    Hey there! Just wanted to say that the 3 level cage towards the cage comes in a slightly bigger size with dimensions of 24 in. h x 18 in. d x 36 in. w for 10 extra dollars and can house 3 adult rats (although I'd really only house 2 in there just so it isn't crammed when they get larger). I paid $54 for the cage and an extra $10 because of shipping. The cage is decent, too.

    With my rat starter kit I got a 12 inch wheel and a pretty tall cage, and even though it was a rat starter kit, it was only around $90, and it's a really good cage!
    Edit: it came with a hammock and a pretty big bag of bedding. I remember watching a video where you decorated the same cage I have.

    Excellent info! My two baby boys are super-duper spoiled: they have an entire Double Critter Nation chockablock full of toys that get rotated every week. Yeah, when you are my age (45) with no kids you can afford to spoil your ratties like this. I fully recommend springing for the Bass Pans if you can afford them - I got the 3” tall stainless pans for each shelf and it really cuts down on how much bedding is tossed over the edges, plus they are super easy to keep clean and can’t be chewed through. They are an initial investment (as is a good cage), but if you plan on having rats for a while and you have the extra money, it can definitely be worth it. Otherwise the cement mixing type pans are great, cheap and just as effective, with the added bonus of saving you some dough that you can use instead to get more interactive toys and treats for your babies. But the absolute best thing you can spend on your ratties is TIME.

    I have the Living World Starter cage and I love it. I don't have any of the original accessories anymore. I have tons of stuff piled in it, baskets, three levels, ropes, hammocks, rope ladders, and tons of hides. When I rescued my two oldest rats, their previous owner gave me their Living World Starter cage. Normally I zip-tie the second unit on top of the first one. But my two old girls have HLD so I downsized to just 1 Living World cage so they can't fall a long way and get hurt.

    Thank you for this! I read online how big a rat cage should be, and I got the right size, but I never saw anything about bar spacing. My little one's never wanted to get out, so I didn't think it was a problem. That was until one of them got really sick, and during his last few weeks that he was alive, he wanted to be near me all the time, and he'd always try to escape through the bars to come find me. Lucky enough I was able to help him quick enough and he never escaped or got hurt. I watched this video and was able to get him into a better cage, making his last few weeks a lot more peaceful. I'll make sure to get the right cage for my other little guys now :)

      You could look into custom cages - I've seen quite a few from areas without a lot of commercial cages and they are often cheaper than shipping in a cage and also look very nice. Another option is to ship from surrounding countries, so if you like the double critter nation for example that is a cage in the US but it has many equivalents worldwide including the Liberta Explorer in the UK, the Savic Royal Suite in Europe, the Ferret Kingdom in Australia, and many others.
      I can really sympathize though - I wanted a tik tak wheel and they are made in the UK and it cost nearly double the wheel to ship it to the US :/ So I ended up getting a more local wheel - it was still a bit pricey due to its size (larger than usually sold commercially and solid metal), but still a lot cheaper than shipping in a tik tak wheel.

    The only thing I dislike about this video is that it's all about people who want to have 5 to 12 rats. It neglects those who only want 2 to 3 rats. These cages are too large for those who don't want that many rats, which is most rat owners. So it can confuse some people. So if you're planning to get just 2 or 3 rats, you don't need such large cages. Martin's is good though, I have something slightly larger than that cage and my 2 rats love it, even though it could easily fit 4 to 6 rats.

      @ShadowTheRat  Před 3 lety

      That would work for 2 rats, but the bar spacing is 3/4 inch meaning that any young rats or small adults could get out, plus it could be a hanging risk even for large rats (sometimes rats try to squeeze out and get stuck, which while rare is always horrifying). So you’d probably want to either hardware cloth it or go for a cage with 1/2 inch bar spacing.

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  Před 2 lety

      You'll need to hardware cloth it with 1/2 inch hardware cloth (a metal mesh) and zip ties - otherwise your rats will be able to get out. Past that just make sure it has at least 4.5+ cubic feet if you have 2 rats, and add another 2+ cubic feet for each additional rat.

      @ShadowTheRat  Před 6 lety +1

      Yep they can have a wheel as long as its 12 inches in diameter or larger. As for saucers non of my rats took to them and I think they probably found them less intuitive to run on so I'd avoid them and just get a normal wheel.

