- More than 150 Howard University students have been camped out for nearly a month, protesting what they argue is poor and unsanitary conditions at the school.
They say the school has been unresponsive to their concerns about things like mold in dorm rooms and dining halls infested with rats and roaches.
The dean of the College of Fine Arts, Phylicia Rashad, and her sister Debbie Allen were at the school for the president’s address and briefly spoke to reporters. Rashad is facing backlash for saying that student’s concerns are being addressed.
Karen Felecia Nance, author and cultural expert, joins Charles Blow on “Prime” to discuss Rashad’s latest stance.
All this and more on “Prime.”

I visited Howard & it's a beautiful campus but the school is very dated & shows signs of that in a bad ways. These are high-paying students who deserve better campuses.
Money isn't everything.
Why would you put your focus on somebody making comments instead of holding the school accountable it's accountable that's the source of the problem that's the start of the problem that's the origin of the problem keep it real
BNC has been covering this story since it started. This is just a part of the story. They just covering news
@@friendswitdadealer lol news? Smh
You misspelled propaganda
“Let’s Go Brandon”
@@richardreese8038 yes news is propaganda. Is this something you're just realizing?
Yes the school is indeed accountable, the students and their parents, should get legal representation and file a Civil Suit against Howard University, gross negligence! The student can also call the City's building inspector who will, fine Howard by the day until repairs are made? Leaking water can be reported to the Fire Department, it can possibly cause an electrical fire. Once reported, and cellphone camera videos, a Civil Suit is Slam Dunk. Howard also can file a Property and Casualty Insurance Claim regarding this matter!
My God. What's next? A hunger strike? Get contractors in there and fix the problem.
Maybe they shouls have kept Cosby money. 🤔
Wow, they've been painting over that mold for years.
This what happens when you hire your family members to do the work. Its called nepotism!
Thank you for shining light on this. The students need this press to help make sure they’re voices are being heard.
Attending a school doesn't make you qualified to be the Dean of one
Or vice president
Dean of Financial Arts:
Phylicia Rashad likely has smart advisors doing most of the work! The Dean of Fine Arts will have her staffers do much of the administrative and financial work.
Debbie wasn’t for it lol
👏🏾👏🏾 She never is. She is about advocacy regardless of person. She is bout that life. 🤣
Sorry but something as horrific as this should not be treated as an in-house squabble that can be taken care of amongst themselves! NOTHING WOULD BE DONE!
Where is sista girl Kamala Harris at ?
Good point.
I know. Scamala Harris should be doing something. Yet media does not hold her accountable.
Right!!! Soro skeeeeeeeee..a big phony she is!!
When did she become a sista?
VP Kamala Harris has a black dad and mom from India! She is multicultural but a sista!
relax, relate, release
HOT DAMN 🔥!!!!! FIX IT !!!° CLEAN IT UP!!!!!!
Maybe she meant after being addressed, not enough is still being done.
How could it have been addressed when it wasn’t enough? She meant what we heard.
Miss Smith I agree with you I think she was saying if they speak out now...continue speak out about all legitimate concerns!!! I'm baffled that three of the top HBCU campuses aren't concerned about their own campus infrastructure.
They all have healthy and Hefty endowments.
Every student/ parents upon paying tuition are required to sign a Disclaimer, did the student and parents read this disclaimer?
Phylecia Rashad, may not be liable for Howard's failure of these indescrerions, any may have been advice by the University to not be a spoke person of pending ligations, why is the President remaining silence? Advice of the University Legal Team?
Why aren't the parents involved, calls to the health department made for an investigation. I attended a HBCU as an out of state student. Our parents were very involved regarding any indescrerions regarding, our health, safety and welfare? She may feel she can't relate to whining young adults, then the parents must take a stand. My child would withdraw from living in dorm/tent, will demand they return home doing online classes, until this is retify?
Had it been, white students, parents would have stepped in?I agree
Exactly. Parents of other groups would have stepped in. SMH
Good point! I went to a predominantly white university years ago and had an issue with a dirty room during summer school! My mother called housing and issue was immediately rectified! However, this seems to be a more pervasive issue at Howard. I know plenty of HU alumni and most have complained about Howard’s administration and housing for decades.
@@britjones4912 What ever I or others need to do, I am on board!
Parents are speaking out. Parents are being silenced, kids are being withdrawn everyday from the university because of these issues! Concerns have not been met and the dorms were like this when they arrived, so it's not about the students keeping the the rooms clean. Also as parents you have to think about how you bring attention to problems, so that you still protect your child.
Agreed
Let Howard U Fix the problem and monitor the progress....leave messy journalism--creating additional controversy alone. Why do you become Ms. Rashad's spokesmen....since she cannot say anything?
She has a right to her opinion. They know they got to fix thing and give rhem time
Looks like the maintenance men at Howard are not that good at clearing AC drains on time.
mold is not a minor thing. young people's brains and bodies are still developing. mold can impact that development if someone is exposed to it for extended periods. a college dorm room is just such a situation.
As long as the board hasn't done a walkthrough then how can they claim that the issues are being addressed? If at least 2 of the board members did a walkthrough that would be something. To sit around a table and talk about the students concerns is not what anyone in their right mind would consider 'addressing' this situation truthfully. It makes me wonder what exactly the so called maintenance department really does in the course of their work day/week, more than likely they're also sitting around talking. To send a child of mine there would never occur to me. To leave money to the institution, because I'm going to go out on a limb, and say money in being spent on salaries, luncheons/lunches, social gathering, etc.
