How to enable Apple Carplay on 2016 Ford Vehicles

    Hopefully someone finds this useful and avoids them having to struggle to get Carplay working in their 2016 that was not converted yet.
    You can find the part all over Ebay. The software portion you can get the update directly from the Ford Owner's site

    I showed your video to my ford dealership and they are literally putting it in right now. I made it a condition of buying my 2016 ford escape titanium 😄 they ordered the part and I'm looking forward to my Apple car play. New sub here!

    Thank you for this info. After struggling to get the update downloaded I was losing my mind on what was wrong. This is the only place I found this information about the module. I ordered it after watching this. Picked it up the next day. Took like two minutes to change it out and now I have Apple play. Thank you!!

      @valentinaaldana3529 this was a good number of years ago. Off hand I went to the ford sync site, added my vin and downloaded the file to usb. Then updated my head unit via usb.

    This is literally a lifesaver!! Ordered the part and installed it myself quite easily. It didn’t load at first but the simple solution of turning off and then on Bluetooth and reconnecting solved it. Thank you so much :))

    Saw that the HC3Z-19A387-B is replaced by HC3Z-19A387-E, so I ordered this directly from Ford for $50. They sent HC3Z-19A387-F which is an even newer revision. Just installed today and working great! 2016 Expedition EL

    Thanks for the great video. For people still having problems updating, you have to have patience. I used the thumbdrive method going from 1.0 to latest 3.x software and I had to drive for 2 hours and 19 min before it finally said software update complete on the screen.

    Great informative video, found out in my 2016 Escape se that if I pried with my fingers from the bottom, the module practically jumped out. Not much force at all to remove it

    Ii did exactly as you suggested - it worked - spent 3.5 hours updating the software from a usb stick and that was painful. Removing the old part and installing it was really easy! Now I have Apple car play.

    Dealer wanted $45 for the part, $90 to update to version 3, and $125 for labor 😂 I’m doing it myself, 5 minutes.

      Anthony Alvarado download it on owner.ford.com to a usb drive then plug it into your usb hub in car. Should pop up “updating software “ on screen if done correctly. Will take awhile.

      Good luck. Curious on your feedback on the process and if it was worth it.
      At that point I would have been more inclined to go aftermarket since it’s a full swap out.

      Sorry, you may have an older head unit that does not support sync 3 maybe.

      If you are doing OTA, yea it takes many hours.
      I would just do via usb

      Anyone that carries the part number I listed, or the replacement part number.
      Amazon is fine, or find a Ford wholesaler unless you like paying retail prices at the dealer.

      Aftermarket CarPlay dongles have nothing to do with this process. Nothing. Reds to be done other than a dongle in that case

      What do you mean specifically “Ford says you can’t?”
      There may be a hardware limitation on your device. IE: you got a parts bin unit from an early 2016 or 2015.

      No, that module just allows data flow to the unit. You need to also update the firmware for CarPlay

      You need sync 3, not sub version of 3 on sync2

    Can verify this condition exists on the 2016 Edge Sport as well. From what I understand, the usb hubs in the 2016 m.y. Fords is not usb 3.0 compatible. Which is the issue with Carplay and the factory hub. Hope this helps.

    I updated my software to sync 3, v3.0. I also got the new usb hub installed. I still don’t see a carplay prompt when I plug my phone in. Any idea why this wouldn’t be working? I’m going crazy here! Thanks

      I think you need to enable CarPlay in your phone and trust it if memory serves me.

    Can you do this with an MKX Lincoln. Since it is a Ford product? They lead me to believe it had car play and after purchase found out it does not. So I am curious if I can do this with my 2016 MKX Lincoln? Thanks

      OTA I could never get working. I had to do via usb. I still feel it took forever. Maybe an hour ish, but I didn’t time it. I just recall it taking obnoxiously long

      I have no idea. You need to confirm if your unit will take the sync 3 upgrade first. If not, then no.
      My guess is the answer is going to be no though

      Ebber Jr3 it should be the same removal process, just different location.
      The hubs are all the same piece, just diff illumination color and location.

      I’ll tell you what, our Escape has had some issues. I swear ours was made on a Monday or Friday. We bought with 29k miles and had the turbo replaced already, paint issues due to fender alignment from the factory, tailgate latching issues. Maybe more if I think harder about it. Thank god I still have a little bit of warranty left.