    If I just buy one rat at first to kinda get used to having a rat, would that be ok? Or do I need two to start with?

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  Před 5 lety

      You really should just get 2 to start.
      The main reason there is because rats are social animals - getting just one means that you are removing that aspect from their life and as a result your likely to see them take longer to warm up, and be generally unhappy (especially when inside the cage which let's be honest, they will be inside for the majority of the day). Also keep in mind that while rats are very social, they are also territorial animals. So if you get one rat, and decide a few days later that you want another, you can't just drop them into the same cage. Instead you'll have to go through the process of introducing them in a neutral area - which can take seconds to months and is not something you want to experience when first getting into rats (it can be stressful - I've had intros go super easy and been able to house the rats together from the start - and then I've had intro's go badly and had to take over a month to get my established rats to accept the new ones).
      Another thing I will say is please don't go into rats without being ready to commit to them first - if you aren't sure if they're the right pet for you, you are best off visiting a shelter or such place where you can interact and play or even foster the rats first. Actually your best off going to a good rat breeder - that way they'll be able to ensure that you are getting well tempered and healthy rats as opposed to pet store rats which can be sickly or poor tempered (not saying they all are - many of my rats are pet store rats and perfectly friendly and generally healthy. But I've had timid rats and even an agressive biter rat and all came from a pet store - I did end up working with them and they all ended up making good pets but it took months of work and wouldn't be something you'd want when starting off).
      Anyways to sum it up you really are best off getting at least 2 rats. If you really want a small pet that can be housed alone but can also have companions added later on look into male mice. Male mice are sweet and affectionate but can't be housed with other male mice because after 5-8 weeks they tend to become territorial and fight to the death. However if you neutered the male mouse you can have him live with a group of females - and if you can't neuter but still want to give him companions then you can get a female ASF (African soft fur rats - they're more like mice despite the name but can't breed with them) or two and house them with him.
      Good luck with any future pets, rats or otherwise!

  • @seanmarshall612
    @seanmarshall612 Před 6 lety

    In the video it looked like all of the cages were for fitting 4 rats or more, so if I were to want a cage for 2 rats, what would be recommended?

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  Před 6 lety

      Your cage should be as big as you can afford, so a cage for 4 rats is really ideal for 2 or so rats. My first 2 rats for example lived in a DCN equivalent cage, which could technically hold up to 12 rats if you go by 2 cubic feet per rat. But with just 2 of them they really enjoyed the room to run around and it let me go almost a month between cage cleanings so long as I spot cleaned each week.
      The smallest cage your looking at for 2 rats would be something like the Petco Rat manor. The living world rat starter kit cage is also good for 2-3 rats.
      But really if you can go bigger then I'd do so. Rats are surprisingly addictive little guys and if you plan on continuing to have more rats you'll want to be introducing them in pairs. Add to that the fact that rats are very energetic and agile little things that love having room to run and climb and you'll find that no cage is too big for a pair of rats.

      @ShadowTheRat  Před 5 lety +1

      Vertical bars aren’t as much of an issue as bar spacing. So as long as the bars are close enough together then verticals bars are fine.
      Also in terms of a cage the single CN is a great cage for 2-5 rats - that’s what I used for years until I got lucky and scored this DCN used for cheap and was able to create my current cage.

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  Před 4 lety

      That's a great cage for them! The DCN is an awesome cage, and definitely a great choice for rats.
      As for tips I'm not sure what you know, but my main tip would be to first set everything up before getting your rats, and to find a good vet. Its best to call around and see how experienced they are, what procedures will cost, and what procedures they are willing to do on rats. Rats tend to be pretty hardy for the most part, but when they get sick they go downhill super quickly and having a good vet to go to really increases their chances.
      Otherwise if you want more specific stuff I made a video on rat care a while back - its long as heck, but it covers just about everything I could think of: czcams.com/video/7Azc4QOv5us/video.html