They all have to come together as well as the students making sure they keep rooms clean , and spaces that will help out. Just my opinion
leave phylicia alone
Exactly!!!
Leave Phylicia alone.
Why don't y'all leave that woman the Hell alone.
She’s America Mom but just keep it real Ms Rashad👍🏾💕😍💕
This is media manipulation ,we were not privy to the entire conversation .The issue is meeting the students needs .They are entitled to a positive learning environment & nothing less. Dean Rashad is a beautiful , talented, intelligent, strong Black woman she is entitled to her opinions. Dr. M.L. King said." A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus".
Shout out to Debbi Allen for asking the real question...are they being addressed! We always like her better anyway. lol
Why not phylicia!!!
😆😆😆😆🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂😂 Yall Ain't Nothing But A Bunch Of Children.. Incredible...
Phylicia Rashad is “problematic” because she’s not Claire Huxtable
😁😁😁
Good point. Dude wants to continue to see her as a television character.
As if Claire Huxtable wasn't an elitist snob, too...
@@truettadevil debatable maybe I don’t think so but I guess you could argue
They should complain!
- the school needs to be TORN Down ! Rats, mold, disgusting!
She has her own opinion, she doesn't have to agree with the student's
Well, no she doesn’t have to agree but to address it like filthy living conditions don’t exist & the students should be quiet 🤫 while investing their cash at this prestigious HBCU…🤔.I’m a bit shocked 😮 by her response. But it’s a political (behind the scenes) aspect that she, as the dean has to respect as well. She’s not going to talk against her colleagues & faculty members on national TV. I get that as well. Just make the situation livable for the students. They deserve clean, & accommodating living conditions. Geeeesh 🙄😬😤!
@@maryluvsmusic9298 I agree, but I think she said that the school was working on it. Today's kids are very demanding and want everything right now, I think she was saying it takes time and try to use a little patience and understanding
HER OPINIONS ARE HERS!!!
So why did you cut the clip when she asked for you to come in and further talk?! What happened next?!
Exactly!!!
If it were not for Black Media we would not have heard anything about this,And the students are supposed to keep quiet,I bet you if Ms.Rashad had mold, busted water pipes and roach and rat infestation in her home she wouldn't live there
She's a college administrator and it is her opinion. I particularly didnt have a problem with her statement on Dr. Bill Cosby...yet I don't agree with her view on the protest. The issue appears that as a celebrity, cameras are gravitating to her on these issues and she obliges. We all have them...some others will agree...some won't.
She's entitled, but I just wish she wouldn't say nothing.
@@msnos6245. She is definitely entitled. Her sister, Debbie Allen tried to gather her up to go inside. America's mom, no! She played a character on a show, period.
First of all Phylicia Rashad is not Clair Huxtable, nor is she obligated to be. She's always been straight forward about her opinions even when those opinions are unpopular. As someone who has both attended and worked at HBCUs, there are times when student complaints are accurate, yet the efforts to redeem conditions may not appear to be as obvious as one would like despite the fact that some work is being done. I have other friends who work at neighboring HBCUs where the students feel as though they are the supreme authority and want luxury everything despite not wanting to pay their bills and the school receives little to no alumni support financially. If you ask me, all HBCUs need a makeover of structures and facilities which comes down to funding (Alumni, endowments, student bills paid, etc.) and the demand of alumni and trustees making certain that all of these things are taken care of on a regular basis.
Is this a HBU 🤔 absolutely ashame!
Phylicia Rashad didn't say anything wrong about what's going on on the Howard University campus about the living conditions of the students.
The problems at the University cannot be completed in 24 hours or less in order to satisfy these social media highly triggered and over emotional and overly sensitive students who are all very spoiled young adults who believes they are somehow privileged.
Phylicia Rashard isn't missing anything because she's a seasoned veteran of the world.... older African American woman and Hollywood icon who knows better as an African American, a mother than any of these always complaining about everything and anything, young spoiled adults than will ever know as they continue to try and cancel culture scapegoat her or anyone else who they think doesn't agree with their whining ignorance, very immature rants and raves...the problems are being addressed by the Howard University President and since these young adults are attending college classes, they should all understand that it takes business time and organization to correct problems...if that was a actual question on a quiz, test or homework, they would get the answer right but since they all lack real world experience and very little knowledge, they have the slightest clue or idea what happens outside of and off the college campus in order to get things done on this college campus or any other college campus.
Well...........Since you put it that way. You make a very good point.
Her biggest mistake was being a strong Black woman standing beside a strong Black Man! I stand beside Queen Rashaad!
She just took her position!!! Do you suggest she put on her OVERALLS AND GET TO WORK!!! THAT'S WHAT THE BACKLASH IS ABOUT. BILL COSBY!!!! GIVE AUNTIE A BREAK!!!
She's has her opinion respect that , agree to disagree or don't attend the school. I agree that students must also take part to help to help maintain at school
If what she's saying is true then the proper response is to support both Felecia Rashaad and the students. Regardless to her Deanship the truth prevails. It seems Howard University would rather save face by reprimanding her rather than partnering with a hotel or some other alternative housing solution. This process will take a significant timespan before completion of such an arduous task.
these young folks these day are Sensitive. damn them she said nothing wrong
They just want they shit fixed damn 😩😩😩.
We must protect Phyllica at all cost. She is an independent thinker.
