FRESH HAIR CUT CARE! *HOW TO USE WAVE BRUSH & DURAG* belief in fatherhood

  • Since we cut Theo's hair, he's changing right before our eyes. It's a good thing that we are witnessing somewhat of a bloom effect happening in our almost 7 year old son. What's difficult is that we have to make a conscious shift in how we communicate, spend time and show affection with him. It's all a learning process... one of the things that I wanted to do was to engrave his name in a brush, I would have gave him my own but because I have 4 kids I thought it might be unfair to give it to Theo when Uriah is so close in age.
One thing that I know to be true is that every black man needs that "Good Ol' Brush," the one that he takes everywhere he goes. He doesn't share it. It smells like him, and he appreciates it because before every dance, party, interview, photo, etc, he anoints himself with the bristles, to further usher in his fresh.

My dad is a Latino man born in the 60’s my hair is extremely thick and wavy/culry. My mum would refuse to do my hair because she said she would ruin it and she didn’t know how to work with it. She had straight and thin hair. My dad decided to learn to do my hair he’d get so many hair products to help keep my hair looking healthy and not frizzy. He’s spend every night after work drying, brushing and styling my hair before I went to sleep so it would look good the next day, he would also cook for my siblings and I, tell us how much he loved us. I cherish the moments he would do my hair. Despite the machismo many Latin men of his age usually have my dad was the opposite and I appreciate how open minded he is.

Firstly, making that brush personal for Theo was outstanding. One thing my grandmother taught me as a child was how to pray and intercession has become an essential aspect of my spiritual journey and walk with Christ. I taught both of my children(now 23 and 20) how to pray and this July I will become a grandmother and I have already envisioned teaching my grandchild how to talk with God.
Thank you for sharing your family with us.

She taught me not to buy all my clothes at the mall or else I would look like everyone else. But buy some pieces from vintage, consignment, thrift, ross, and even walmart. I learnt to first cut my hair and start my natural journey and I also learnt how to braid my own hair through youtube videos but also from my mother and I can’t wait to teach my children on being patient in maintaining their hair. I realised that living in the UK african mothers take their daughters to hair salon but my mother didn’t grow up with a lot of money so she learnt from my great grandmother and still to this day I appreciate the time and patient that was brought generation to generation to my mother to me.

I never, ever forgot that lesson. It was one of the most important things he taught me and that was to take responsibility for my actions and my decisions (as an adult), from that day forward. I was away from home, in the military and I called home to ask him and that is what he told me. I was 18 at the time. Customizing that brush for Theo was the sweetest thing I’ve seen today. Like many parents, I’m busy and I tend to just buy things for my daughter. I think she’ll appreciate something customized and thoughtful. Thanks 🙏🏽

My dad was a stay at home dad when he left the military. My father did not have sons and he chose to raise my sister and myself tough. My dad taught me independence, I look forward to teaching my children this. Being real with people, I can not be more grateful. He’s given me endless skills and advice.

Love the entries from Yvette, totally had me teary eyed as she spoke with my feelings being one in the same of my very own. Intentionality is so vital and I am so grateful to see you guys do just that! Still chewing on your question Bro...but what I'm most excited about is being present. ❤ and shout out to baby Uzi!! Emotional to say the least. But, refreshingly honest and uplifting video at the same time. Passing down a family heirloom that has so much significance is dope. Congrats to young Theo on his new journey and growth. And Thank you to Mrs. Melanin for the godly insight and reflection that has touched hearts of many mothers and parents alike. That was phenomenal! Keep on teaching and reaching through your family. Protect your life.👏👏👏👏👍👍🙏🙏😄😄

This is awesome! My Mom and Grandma taught me a whole lot, but one thing that sticks out is that my Mother taught me to sing harmony. Both she and my Grandma sang in church, solos in weddings and funerals. I have done the same. This is a precious memory for me because I remember sitting on the step with her learning and I was young. I felt I was about 4, but I don't remember, but I remember her getting a little frustrated like "that's not it," but she kept working with me! LOL They are both in Heaven now, and those memories of singing 3 part harmony with the two of them is precious. God bless!

There is an amazing wisdom coming out through Theo. It is as if something has been unlocked. Of course it has always been there, but perhaps we did not see the wise child that was always there, and only saw the cute little boy with dreads. Interestingly, the wise child with an interesting sense of humor shines through now, more vividly than before. His humor when Uriah said that he looked like grandpa and Theo's response about who Uriah looked like, but ended up with a burst of laughter! But it was not a childish laughter or giggle, but it was the laugh of an older soul who chose not to say what he was thinking, but found it so amusing.
Likewise when he was telling his mom to look at the man in another booth, and when they looked at the wrong time, and the laughter and sweet joyful moment that they shared. It was so beautiful to watch, and clearly he is such an amazing young person emerging from his younger self. Thanks for sharing this snippet from your lives with your viewers.

Yvette, I don't want to make this long so I'll just say that your closing was very heartfelt...we often talk about the middle child syndrome and the baby of the family yet, the eldest is most often overlooked. Being the oldest myself, I can hinestly say that we too have a battle that is often overshadowed by the younger siblings. I have a very soft spot for the first borns and appreciate your closing words.💞

Since I started my locs 3 years ago, Theo's hair has been "hair goals" for me. So, I was a bit disappointed that he wanted to cut it. But after seeing him with so much joy and love for himself, checking himself out in the mirror, it's greater than any hair style. Theo, I love that you love your new look. I love that you are expressing yourself and speaking up for what you want. I love to see that smile on your face.
