  • And what if you make a stream... without water?! The idea in general is not new, "dry" reservoirs have long been arranged in Japanese gardens. Such a replacement has its advantages. Everyone can handle the work and it will take quite a bit of time. The costs will be several times less than during the construction of a full-flowing stream. You don't have to worry about pumps and filters. And do not discount the safety of children and pets - the choice will be clearly in favor of a dry stream!
Where to place a dry stream
With a dry stream, you can surround the gazebo, let it run along the edge of an extended mixborder and even along the edge of the plot, beautifully decorating part of the drainage ditch. The beginning of a dry stream will naturally look at the foot of an alpine slide, and it can flow into a real or dry pond, get lost at the fence in the thick of bushes.
    Marking of a dry stream
Outline where the beginning of the flow will be and where the end will be. The source should be higher than the mouth. The next task is to connect both points so that the riverbed turns out to be moderately winding, skirting the hills and, most importantly, the natural shape. The easiest way to outline the desired contours is with a long garden hose.
Avoid the trees in the path of the stream. Firstly, so that the roots do not suffer, and secondly, so that later you do not have to scrupulously clean the pebbles from fallen leaves and needles. Although owners of garden vacuum cleaners should not be afraid of this problem, it is easy to maintain cleanliness with its help. Also take note that to mow the lawn next to the stream, you need a lawn mower with a grass collector.
Marking the riverbed, make it of different widths, let there be backwaters and narrowings. Beat a long stream with an island. And at the intersection with garden paths, you can put bridges slightly raised above the level of the plot, or more spectacular "humpback". But do not overdo it with the steepness, because they will have to be overcome not only on foot, but also to carry a garden wheelbarrow there.
