 5th game of the series at Madison Square Garden.
Now this is what I call basketball!

I remember this game... i was rooting for the Knicks. After watching this game I knew my hopes for Knick end to the Bulls dynasty may not happen as easy as I thought.... and that it'd go 6 or 7 games. And Bulls pulling it out in Game 5 allowed them to end it in 6 at home.

you gotta love the intense rivalry from these two teams even from the first second it felt like it was the last. this is what you don't see in basketball anymore. you don't have superstar leaders today that take ownership of their team and force every player to fight with the same fire. there are only diva stars now a days for the most part, who'd rather jump ship and play with each other for a shortcut to be a "champion" instead of rising to the challenge.

I was crushed by this series. I loved the Knicks and they had outstanding players - Blackman, Rivers, Starks, Ewing, Mason, Smith, Oakley. People who know late 80s/Early 90s basketball know those names. Just devastating the way they lost, but I feel privileged to have seen Chicago in their prime. You'll never see basketball again like it was in the late 80s early 90s. At times I hated the low scoring, but there was hate, heart, emotion & guts at extreme levels. Respect to all these competitors.

I remember watching this game on TV when I was 12 and feeling like I was about to explode all day long because it was basically a do-or-die game for the Bulls... I was a nervous wreck from the moment I woke up that morning till the Bulls built up a 20 pt. lead. I think I almost fainted when Ewing scored the first points of the game with that nasty power dunk... I was thinking OH NO NO NO NO here we go again, please NO GOD NO.... I was so hyped up that when the Bulls pulled ahead by 8 or so later in the 1st quarter on a Horace Grant and-1-layup, I uncontrollably let out a screech/yowl of relief and sheer ecstasy, and my grandma peered into the living room at me from the kitchen, giving me a stern, bewildered glare like I was some kind of weird psychopath. Ahhh yep those were the good old days... back when NBA basketball mattered enough to make grandma want to call an exorcist. 😁
I was 15 at the time. I remember the year before when they played this same Knicks team and they carried us to a Game 7. Bulls fans everywhere were nervous about that game!
