- Nelson Burton, Jr. steps outside the broadcast booth to win all four matches and capture the 1978 BPAA US Open. Qualifying as the 4th seed, Burton struggles to get by 5th seed Ron Bell, a league bowler. Later, in the title match, Burton defeats Jeff Mattingly in the title match. Very condensed. Chris Schenkel on play-by-play. Dick Weber substitutes for Nelson Burton, Jr. as color analyst. Brunswick Friendly Lanes, Greensboro, NC. March 11, 1978.

Kudos to Mattingly bending that blue dot like it was resin! The days before buying hook in the box.
I use to bowl at Friendly Lanes, such fond memories, what a shame it was torn down back in the 1980's. I loved this bowling alley, very much missed
Do you have the full tournament?
Great to see Burton pick up a win. Although he needs to go back and watch some of his tips on shooting splits. Hadn't thought of Jeff Mattingly in years. Love the color-coordinated ball shirt and hair!
Bo. Smooth as Ice. only bowler guaranteed to make money every week since he was the tv announcer if he didn't make the cut. Nice gig.
How thin is Ron Bell here??
Look at @ 5:30-5:34...is Jeff using a two-finger grip (middle finger and thumb) for strikes???
He was using a dropped ring finger grip. That was a "New" Columbia Blue Dot, 90 plus hard plastic ball. The ball was good until it got tracked up then it would hook a lot. Some balls just started breaking apart. :)
Mattingly was really only 26 in this vid?!
no way that guy is 26, just look at him..
Brunswick Friendly Lanes in Greensboro. What ever happemed to this centre? Is it still open?
Sadly it was tore down for a office complex in the 1980's
Go to 3:26 & see what Bo Burton Jr just did. Really, he missed it? He was trying to aim for the 7 off the 4 & slide the 10 but instead, he went a bit too far to the left on his approach swing.