      Sorry, I did not record that as that was a precursor to figuring out I needed a new hub and decided then to make a video.
      So I downloaded the software from the Ford owners site for my mode vehicle. Then put the iso file on a flash drive and installed via the flash drive from the settings menu on the radio.
      It takes FOREVER if memory serves me

      I do not think there is support for Android auto. I could be wrong, but I wouldn’t bet on it working. Your be better off swapping for an aftermarket unit

      Does it say USB not supported on your Vehicle screen when plugging in the updated USB from Ford? Or are you talking about the Unsupported message on the Iphone when you plug your cable from the phone into the updated USB block from Ford?
      If the phone, this is a usb cable issue. Either it is a 3rd party cable that has connection issues now and again, or there are some pins dirty or cable issues itself with bad connections.
      If you are talking about on the Ford screen, make sure the firmware is up to date and on the level needed to run Carplay

      I don’t think I have ever said that. If I did, it was a response to someone saying they were already on sync3, just a diff build number than I showed in the video.

      If you do not have a touchscreen, then no.
      There would be no value to seeing CarPlay on a 3” screen that has no touch options.
      I would look into just replacing the whole unit if you want all the cool bells and whistles

    I've heard that the 2016 vehicles come with Android Auto with the default usb hub but has anyone had any issues otherwise?

    I have a 2016 Ford Edge. I downloaded the software and updated with no issues, also replaced the hub with the one you listed and apps / CarPlay still do not work. Any ideas ?

      Did you turn on CarPlay features on your phone and in the unit itself?
      I know you need to enable on the phone, but if memory serves me, something pops up on the head unit the first time the phone connects to accept the connection.

      Correct. CarPlay is only supported via a cable in most vehicles.
      There are a select few manufacturers that as of like last year I believe allow over Bluetooth, but they are very sparse

      Not sure. I do not own an Edge, so I cannot answer for certain. It might though
      Try the update first since that is free, if it takes the update the hub should work

      You bought the exact hub I put in the video?
      Because the only other person that stated they had problems, bought a completely different hub and tried to give me a hard time because it didn’t work.
      I did not realize the head unit could or would tell you to remove the hub? I never seen that before

    Hey, I have a 2016 F-150 with Sync3, doesn’t have apple CarPlay though but I can access Waze through Mobile Apps, so if I buy this USB hub upgrade I can get Apple CarPlay without needing to upgrade head unit?

    I purchased and installed the new usb hub, but CarPlay is not popping up. Yes, sync 3 is updated and I now have txt msg available. Do I need an original iPhone charger for it to work? Has any one had this problem, or know how to help?

      karah skinner did you already enable CarPlay on the phone and trust it to the vehicle? Also I think there should be a car play icon on the sync unit now as well

    I can't find the software update for my 2016 lincoln mkz. I followed the instructions but if I stay on the Ford website, the page never loads. If I go to the Lincoln website, there is no link to the Sync update. Anyone else have this problem? If one of you HAS successfully downloaded the file, would you be willing to share it?

      I cannot say for certain on the Lincoln Vs ford. I think the firmware is the same regardless of model as long as it is not a Fusion. I think the hardware in the Fusion is different from what people are expressing in the comments.

    Thanks for this video! It gave me encouragement to try running the update again and accept that it could take up to 4 hours. It finished in just under 2. Updated from 1.0 to 3.0, like yours, but my build number is different. Is that a problem? Mine is Build 20204. I turned off the car completely for a few minutes and when I started it up again, got an pop up saying “USB hubs are not supported. Please remove.” I had already installed the new usb hub and had not gotten that pop up before, but used the usb hub to insert the usb drive that had the software update. I tried plugging in my iPhone 11 and it would still charge and the screen said “device detected” (or something like that). But I could not got CarPlay to work. I don’t see the screen that popped up for you, and when I went into my phone settings to check CarPlay there, it just spins looking for a device. Any suggestions?
    I did try uninstalling the new usb hub with the car off, then reinstalling. Still got the error message upon turning on the car. I’m stumped!

      Are you sure you got the same usb hub i mentioned in the video?
      Build number should not matter as much as long as it is newer than mine.

      @@PMPerformance Yes - it had the same numbers/letters on the box but slightly different on the white sticker on the hub. I googled that though and it said those were interchangeable. I did look online again and found a new one that I ordered and am going to return this one. Hoping it's just a faultiness with this current hub that is causing that "USB hubs are not supported" message.

      @@morganlang7342 hmmm, I wonder if someone returned their old one in the box of the new one maybe. Unfortunately I know people that do that to Amazon and it’s kind of terrible.
      Did the basic portion of the USB part work and just not CarPlay? It almost seems a hub issue from the message I would think.

      @@PMPerformance yep, the usb would still charge my phone and detect my device for audio it just wouldn’t start CarPlay.
      The replacement came today and I plugged it in, I am still not getting the CarPlay startup screen. I also did not get the usb error though. This one is the exact same label as yours, except instead of a B at the end it has an E.
      I have an iPhone 11, not sure what else to do or try.

