    Yes... we are in fact in the market for boaty number 2! It will probably take some time, and we haven't decided yet when we will sell our current Polar Seal, but the time has come for us to take the next step in our sailing adventure.
    In this video, we are looking at a few different boats:
    03:37 Allures 51.9
    06:38 Excess 11
    10:06 Wauquiez 48 DS
    12:42 Beneteau Oceanis 46.1
    16:05 Hallberg Rassy 50
    18:30 Oyster 595
    Stay tuned for the actual winner, we hope to be able to make an announcement before the end of the year! ;)

    If willing to consider a cat you should give very serious consideration to a Vision 444. It’s a smaller yard out of South Africa and a game changer of a boat. It’s a boat built for voyaging with features that just make sense, comes loaded out of the yard, and at a very competitive price point. Hull 12 is launching this week. We are Hull 20.

  • @battlemage2100
    @battlemage2100 Před rokem +2

    I saw the Excess 11 last year in the Miami Boat Show and absolutely fell in love with it - especially the owner's side of the hull. You actually DO have 2 work spaces - the salon dining table and the cockpit table. This is probably the only 38 foot catamaran I would be excited about buying, and would take it over a 50ft Oceanis any day of the week.

  • @rabukan5842
    @rabukan5842 Před rokem +4

    Within your price range, there is nothing wrong with a larger Beneteau, and much right, especially because you already know the boat inside and out. But there’s also nothing wrong with sticking with the boat you know best of all - the one you have.

  • @its_dmarks
    @its_dmarks Před rokem +2

    Thanks for the video, very cool to see some of the new boats out there. A couple of notes: I think the Excess has the same hulls as an equivalent Lagoon (lots of space, but lower performance). On used Hallburg-Rassys, careful of the DC electrical system which uses a proprietary digital switching system that comes from Sweden. Hard to debug without their tech on board or sending hardware back and forth. Beautiful boats though, and they really do sail everywhere.

  • @allanmoore7790

    When I first looked at the video I just assumed you were at the Miami Boat Show, not the Düsseldorf Germany Boat Show. Watching the video, I was amazed by this Boat Show, and with most of the manufacturers based in Europe, I can understand why this show is in Düsseldorf.
    Ryan and Sophie’s Boat Choice? Going from the fantasy world of Oyster, Halberg-Rassy, Amel etc. to the more realistic, I think perhaps a Used Beneteau Excess might be a good choice when they become more available. I hope Beneteau has redesigned the bulkheads in the Excess stronger than their Lagoon 450?
    Hopefully your Spring renovations to Polar Seal are going well!

    You do you, of course! When i see these boats i see a lot of complex systems, these windows in the hull are beautiful no question but how long are they watertight? 2 ruders outside of the centerline, bolted keels. Those boat look beautiful in a marina for the sea I would prefer a older Island Packet.

    We have the older version of the Wauquiez a 47 pilot Saloon and its great but not a lot of storage in the galley unless doing as i do using storage behind the sofa in the saloon. The big windows give great visibility, light and airflow. We has turned the aftcabin satie and vanity desk into a working area.
    A used Wauquiez 47 PS would give you a budget alternative to the new 48 you looked at and yes another foot in the galley would greatly improve the galley

    You have a pretty good perspective, a common budget view of what builders are offering. The view from the builders is that if you want to be paid more for a boat than it costs to produce it, build a boat that people with millions would be willing to sail away from their million dollar homes.
    My solution to your stated needs would be to make your spaces convertible. An unused cabin should easily convert to a workspace with a folding desk. Noise canceling headphones would help isolation/concentration.
    What amazes me about recent boat inflation is how it has left used boats behind. IMHO a high quality refit yard would be a greater success than any new boatbuilder.

    Have ya'll looked at Seawind, the 1160 40 feet has great room and fast. The 1260 is even bigger. And of course the New 1370, it has every thing a Cruiser would want as standard on a Boat, like water maker and Washing machine, solar panels. All from 550 k. to 600 k. And then there is the New HH cat's. They are around 800 k.

