- I love getting questions in my DMs but sadly I can't answer them all especially if it's questions that keep on being repeated. One of the most frequent is from people who are a little unsure whether they want to splash out on a dedicated trials bike and want to know if a dirt jump bike would work instead.
So let's find out!
The Cute Thief collected a host of DJ and street trials parts and a suitable frame. For a change I decided to make it stand out a little more with a home spray job and I'm so pleased with the results!
I don't yet find out how capable it is for trials but better believe I've got a serious test for it coming up soon!
What do you think?
See you next week!

There’s such a unique charm to all your build videos, and whether or not you go to the effort of making a rigid script they’re always seamless as well. Might be my favorite bike content to watch tbh
I film with a rough narrative, sometimes I’ll add something if it comes up but when I’m editing is when I come up with the script…I’m glad you like the videos! 🤘🏻
same feeling bro
Who doesn't love a new ali c video on a friday.
Oh yes, saw this and am now having a trailside break! Definitely an interesting gear ratio for an average dirt jump bike but I'm not even surprised to see it here🤣🤌
So awesome the paint job
Thank you :)
Sweet! Can't wait for the ride video.
Gorgeous paint! 😍
Thank you!
Looking amazing
Thank you :)
I’ve been planning on throwing a front brake on my dj forever. Stoked to watch the results!
Ali, this was so inspiring. I had gone done a DJ path 10 years ago, tried to ride it as a street trials bike, but it was such low quality and heavy, I got rid of it. I would like to revisit this myself, but have so much invested into MTB now. Classy paint work!
The Bike looks amazing👍.I'am excited about the next Video with this Bike🤟
Thank you :)
That's definitely one of the sickest bikes I've ever seen! Love the idea of doing this dirt-trial crossover. If it is controllable, then this would actually be the perfect bike for my style of riding. And I love the colour, it just fits 👍
In my opinion the best build besides the silver and the red Hex. Hexes. Whatever...
Thank you! There’s no doubt this type of bike can be ridden to a high standard for street trials, look at Chris Akrigg on his mongoose fireball for proof 👍🏻
Believe me, this is the best video ever. It's perfect. I have watched tones of videos and this contains everything a person may be looking for. I have a DJ bike, and you have given me some ideas to make it lighter. I used to think that those rims were not appropriate to hold the jumps. Thank you for sharing this. Such a hero.
That is quite possibly the best bike paintjob I've seen.
Now that’s a compliment, thank you!
The frame looks insanely good. Amazing job painting it. 👏👏
Thank you! 🤘🏻
paint looks just incredible, what a great idea for colors!
Thanks very much!
Oh Ali, the paint job is beautiful! Glad you went with purple for the base.
The saddle works sooo well!
Can't wait to see what you get up to on it.
Thanks Aaron, I think the colors worked out pretty well :)
amazing build!! love the paint job
Cheers!
such a sweet build. These build videos always make me want to go out and tinker on my own bikes!
Good to hear!
Yeah! Can't say how much I'm excited seeing this build! DJ vs Street trial was exactly question I was thinking for a while and even asked my favourite pro - you. Can't wait your next videos whis proper tests and opinion! Thank you, Ali, you are always doing our life little better.
For last year thought about exactly that Dartmoor and Pike combo vs Extention Drax for my training bike for street and trials learning. But bought slightly used Czar Ion 24", for cheap. Hope it will hold some abuse)
I look forward to getting out riding it and sharing my results 😁
Love this build! The bike looks dreamy.
it looks so amazing. well done. i love the color theme
Damn, the video ive been waiting for
Yes yes… been waiting to see this project build for a while. Looks great!
Thanks Jay!
That paint job looks awesome! great job!
Cheers Philip ❤️
this is exciting !
maybe u should ride some dirt jumps on it that'll be a great video
If I can find some(and I dare ride them) I will 👍🏻
Nice ! The build, paint 👍👍👍. Keep up the good job.
Thanks Patrick!
Awwww purple! Yes
That’s bad ass! Thinking of doing the same thing with an old Specialized P3
I’m a complete paint noob and it worked out well, take your time and you’ll get a good result I’m sure 👍🏻
I love that I can still pick up ittle interesting hacks from your videos every once in a while. They really are a joy to watch.
Man that’s awesome to see how much love you put into this bike build, and it absolutely shows!!! It came out amazing, I can’t wait to see you ride that thing
Thank you very much! 👍🏻
Love this bike super nice paint job👏
Thanks very much :)
Really awesome, good job, unique and good looking! Versatile, too
Love this video, really relaxing watching this!
Gorgeous ride! I have never built my own bike up, but if I did, and money was no object, I would do something like this. The paint job looks fantastic! Nicely done sir!
Wow, just wow. what an absolute beaut!!
Thanks Dan 👍🏻
The DJ / BMX rider in me is very happy about this video.. I only wish I could have those bars on my DJ
Excellence! That paint job! 👌🏼🔥
Wow sweet build! You must have read my mind, I’ve been recently contemplating building a dirt jumper/trials bike hybrid. Looking forward to the finding out the answer to the question, although given how you can shred a fat bike it might not be so applicable to us mere mortals 😁
Yeah I think this style of crossover bike could be a great type of bike for a lot of people…even if I’ve had a lot of trials practice I’ll try and be honest with my opinions 😋
Awesome build! Love the colors too
Thanks!
Fun project with stunning result.
that is such a sweet bike and the paint job looks unreal
Thank you :)
Beautiful paint job, well done!