      Have you used this phone in another vehicle with CarPlay by chance? Or is this the first time attempting CarPlay with this phone? Can you confirm the exact software version of sync on your device?

    I have a 2018 F150 and bought a 2016 sync 3 touchscreen. It's suppose to have gps but nothing is working, the navigation option doesn't come up on the radio and it's stuck on sync 3 1 version and it won't update. I'm trying the trick of putting it on the flash drive and sticking it in the usb and nothing is working to update software. I think I'm going to just go to Ford and see what they say. I couple times when I was messing with the radio, the a/c controls popped up on the radio briefly and never came back on and the Navigation did the same thing. It popped up for a couple seconds and never showed again

      I think you have much greater issues than CarPlay functionality. Sorry I cannot provide advice on this as I have never tried to retrofit a stock radio into a different car.
      My guess is the radio is not fully compatible with your harness in your vehicle?
      Not all the sync units are the same. Some have heating and ac controls in them and some so not.
      There is a plethora of programming you can do to change these things with Forscan, but not in the scope of this video.
      Forscan can be pretty complex, but may hold some answers for you possibly

      @@PMPerformance I bought a sync harness from amazon and it was supposedly for my truck it was Sync 1 to2 and Sync 2 to 3. I don't know if the harness was bad quality but I spent a few hours running the cable the right way so everything would fit right and after I figured out where everything went, the screen stayed black. It would never power on, I didn't know what else to do so if I get time this week I'm to talk to ford and see what they say. I'll buy another harness if I have to but I didn't know what I actually needed

      I cannot say for certain.
      If your unit will take the sync 3 update, it should.
      So try that first before you spend money.

      Use the same concept in this video.
      If your unit takes the firmware update, then get the upgraded usb hub. If it doesn’t, no sense in spending money on the hub.
      The ford owner site should tell you if your unit is compatible with sync3 as the update will be avail for download.

    I just came across this and a key piece that wasn't covered (at least that I saw) is that your MySync has to be MySync3. I have MySync2, so I will have to upgrade the infotainment system as well as the hub in order to get the benefit of CarPlay.       I believe in the video I touched upon needing to upgrade the firmware in the head unit. The hardware was not touched other than the USB hub

    Great information! I even found the new hub you were talking about on eBay for $31. However, My old hum is a single USB with an SD card reader. I wonder if it's compatible with the new hub.

      Mark Las Vegas strange, but ford does strange stuff like that. I’d grab off amazon since a free return. But the only difference I could see is the SD slot would have another harness. So it would just be unplugged.

      @@zeeh8661 I think you need further than 3.0 for firmware.
      It’s been a number of
      Years, but I thought it was like 3.1 or 3.2 for the software level.
      You also need to enable and trust the device for CarPlay on the phone

    Alright pal if my sync 2 is version 3.8 should android auto/ apply auto work already.
    I have tried around 6 c type wires and nothing is happening just saying usb error but its charging my phone. Just nothing from android auto ect.

      That being said, when I went to an Android for a short bit, when usb_c was first a thing, it was not recognized in any of my 5 cars at the time. So my guess is this may be more a usb-c thing, but I cannot say for sure.
      I’d test mine, but I sold the Escape a few months ago

      I don’t use Waze, but the entire video is based on CarPlay. If Waze is on your phone, it will be on carplay

      Yes, the firmware needs to be updated before the functionality will work. You can do in whatever order you like, but without both pieces completed, it will not work for Carplay.
      Sorry I did not outline the firmware update in any detail other than mentioning it, but I found this stuff out the hard way when the FW update alone did not work.

      Rachel Doreck Ford is very known to just throw whatever they have laying around in certain models that were mid year changes.
      The Fusion must have been one of those oddballs.

      @carriejohnson4922 Your hardware did not change. This is just allowing you to change your usb port from a charging only port to a charging/data port, along with utilizing new features via firmware update if your head unit is capable. Anything past 3.0 does not matter, just 3.0 was the lowest capable version of allowing CarPlay.
      Pretty sure you cannot update past the 3.x path though as Ford released newer hardware and limits the software to newer hardware.
      Long answer short: these instructions remain the same.

    Mine doesn’t have a double USB port, it has 1 usb and a line in port. It’s a 2016 expedition. Will this not work for mine? When I check for updates and enter my VIN and it says “your sync system (sync v4.6) is up to date. Does that mean I don’t need to update anything?

      The amount of usb does not matter.
      That sync version number according to google appears to be a gen1 and not sync3
      I do not think this will work for you. Your vehicle may be the exception like the Fusion

      Are you sure you are on the correct version? Did you get the EXACT model USB hub I suggested? Did you enable CarPlay functionality in your phone and trust/accept its use on the headunit itself?
