I went through the process and followed the directions exactly. It took my car over 3 hours to update. Not sure why. But when it got to the end and said installation complete. It worked! One thing none of the CZcamsr's never mentioned was that the screen gives an alert saying that the USB is not compatible. Even though it all still works. My guess is because i got the parts from Amazon and not from Ford.

Thanks for video. It made the process much less stressful. One difference I had was that my 2016 F-150 would not update from SYNC3 v.2 to SYNC3 v.3 until after I swapped the USB hub. The vehicle said that it successfully installed the update from the thumb drive (SYNC3 v.3), but until the new hub was in, the head unit still displayed the old software version. As soon as the hub was connected, I started the vehicle and v.3 was displayed. Everything works perfectly with the iphone X connected via an Apple lightning cable. I was surprised to learn that I could use Google Maps and that I was not confined to Apple Maps.

I have looked forever trying to find the updates for SYNC to download to a USB with zero luck. Ive been on the ford site , made and account, put in my VIN etc with zero luck on finding a place to download the update. I just purchased my 2016 F-150 XLT with the same system as in the video and I am guessing I need to upgrade the USB hub as shown , but I also need to update the SYNC - if you could please let me know where you located this update file I would appreciate it!

@@robbiewynne8743 I originally did it on my desktop PC, but I only have my phone available at the moment, so that is what I'm using as a guide for you. In the Chrome browser settings, I chose "Desktop Site" because I couldn't find the section on the mobile-formatted site.
      1. Start at ford.com/support
      2. Select "Search by vehicle"
      3. Enter your VIN and select "Search"
      4. Scroll all the way down to the "Sync Updates" box and select "View Updates"
      5. The latest update should be available to download to a USB flash from the page that opens.

Thankfully, CarPlay now allows other navigation apps... at least on my other Sync3 devices. I had a 2016 C-Max and went through the update. I then traded that in for a 2018 Fusion, which was already setup for CarPlay. I think I was able to use Waze prior to trading in the C-Max. The reason I came today is I just bought a 2016 F150 to replace my 2013 Explorer and it hasn’t been updated yet. I ordered my new USB hub, which will arrive tomorrow. I couldn’t remember which I am to do first... update firmware or update hardware. I THINK I’m supposed to do software first.

@@billwandling318 You have to upgrade your Sync system. 2016 Sync comes with version 1.0 and you need to update it to 3.0 You have to go to the myford website where you are able to login or create an account, register your vehicle and then download the new version onto a usb flashdrive, then go to your vehicle and plug that usb in and your system will detect the update and start the process. Should take about 30 minutes and have to leave the vehicle on, install this part an bam, Apple Carplay. If youre running Android however Android Auto will connect wirelessly.
Its a bit more than just downloading though, look up specifics through other sources. 1 your flashdrive will need to only have that file on it i believe and have one with at least 3gb of space, then you will need to reformat the flash and file you download. Sounds tedious but its really simple, if youre lucky you might be able to call the dealer and just have them do it for you although it will probably require an appointment and end up taking hours instead of 30 minutes
