      Would have been nice to have had Melanie join the RM2 Family but I don't blame ya. Basically instead of innovating over the last 2 years all remarkable did was come up with a subscription plan and give users the options of buying a previously "stock version" of the RM2 for $$ a month or getting a unit devoid of any features for a still very large purchase price.
      Who the fk is steering the ship over there! I love my RM2 but I am now seriously worried the company is about to go belly.

    • @hansrens2453
      @hansrens2453 Před 2 lety

      When I read about this move, I came to exactly that conclusions :
      * both my rm1 and rm2 are great devices
      * handwriting and send-to-email are necessary functions that were added later than I had hoped for, but they were finally added.
      * screen sharing, over usb, was nice. I liked it.
      * although I sincerely HOPED they would add a 'share documents with another remarkable device' (as in: my household now has 2 devices, but cannot sync them between us? How will anyone, ever, use this in a team? (I didn't ask for simultaneously changing the doc, just put it on both devices and let me read it (in public transport) ?
      But
      He's 100% right: everyone can understand that a device's price may change, but
      * pretending a discount while upping the base price?
      * taking away basic and necessary capabilities unless adding a 100$-a-year subscription?
      I too cannot imagine that will attract new buyers.
      AND
      This move may motivate 3rd parties to use the Linux/unix part of the OS to uncouple remarkable devices from rm services all the way. Asking a one-off 100$ might work.

    Voya love the passion - did a live this afternoon. My assumption this is all VC driven which they took in 2019. It is about company valuation and what they expect. That is why I say never take unneeded money. All the VC’s want is ROÍ and they are not seeing it. 30,000 units sold is only $20MM top line. Just not enough money in the game. If they don’t get subscribers and grow top line I don’t think you will see a rM3 no bank or VC will take them on and will die a slow death. Think this was the plan when they took the VC money. Anyways I explain all the banking information on my channel. Just trying to recover funds to grow and a hardware company with minimal accessories is not going to get to the 1B valuation I am sure the VC’s are screaming for. Great video!!

      I my opinion you are right! The company had not much other choice if they want to grow and develop new competitive devices in the future: this costs a lot of money. Will they find enough subscribers for basic functionalities and grow? This situation is not looking good for loyal customers: when the don't make it, rM will go bankrupt sooner or later an will leave us in the dark with unsupported devices. When they are successful with it, we have to pay subscription fees as soon we get a rM3 device. Either way, two bad choices...

    The new 'business' model made me to finally put on paper device vs actual paper discussion.
    Remarkable 2 - 529 euro + 8euro/ month subscription
    Paper: 3xa4 quality notebooks = 5 euro
    with an average of 3 A4 pages per day( that is a lot of writting for notes, for me at least) you get aprox 150 days per set
    adding to a year(365day) ~ 12.5 Euro
    times 40 years, a lifetime of writing=> 500 Euro
    So the cost of a lifetime of writing is LESS than the device itself (without subscription).
    A device which in the the perfect world could last you more than 10 years. probl half of that in real world.
    I totally understand the advantages(screen, portability, integration and sharing) but the difference is simply ridiculous for a Paper replacement. The company which will release such device at half the price and without a subscription mambo jambo model, will have the success not with niche market but with the broader audience which is already looking for a distraction free but somewhat connected model

    I have two friends who rave about their Remarkable(s). I was finally tempted this week and went on their website to possibly order. But when I saw the subscription, I stopped. I don't want to pay a subscription, not after spending so much money on a device. I toyed with the idea of getting it with the "connect discount" and cancelling the subscription after the first three months, but I would lose functionality. Spending sooo much on a device for it to not work properly isn't viable. I was sad.
    Then I discovered there were other devices around and I watched your videos. The result? I ordered a Supernote A5X. It's roughly £100 more than the Remarkable with "discount" if I cancel the subscription, but it will have full functionality.

IMO, the main point is that without a Roadmap of upcoming new features, there is no reason to buy this "plateform" (or you're wealthy and money is no object). I had a happy thought a few minutes ago in the middle of all this. Adafruit has started selling e-ink screens. Small e-ink screens, but they could possibly sell bigger ones. Why is that important? Because if you have a 10-inch diagonal screen, a Raspberry Pi, and some skills, you can build your own e-ink device and back up to your own server. Or to whatever online service you like where you can share. See where I'm going with this? Maybe everyone is not inclined to join the Make culture, but for those who can, there might even be a business opportunity there. Just don't get greedy!

    I am with you totally in this. Rem 1 user for 2.5 years and was looking forward to update 2.10
    OK,As an early user I get a pass to Connect tier, but seems it's to the cost of new users, one of which would be myself if I buy a Rem2. Sad news. Bad moves. Ask Icarus.

    This smells of a private equity firm trying to turn a profit before an IPO. Honestly if they tiered the subscription to include the device with a 2 yr contract or something including the device they could make more money over time rather than raise the price for everything and kill the greatest tablet ever. Don't charge for the features charge for the device and at a certain point the device has to be upgraded like iPhone and Android. Can't upgrade unless you have x phone. They took what could be something incredible and turned it into a brick. China makes it so it will soon be available for wholesale and there's enough of us Unix developers out there to make it a better product.

    I don't think they tried pushing with the limitations trying to find when the loyal fan-base will protest.
    Let's remember the people who really love the device are the people who already bought it and they won't pay a dime for the subscribtion. What I really think is a shot in the foot is that as an owner I go around and I could recommend this device to people. Now, after this bogus with the subscribtions, I will probably tell people to buying a different product.
    What I think may be the reason for all this (and god hope I'm not right) are financial problems of the company. They want to ensure more regular money income with something that will probably drive people away from buying the device, because as you say the competition is far away from these models.
    Let's hope that they'll see this video and see the probable decrease in sales and come up with a new strategy.

      Exactly my thoughts. If they had a monopoly you could argue it's just greed but that isn't the case. Plenty of cheaper competition already, so my only explanation is that they must be so cash-strapped that they saw this predictably unpopular move to subscription as their only option to increase revenue to survive.
