    Speaking as a paramedic working in NYC for many years:
    blocking streets and refusing to yield is utterly rampant. Way worse than what it seems in any video like this. It is rare that the police and the traffic agents do anything about it. I see them taking action maybe once a year. Traffic agents don’t seem to concern themselves much with double parking, for reasons known only to them.
    If I were to regularly bump or force these people out of the way I WOULD LOOSE MY DRIVING PRIVILEGES THAT DAY. If I scrape a double parked car, or bend their sideview mirror, I have to take myself off the assignment and do police paperwork. Yes, this is a threat to the people who called for help.
    If I got on the PA and yelled at people, I stand to get into all sorts of trouble. It’s just not worth it. FDNY can get away with it, we can’t.
    You can thank the lawyers and politicians for this state of affairs. Once upon a time, we would peel double parked cars side view mirrors off their cars, rather than be delayed responding to a sick patient. Those days are over. The liability for doing that is just spectacular. We and the police are way too closely watched to do anything like that anymore.
    Again, thank the politicians and lawyers, who are never concerned with an overall concern for what is good and right. Only in appearing a certain way for their audience.

    My Dad was a Firefighter for 35 years and he said that towards to end of his career he had noticed that drivers have less and less respect for the sirens on the trucks and refused to move to the right and stop.
    In his earlier career he was stuck behind a car that refused to move so my Dad's captain told him to push the vehicle through the intersection so he did and away they went.
    He said he never was disciplined in any way and he's fairly certain the driver realized that they were in the wrong and thus by reporting would be opening themselves up to traffic charges for not moving out of the way of an emergency vehicle with lights and sirens going etc

    We had a large snow storm out in Colorado last winter. One country road in particular was full of stuck abandoned vehicles from the snow.
    The county literally brought out a loader and pushed all the cars off the road to let emergency services though.
    It was epic to see the carnage 😂😂
    FYI, it was a storm that was well warned about and people were told to stay home. One of the few storms that I actually opted to stay in. I have no issues driving in the snow. But not this one.

    Absolutely no way I’m going to try and justify what the delivery truck driver did but just know that it can be an absolute nightmare trying to find a place to park in big cities and if you’re on a tight schedule it can be too tempting to block a fire lane or in this case a whole street. Businesses often do not accommodate the vehicles delivering their supplies in their parking layouts. Again, fire department more important but you’d be surprised how unpleasant parking a large vehicle can be.

    Just because these people are in New York, it does not give them the right to park their vehicle on the middle of the road. These people need to learn to have more respect for first responders. They are doing their job saving lives, and these idiots cars are sitting there in the middle of road. These types of people make me lose faith in humanity. Absolute sickos. Anyways, awesome video.

    • @dennystylezz3181
      @dennystylezz3181 Před 5 lety +1

      You know firefighters are almost like cops when they hand out tickets but instead of traffic violations they write out tickets for safety violations. I remember this one time where there was an emergency response at a restaurant and one of their exit signs did not light up red and they got ticketed over $2,000 because exit signs have to be lit up red so it can be visible.

    • @TexasFire_Cross
      @TexasFire_Cross Před 5 lety +1

      Depending on the jurisdiction and the firefighter's certification or job title, they can issue citations. Typically, it is someone in the Fire Marshal's office. The guys on this crew may be writing down the plate #, VIN #, etc to send to the Fire Marshal or NYPD ... and that entity *might* issue a summons.

    Battalion 8 used to roll out of the house sirens screaming, horns blasting! But since 9/11 the rough edge has come off somewhat. Do they still treat hydrant blockers to a bashed in window and a hose running through the vehicle? I doubt it, not sweet enough today.

    That is NYC for you. In big cities, the fire department have it hard when streets are so congested that emergency vehicles can't get by? What also blocks emergency vehicles is railroad crossings and movable bridges such as drawbridges, swing bridges, and lift bridges, which it is really bad luck that the emergency vehicles are in the wrong place at the wrong time and get held up.

  • @saxman112
    @saxman112 Před 4 lety +5

    Wow, absolutely unreal! Is it just me, or does it seem like there's a ton of idiotic drivers in NYC? I'm in the midwest (Minnesota), and while the downtown areas of Minneapolis and St. Paul aren't nearly as big as New York, our drivers understand how to pull over to the side even in busy traffic and let whatever emergency vehicles through. Heck, sometimes when I'm going by a stoplight that has its white light signaling when an emergency vehicle is coming through and there doesn't seem to be one coming, I will still stop and check to see and hear if one could be coming regardless because the operators of whichever vehicle they happen to be driving takes priority over everything with the lives they have to save!

    Deliberately Blocking, interfering with or refusing to move for fire and ambulance should be a felony with no possibility of ever getting a license a minimum sentence of 2 years in prison, $10,000 fine & forfeiture of the vehicle.

  • @xX3essoXx
    @xX3essoXx Před 4 lety +2

    In Dubai it is allowed for fire trucks to ram cars blocking the way unless there is something preventing the driver to move away. Oh and the blocker would pay for the firetruck damages. Also if a car was parked next to a fire hydrant, they are allowed to break the window to access the fire hydrant, the car will also get towed and impounded for a month with a 816 Dollars fine.

    When necessary, and when possible, they should be allowed to use the fire truck to push the car out of the way - and then send the driver the bill for any damage to the truck.

    This is an educational video that is highly recommended by everyone who is driving. This is to help reduce the death rates caused by delayed response due to inattentive drivers who are not following the rules as discussed i the driver's handbook. Anyone should remember as they are getting their driver's license, it is NOT just as a privilege, but a responsibility that we all have and we must be committed to to remain safe drivers instead of risking the lives of others who are doing their part to help save lives.

  • @tommissouri4871

    These are caused by two main issues: The city traffic planning did not allow enough room on the streets and there is no cost for failing to get out of the way.
    Having delivery trucks in bike lanes or double parking is not the solution. Those that block traffic like that need a heavy fine, both to the driver and to the company. Cars that block emergency vehicles need a fine, but more importantly, they need time in public service and as ride-alongs so they can see the results of delays, like people dying, buildings lost, and so on. And not a trivial 5 hours of service, but make it inconvenient like 100 hours, 10 hours a week, so that it stings and isn't something done and forgotten in a day or two.
    Fines only hurt poor people; the rich and well-off ignore them. But time served treats all equally.
