A six-year-old girl from central China’s Hunan province has become a social media star with her impressive knife skills. She is able to slice vegetables into the shapes of flowers, trees and even a frog. Yet there is a tale of adversity behind her talents. She had to learn to be independent as her mother left the family because of the debts they incurred treating her brother, who has leukaemia.

update: I am now old enough to touch a knife
My mom let me use a knife since I was 4, but I was only allowed to use it under her supervision and no other time. This was back before they started making the cute children's chef knives I see in stores now. So seeing this little girl use huge knives reminds me of my childhood kitchen minus the skills. Liu has mega ultra knife skills that even some pro chefs here have trouble doing depite their training.

Honestly, i’m allowed to touch knives (i need to put them into draws and wash them sometimes) but whenever i touch a big knife, i just get this scene in my head where i dropped the knife or somehow accidentally cut myself with said knife so i sometimes get really scared.

Me and my sis learned cooking since i was 9, and she was 7. We learned how to use knife too.

Yeah was thinking the same thing. Sadly in snowboy's case the mother made her husband kick out his own family members when she returned. She seemed to only want to take the glory and avoid the pain. I feel bad for his bro and mother. Mother is too old to do anything and bro is still somewhat young. I just hope she is taking care of the kids at home.

We underestimate children. We need to realise these teachings on survival is better then the teachings that the system brings.
Kindly disagree. Learning about survival is helpful and a wise decision but learning about survival and sometimes only survival because you are living in poverty... I don't think that is the "better" option. I'm sure many of the children whose families can't afford to send them to school would appreciate the chance. Education is also a means to getting out of poverty. Once you are financially stable, you can make the choice to live a more nomadic or blue-collar lifestyle but not being able to access education because you are in poverty is upsetting. The choice has been taken away. Struggling to afford medical care and things of the like would be incredibly stressful, especially.
While I agree that the education system needs to be revamped, it doesn't do well for people to be saying that formal education is less important than other forms of education.

@@michaelpeng8984 yeah, definitely can see that happening, the ratio of women to men in China is so lopsided that they have "choices," and when you have a choice between morality/responsibility or stability/better life, decisions become murky.
Most parents in itself are just bad, but there are true heros like this father here

This is a man worthy of praise, a honorable father, a loving caregiver. He did not give up on his family. Forget that woman. This man deserves all the spotlight and talking points.
This story brought tears to my eyes. I commend the father for sticking by his children and the children for remaining strong through all adversity. Its so heart warming to see all the people willing to help them. I pray that they have a prosperous life together. Such a beautiful family.

Yea, we have a very large donating platform from apps like "wechat" which almost every single Chinese uses, like chinese version of line+fb maybe? And a lot of ppl have received help through those platforms. I personally have donated quite a few very unfortunate kids.

those sweet children don’t deserve that pain and burden. they need to be taken care of, loved, educated, living free and healthy as kids to enjoy, learn, and dream. that little girl is so strong, brilliant, and inspiring. i hope she can grow up to always believe in herself and tend to her passions, inspirations and process all of the trauma in a healthy way. i hope that little boy finds rest and joy and that he and his sister and father live to thrive.

Might not be the whole story. What if the dad was abusive to the mother and she ran away because of that? The dad might not be telling all of the truth here. We don't know what went on behind closed doors. He might have been really abusive.

I’ve seen it way 2 many times in China , a parent have to make the tough choice and leave their village for the city to earn money one way or an other to support their families.. is hard , but they r very poor and at least their father is there , some other kids r not lucky enough and many times both parents leave them behind 😔 such a talented and beautiful childrens 🙏🏼😔

Chinese people seem to be the most tenacious people to me. No matter what they just keep going.
The mother doesn’t deserve these kids. The father has done the hard yards and continues to shoulder the burden. I can see the little girl has also given up her studies to help her dad, that just isn’t right for a child her age. This is life people!! This is skill. A skilled person is truly priceless. China really is huge and so much rich and poverty division is shocking.
No child should have to go through this but these adversities have developed some amazing children. All Kids and parents nowadays need to see this so they can 1. Appreciate what they have and not be so entitled. 2. Learn that independence and discipline at a young age leads to great things. Although they seem to be living in poverty their smiles show happiness and gratitude.They deserve all that money they earned and more. That dad did a great job as a parent.