      Depends which cage it is. Since it’s geared towards ferrets the bar spacing is probably 1 inch which is too wide for young or small rats. See when you told me to use the cage calculator I put in how big the single critter nation Or another type like it in and they said it was not tall enough for a rat I put in a kaytee one like the one in the video it said it wasn’t deep and wide enough but you said it was ok in your video then I put in the cage I’m getting it’s 18x30x30 it’s taller than the single nation cages that are 24” tall I believe could be wrong so I don’t think the cage calculator is accurate cause they apparently want you to spend 1000$ on something that’s way to big to fit anywhere. The one I’m getting is really large enough for two rats even 3 I seen on a rat post But the cage calculator said it wasn’t so they shouldn’t even have a calculator doesn’t help anything. But thank you for your video makes me feel better in my choice in this cage

      if you're putting inches into the calculator be sure to switch it from metric to imperial! i had this issue when i used it too and i was very confused. my cage is 30x18x24 inches and they said i could put 3 rats in it (though i wouldn't be comfortable housing more than 2 in it, because i feel like 3 would make it cramped.) i take everything the calculator says with a grain of salt because i don't always think its accurate

      Cage calculators do work but they automatically do centimeters. There are 2.5 cm’s in an inch so if you don’t change the measurements to inches it will say too small. I’d try again with imperial measurements (inches) and I bet it will give you more reasonable results.

      Shadow The Rat I did have inches it still did it to small

      You may have put in the measurements into the wrong areas then. In any case most cage calculators have an option for critter nations and will spit out 5/6 rats.

      @@ShadowTheRat This is exactly what I was about to comment as well. I've done this myself when I first used the calc. Once in a while, the site is on the fritz, but overall, it works. I just think it is a little generous with rat count on the DCN, and similar sized cages. Just because it SAYS 12, doesn't mean you MUST have that many. ;)

    Hey why do you have female rats if I may ask? It seems to be a common trend for some reason. From my experience though (when it’s not involving feeding time for my lizard) most of them are too hyper and annoying and getting into shit and just being destructive. I tend to get rid of more females quicker and keep more males because of this, as most males I know are chill and much more manageable. So just wondering why you like dealing with them since they seem to be just a big LOAD

      First off I have to ask that you don’t talk about feeding rats to other animals here. Yes reptiles need to eat and I accept that, but this is a pet rat channel and doesn’t need those comments. Honestly I don’t get why people feel the need to comment this way - if I go to someone’s puppy video and talk about eating puppies they would get offended right? Well it’s the same here - just like some people might eat dogs I know some pets eat rats. Doesn’t mean I want to hear about it on my pet rat channel though.
      Okay now that I’m done with that the main reason I have females is because they’re the only rat sex in my area. I’m being serious here - the only rat stores are a nearby Petco and Petsmart with all other places to get rats being 5+ hours away. And these Petco and Petsmart only sell female rats, so when I first got rats it was either take females or have no rats.
      That being said I wouldn’t trade my girls for male rats any day. My females are cuddly and intelligent - easily as much as any dog. They lick and beg for snuggles and can play fetch and basketball. And all this without being bred for any great temperament or such.
      Obviously I can’t see your situation but maybe consider the fact that you probably spend little time with your rats. I take mine out daily for at least a few hours. That’s why they wait for me when I come home and greet my family with the same exuberance you’d expect from any tame animal. You can’t expect a dog that has little human interaction to play nice and not be destructive. Same with rats - they learn quickly and I’ve taught my girls everything from asking to be taken out of their playpen (eliminating all escape behaviors) to following me around and climbing up my leg when I call them.
      Here, watch this video on my first girl Shadow performing incredible tricks and maybe you’ll see what I mean: czcams.com/video/AV9z0c1hjnA/video.html
      Or watch this one to see just how insanely cuddly my girls can be: czcams.com/video/DqyZQPOSF4M/video.html&app=desktop
      In all honesty I never understood the appeal of reptiles - they don’t enjoy handling or much interaction as far as I can tell. But obviously me never having one for a pet means that I can’t speak in this regard. I’d say the same for you - if your only experience with rats is them as feeders, then of course they won’t seem as incredible to you than if you kept them as pets.

      Shadow The Rat well yeah believe it or not I had a pet male rat once a long time ago when I was a teenager. As per the temperament with males he was a pretty Melo pet and that’s true with most of the animals I’ve worked with. Females on the other hand have been the exact opposite. I know you say I don’t have much experience with them and maybe so that’s the case. I know you’re previous two rats the passed (may they Rest In Peace) seemed for the most part to be pretty chill and Melo compared to other females. So I would say they’re the exception since they seemed for the most part to be more calm and manageable
