    This is how I started on my Mafia journey. On Ps2. My brother bought the game used for a couple bucks, and he didn't like the opening. I tried it and fell in love. Played the crap out of it for several years, before I realized the PC version existed and would run on my terrible PC. I remember saying how the PC version felt like real life compared to PC. Aside from the long loading times, especially when you add loading across the bridges, I didn't have any complaints with this version.

  • @swaggaroo69
    @swaggaroo69 Před 3 lety +17

    I played Mafia 1 on PS2 way back on 2004 before I realized I was missing a lot of not playing the PC version (until around 2013) since I didn't know the PC version was the original port of the game.
    Despite the amount of loading times going across the Giuliano Bridge and in-between missions, I still enjoyed it back then. But after playing the PC version and seeing the amount of graphics (FPS, Draw Distance, non-disappearing body and blood on deceased enemies), car damage physics, the amount of diversity of AI cars, and features (Real-Time cutscenes and Free Ride Extreme) missing on PS2, I don't think I could ever go back playing Mafia on PS2 anymore. The only exclusive features found on PS2 are Racing Mode and the Bigfoot vehicle on Free Ride.
    Quick tip: Press L2 or R2 to auto-aim to enemies. I didn't discover this feature until Election Campaign (18th mission) so you can imagine how frustrating it was for me aiming manually on PS2 analog stick while dying countlessly.

    You're most likely using RCA/Composit cable with a modern tv that's why it's so dark, get RGB/Scart or Componente cables, it will also look much better

    • @Hallalii
      @Hallalii Před 3 lety +12

      Component is always better. The darkness is caused by shitty A/D conventer in PS2 to HDMI from ebay (those also use component signal internally but their conversion to digital sucks). If you connect component directly to decent TV it has normal colours and brightness.

    I grew up playing the ps2 version when I was around 8-10 years old, and I actually never got past the hotel mission because it was so hard, I never realized you could “auto-aim” and my free aim sensitivity was too low (didn’t know I could change that either at that age). I just recently downloaded the PC version and beat the whole game, it is shockingly better on the PC. The only thing the ps2 version did better was the use of a detailed minimap rather than whatever we got on the PC.

    Differences:
    1. Graphics are the worst of the 3 ports
    2. You have a map instead of a blank radar
    3. Draw distance is awful
    4. You can carry all weapons, on PC you can carry only sidearms, 1 hidden large weapon and the second in your hands
    5. Bodies disappear after a few seconds
    6. Instead of Free Ride Extreme there is Racing
    7. Cutscenes are pre-rendered
    8. A few map changes
    9. On PS2 when you shoot at car doors they will fall off

  • @Keeneye47_Wolfkeen

    I actually fully played through the Ps2 version. My dad bought it since he was a big fan of GTA at the time and it being called a "GTA like/clone" made my dad wanna get it. Though after the first level, he gave up and said it was trash and nothing like GTA. So I gave it a go and since I was a fan of gangster movies and such, I had a feeling I'd have fun. The learning curve like the PC version is high but once you got used to it, it became second nature for me. Cause I too went into it expecting GTA like gameplay and such. (I was 14 when I played it in 2005, sue me) I especially struggled on things like the race, the stealth mission with Salvatore and one of the late game missions. Nowadays though, I don't own this version since it was my dads and it sadly got messed up so I can't play it anymore. I'm honestly thinking of tracking down a copy and playing the game again, now being more tempered with my gaming experiences and such.
    Also just to give a few other heads ups for this version. You can't store as many cars in this one, many of the guns recoil has been reduced to be more manageable, the speed limit was increased from 40 to 60 and as you saw, there are load times in between the small island where salieri's bar is and the rest of the city. Plus the console version has more tutorials to explain certain things in game, rather than having a separate tutorial mode.
    Otherwise this port is nothing like the PC version, but I don't think it's the "worst port ever". It was ambitious for it's time, but since GTA was the big kid on the block, people did what my dad and I did. Compare it to that and then hate it for not being GTA.

I was in love with the game. The world was so immersive. You mention how a controller is much better for driving then a keyboard and I totally agree. I didn't have an analog PC gamepad but I did have something called an adaptoid which allowed you to use an N64 controller on the PC. So I would use the mouse and keyboard for the on-foot parts then use the N64 controller for driving so I could have analog steering. I played it first on PC. Loved it.
    Saw it for the PS2 in the shop once and wanted to give it a try. All i can remember was the PS2 port not having Free Ride Extreme. So I quickly re-installed it on PC and played it on PC again.

    Roxy, the PC version is the original version of the game, relased in 2002. The console ports came out in 2004. And indeed, they are awful. Their only real positive aspect is the racing mode, but it can be modded into the PC version.

    I remember playing Vice City on PS2 and I wasn't bothered much by the loading times between the 2 parts of the map, and anyway at that time, there was no PC version. But, for Mafia it was the other way around. It was first a PC game, and it has been ported to consoles after, in 2004. Playing on consoles would have sucked for me, knowing that there was a better version on PC already, without those extra loading times...

    I remember this game being incredibly hard. I loved it but never completed it and levels in the church and countryside was so hard because it was dark. Not as dark as your game. I guess the gamma on my TV was different. The controls were also shit on console but i didn't know any better. Shooting moving targets is really hard to do compared to PC. I guess all I can say is that I am gratefull that this game got ported to PS2 or I would never have heard of it or played it. But Mafia is far superior on PC and when I played it on PC years later it all made sense:P Playing this game with mouse and keyboard felt natural and was clearely the way it was intended to be played!

    It's not so bad as people said in the past. It's a classical PS2 sandbox GTA style game with subpar graphic but decent controls (there is the autoaim to supply the absence of mouse precision of the PC version) The gameplay, story and movie cuts are still there and they are good.

    Will say this, graphically even with the hdmi adapter it will look and run significantly worse on a modern screen compared to an old school CRT tv, these games and consoles were designed to be ran on the tvs/screens of their time and so when you run it on a newer screen the console has to work harder to put the image out, as well as CRTs had scanlines and without them you get a messier and more jagged image

    I played this game on PC and later played it on PS2, the main problem of the ps2 version is the loading time and you have to load so frequently. Otherwise it completely ok. I also like I can drive while looking at the map, it is so much fun, just like some people do it on real life (this causes the majority of car accidents in my playthrough of Mafia,hahah)
    Two things you didn't notice, I think there is no tutorial on PS2, and on ps2 you cannot change to manual while driving, there is no gear selection on PS2.