Thanks very much :)
Amazing work Ali. That's awesome to see the work you've been putting in. Seriously awesome stuff. Thanks
What a super cool bike and a nice video!🥳
I love this simple idea with the splashes of paint and wonder why more people haven't thought of it before.
Thank you very much for this inspiration.
I've been thinking about what my new design on the bike could look like for a long time.
Believe me plenty of people have done paint like this haha, gonna give it a try?
Love how much effort you put into these videos! Nice one once again!👊🏼
Thanks very much :)
Great build, and build video!
looks awesome, ive always been curious about dirt jump/street trials conversioninging... looking forward to future videos on this!
Really looking forward to seeing a ride on this!

Nice bike. Great job on the paintwork 👍
Thanks James!
Looks great!
Thank you :)
Do bike builds more often please
I would but I think I need to start selling the old ones, I’ve run out of space!
@@Ali_Clarkson Would get a fair penny for the 80s GT I think 🤣 Wanted one of those soooo bad but the shop i worked in did not sell GTs
Fantastic looking build Ali.
Thanks very much!
That looks absolutely phenomenal
Thanks Jamie!
Always lovin it
Gorgeous bicycle
Love the paint job, just might steal it for my next project
Be my guest! 😁
Super inspiring build that looks so so rad! Totally makes me keen on re-painting my trusty mtb-commuter and potentially my dirtjumper after that 👌
Go for it, if I can do it anyone can 😂
That turned out great!
Thanks Joel!
Tasty indeed. Really liking the look of that bike 👍🏻 looking forward to videos.
Nice build Ali,oh the irony, you release this the day I pick up my purple flip pre ordered Trek mtb. Although I am not a trials rider, and never likely to be ( I am now 53) I do find your videos both informative and entertaining..keep up the good work. :-)
Thanks for joining me, enjoy the bike! 👍🏻
So nice and I'm excited to your next video testing that beast🔥🍻
Cheers :)
Absolutely quality paint job! Didn't even know about the multiple primer layers. Stoked to see what you can do on this thing. I had that frame and slammed the stays but had a heatsink tensioner also. Really want those hayes brakes after all your reviews of them.
Sick bike build brother!
Very James Barton! Looks like a fun ride 👍
Yeah he kills it on his!!
That bike looks sick man.Great job with painting the frame.Enjoyed the whole video, well done....
As usual, very nice build Ali!!
Thank you 👍🏻
Wish my two6player setup looked as sweet as this!!! Superb build
Amazing looking build!
Cheers!
@@Ali_Clarkson haha. No problem man. You and the cute thief never disappoint!
Thanks to leaving off the chrome you are now firmly in the 90s! You should use a slap bracelet to tie up your brake lines.
I’ll see if I can find one 😋
Aaaaand now I want to paint my trials bike that has a perfectly good paint job.. this build came out great!
Tbf this one had a perfectly fine paint job too 😋
Great build :) nice work on the paint to looks great :)
Thank you 👍🏻
That was a very entertaining watch. Nice one Ali ✌️
Your bike builds are my meditation sessions.
Great video, amazing bike. I like your bike build videos. 👍
Happy to hear it, thanks very much 🤘🏻
Cute thief!
Testing Trail Riding on a DJ bike is really a great idea. Looking forward to the next vid ;-) thx
Cheers Daniel :)
Exactly what I was looking for
Hey Ali Clarkson! The only way that paint job could look cooler is if it had a few battle scars! Hope you and Jane Black have a nice day! Ride ride ride!
Don’t worry it’ll be getting some soon no doubt! Have a good weekend 👍🏻
been wanting to see this video for years ahaha!! and what a sick build...
Thank you :)
Thoroughly enjoyed that. The paint is proof that the prep is well worth the effort. And 'Rough Scotch Pad' did make me laugh :)
Haha thank you 🤘🏻
Sick build & color. 😍👍
really really cool!
Bike looks pretty good. Nice paint job too.
Thank you 👍🏻
@@Ali_Clarkson funny enough 5 yrs or so ago I converted a jump frame to a trials bike. soon found out I'm not very good and slowly covered it back. But if I get the chance I might still try a fewtrials moves. A bit tricky when you a approaching 50 and are built for riding Exmoor. 😄
Such a beautiful bike🔥. Love it) Great work, Ali. And Hi from Kyrgyzstan
Hi! Glad you’re keen 😁
bloody nice mate
very nice bike
I really enjoy the narration style and no music
Such great videos
Thank you :)
Very cool to find this. I am considering a tweak along these lines. I am tempted to try and make a modern spin on the original "stock" MTB trials bikes. I hope to take my Specialized P2 DJ bike, add one gear and either a short derailleur or manual swap spring chain tensioner to have a 2-speed bike. I'd like a typical DJ gear ratio along with a trials one. Currently looking at a 30t front with a 14t for DJ and slipping in a 25t for trials. I'd like something that can still rip on the longer street rides and and the DJ park, but also allow me to swap quickly to a trials gear for kicks and hops. Thanks for all the info and inspiration. Always great to see your attention to detail on builds like this.
A dream well done luv it
Cheers!
nice paint job !
Thank you!
Love it!
My favourite bike build videos on the internet. Brilliant Ali. The saddle is a bit ott for me though
Thanks Warb! The saddle is on the edge for me but I think it works…I tried a black one and it didn’t quite have the same effect
