This was a delight, so much excitement. I feel like Blue Beautiful World could go either way divisive or a surprise love for the prize readers. I haven't read it, but I suspect they've written the synopsis to target a popular audience, though Lord's work is typically more literary end of sci fi and fantasy, so I do think/hope it will be representative of that. I saw Louise Savidge read all the first sentences and it had the most to grab onto in terms of thoughtful writing/wordplay in that little sample.
Yeah I will definitely sample Blue Beautiful World as I do enjoy trying books outside my comfort zone. We shall see. I loved both Louise & Simon’s first sentences and seeing each of their reactions ☺️
Sorry that I missed this live. I have only read one of these , Nightbloom. I have a copy of The Wren, The Wren and want to read Enter Ghost and Soldier Sailor
Thank you for this video. I've read two Western Lane (which was ok )and Soldier Sailor. Soldier Sailor which was brilliant but also made for uncomfortable reading as a mum it brought back some of the memories of the anxiety and the loneliness i felt at the time i had my little boy.
Brilliant that you have read two already. Sorry that Soldier Sailor affected you like this. I do honestly believe all books should come with content warnings. Sending love Adele xx
I was fast asleep at 4am when you were live, so missed it. However, I jumped on to my phone first thing when I woke up and I've ordered a few of the titles. A few are not available here at the moment and many I hadn't heard of before. I predicted three. Loved Ordinary Human Failings and Soldier Sailor. I'm impressed that so many different countries are represented.
Sorry a few aren’t available your end yet Janet. I did think of you when I saw the Kate Grenville was listed. Have you read any of her books before? Yes for the great variety of countries ☺️
I'm not sure I have read Kate Grenville before, or maybe one years ago. She is quite prolific and very well known here. Though I will say the Aussie white woman historical novel is kind of a tired trope, but I believe this is based on her own grandmother@@CharlieBrookReads
So I did go back and watch the Longlist - so excited to see Enter the Ghost on there, I feel I do need to read it! Quite keen to read "In defense of the Act" from listening to it though. 💜📚
OMG, this looks SO fun! I love that the Brits are all organizing fun get togethers!!! Hiya from the USA. Pumped to be reading along with so many other book fans. Women's Prize 2024! Let's go!
I had to head off to work, but thanks for the live stream. My least fav from the list would be The Blue Beautiful World. My top pick is a hard choice. I will have to say The Maiden...
I was excited all day for this and when I thought it was going to start, CZcams didn't show me anything in the feed. So I did something else, because I thought I was wrong about the time and an hour later the feed showed me the recording. 😠
I'm listening to Enter Ghost and it's spectacular. I'm going to do a digital purchase (which I hate) for In Defence of the Act because I'm least excited for that one and will swallow the frog and just get it done with. It sounds like an essay about suicide... Ugh.
Gemma is correct, Study For Obedience was rubbish and so to was Hangman... It's this year's Pod. Apparently there was a book store in the UK who accidentally revealed the longlist a few hours early. Solider Sailor was listed as the winner, since they also listed The Fraud on a 17 book longlist, and the judges haven't picked a winner yet, it seems a stretch, but may Ben is right and it should be the favourite. Love these plods, even if I'm only catching up and not live. Great longlist... Except Hangman.
Can’t wait to read Soldier Sailor. I am not going to rush to Hangman. I still loved Study for Obedience but it didn’t make my faves of the year so you can think that if you like 😝
It was a book that was longlisted for the prize last year. The main characters were under the sea creatures. Pod was one that divided opinions, people tended to either love or hate it ☺️
Thx all! I tried In Defence of the Act this week but had to DNf at 32%. Trigger warnings galore for a flippant voice about suicide and general crude voice. Not for me. I think the WP could have awarded a book with better writing about critical issues. Not for me.
Great hearing your reactions! I loved it when first mentioning Western Lane that Charlie LOUDLY declared. “I DNFed it!!!” 😂
😂😂❤️

14:57 Lol - love mental health books at it sounds like black comedy, so may get it out the library 😃📚💜
Always love the excitement!
Haha yes we are all very excitable. There may have been a countdown on our chat 🚨😝
I hate that I had to work as you all were doing this because it looks like it was so much fun. I loved hearing all your thoughts on these.
Thank you Sarah☺️

No worries Brian. I want to read all of those too!! Was Nightbloom good? I can’t remember what you thought of it.
I’m going to read Kate Foster’s The Maiden. A historical novel plus a long listed book: win-win to me!
I bought this for Em today for her birthday ☺️I hope you both love it!!

@@janethansen9612 yeah there are loads of other brilliant Aussie books to choose from. I am still going to try it though ☺️❤️
I have actually read a book from the long list 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Yeah!!! Which one?
2:21 - not my neck of the reading woods, but I am very excited for you to find the Pod of 2024, because I am a messy witch who loves drama! 😃🍿🍿🍿💜📚
😂😂
Popped in to watch now 😃💜📚
😘❤️

@@CharlieBrookReads hopefully it is NOT the Pod of this selection! Hope my library actually has it! 💜📚

Oh no sorry you missed us Amelia. We will be back on the 19th March hopefully ❤️
I think The Wren, The Wren could/ should win. Her best book yet
Can’t wait to read that one Judy ☺️

May I ask what is a "POD"?

Thank you for the warning. I will bear that in mind if/when I get to it ☺️❤️