      If you are looking used then there are some affordable options in larger sizes. It all depends what you plan to do and your priorities. McGregor sold his 76ft for under $200k a few yrs back. You can find niceAmels and Garcia's for 200-300k. There's old racers that you can convert (may be a complete new line of videos for R&S, turning an volvo 60 into a cruiser!), Perfect project if you need to be based in the states for a few years.
      But a Gunboat cat would be nice

Maybe for your favorable features that you are looking for, respecting always your budget, it’s a catamaran length 15 mt your best choice. There are many one out there can satisfy all tastes. For performance or comfort or both.

    I know you guys probably are aware but I’d really be wary of the hull width on that Excess, at 38 ft she’s the same waterline length as our 2012 Seawind 1160 but damn those hulls look nearly twice as fat. I’d worry she’d be a dog punching into the waves and would not sail in light airs. To give a comparison we sail 8 knots in 10-12 knots of wind on an original main and jib (no downwind sail at the moment as I have a patch to put into our asym). She can even hold 6 knots in under 10 knots of wind (without the asym the best we’ve done as newbies is 6 knots in 7.5 knots of wind - and believe me we aren’t racers so that’s all the boat, not us). We also sail with a full live aboard payload. Before you go Excess I would seriously try to talk to current liveaboard owners to figure out real world performance (yes no fly bridge improves things but those hulls are a red flag)

    You will also get a lot more boat for your money if you like Beneteau to go for a used Beneteau 57. A total different yacht to the Oceanis and far better blue water hull design by Farr Yachts design so you just know it will sail well and be comfortable.

  • @neilhansen7999
    @neilhansen7999 Před rokem

    My wife and I have also been looking at used boats. Started down the catamaran route, but after doing an ocean passage from Hampton VA to Antigua on a Hanse 508 and having arrived several days ahead of any of the cruising catamarans and then hearing how much pounding they took during the same trip if felt like there are to many compromises to the joy of sailing. You start off your video and outline the criteria, one of the key ones being performance as you want to sail faster, yet non of the boats (except the Wauquiez 48) reviewed fit that criteria. Something like a used Grand Soleil 46LC fits that criteria better and it likely in budget. Often you hear people say we are not racers so don't need to go fast, but performance is actually about the boat sails in light air (can it sail in less than 8 knots true), but at the same time a modern slippery boat is easier to handle and can do well to put the miles behind you.

    If you can't get the Allures/Garcia, then -- SUGGESTION -- Go buy an Amel 54 in great condition or a Hallberg 53. They are well within your price range, are large enough, have huge storage, lots of "work" room, have both a washing machine and dryer, have two heads and are super strong. in fact, it may be a better over all sailboat... It would be ideal for circumnavigating... Give it a try.

  • @charliesimeon
    @charliesimeon Před rokem

    Ever consider a 'used' Oyster? I've noticed quite a few come to market once the owners have circumnavigated, or when they want to upsize in order to circumnavigate... so the 45ft to 55ft range of boats post 2000 are around the 200k to 400k mark, of course with newer 525 /545's models around the million. Wouldn't take too much to make any of those ready for single/short handed sailing. After all, an " Oyster" is an "Oyster" and to my mind the pinacle of cruising yachts.

    When I was delivery crew on an Oyster 485, we were docked in Gibraltar and the Oyster 495 hull #1 got a birth next to us.
    Later in the evening the shake down crew were having sundowners and I just boldly went up to them (with my own beers of course) and asked if I could come aboard. They were very generous to say yes and I got the full tour. They even opened up the engine room and other technical hatches. I must say I was amazed by that boat. Probably, well most certainly my dream boat. It did have a slight different configuration than the one you saw on the boat show however that is logical because every Oyster is build how the owner wants it, everything is customisable.

    Also random question, what's a reasonable boat to net-worth ratio? Feels like the value of your boat shouldn't be more than 25-50% of your net-worth?

    Affordability isn’t always about having a bag of money. If you have a steady flow of much smaller money bags, you can achieve the same. Euro1.6 million is 13,500 per month over 10 years. That is Ryan handing his monthly directors salary to bank, and you both live on the CZcams income….plus Sophie’s consultancy fees. You can buy things on as little as 1% interest I’ve seen, so work the numbers, and live in the present. Cash flow is everything.

    Being a sailor only in my dreams and my opinion with $5 will get you a coffee at Starbucks. Of the choices provided the 595 is a beautiful boat. However my choice would be a Amel 50

    Great episode and good luck on finding the next boat, how exciting!!
    Please for the love of all things holy do not follow in the footsteps of the herd of youtube sailing channels that have sold their boats in the past year and now are waiting for the perfect next boat or are building a boat. Endless months pass by all the while the channels pump out crap content because, well, they're not really sailing channels anymore.

      Ah, the risk of that happening is fairly low, there is still quite a bit that we can do with our current boat :) but there could be a world in which we have a new boat built and have to sell the boat while the new one is in construction (because our finances wouldn’t allow us to have both at the same time). We’ll see what happens, but we are in no rush!

    Hey Ryan & Sophie! Love your boat tour from Germany . It’s exciting when there is possibly a newer Polar Seal in your thoughts. Boat Shows are a start, you both look marvelous. Barnacle is so cute, adapting well.

    Always enjoy your videos. Have you considered the Ovni 450 yacht? Aluminum and there should be used boats available. 👍😊

    Am sure you have considered but in the catamaran range what about a Nautitech 40 Open or a Seawind 1260? - Performant, well built, price friendlier than most

    My two cents :
    Alu is only relevant if you intend to go to high latitude (or for way bigger boats), and in high latitude you may want a pilothouse. Allure doesn't fit this goal.
    Wauquiez is very nice, maybe the galley isn't much bigger than your actual boat ?
    The oceanis is good for the budget, maybe not fast enough without some sail tweak tools (no main track for example)
    Halberg : good but pricey, it's also not that fast
    The cat... well, personally I wouldn't buy a budget cat for traveling the world, but that's personal.
    Anyway, like you said you'll not buy a brand new boat ^^
    Cheers

    Nice video. It seems that with Sophie's sea sickness issues that a CAT would be a must.

      Actually catamarans can make a person even more seasick because of the jerky motion. Ryan gets seasick in catamarans 😆 thankfully I do not have that issue.

    Wait another year. You’ll be able to pick up lightly used boats at a fraction of the cost of a new one. This will be especially true if you’re cash buyers. Then set up a trust company in the BVIs with your dog as the only beneficial owner. Register the boat in Road Town and save 20% VAT. Same with your CZcams income stream.

  • @thalassaofipswichcorfu2840

    I have the Oceanis 50 from the same series as Polar Seal. its turned out to be a fantastic boat for us at a very competitive price point for a fifty footer.

    Interesting , 53 years since I was sipping beers by the River in Dusseldorf :-)
    I noted your criteria about the boat you want , budget came last :-)
    Yet blew you out of most of the boats , and the galley ?
    You mentioned performance , and then forgot about it , no one really at the helm , once at a spot , drop anchor .
    The journey and the destination .
    What do you want the boat to do ? 4 guests on charter , less space for you both .
    I go for function over form , yes all the wood work is fabulous , at what cost ?
    The hull , sails , electrics and mechanics , I leave to the builder .
    Interiors to my specs , I would be paying for it !
    Work tops granite , all 'wood work ' marine ply , varnish /paint .
    You want to open a door that can cost $100 or $1000 , it is a door .
    My currency is in the toilet , @ '72 levels could be in the market .
    What layout suits you best , 2nd hand needs repairs , new would have a warrantee .
    As for the appearance of your husband :-)
    Many many years ago , an hippy visited here in RSA , stayed in all the good places , was a photographer and a tech guy :-)

    Think my very distant cousin is building your boat in Sweden, he is as detailed as Ryan with cabinet making skills. A cabinet maker wins the Great Texas 300 every year, why attention to detail. Sure Johan @ Ran Sailing would just crank out another hull for you all.
