    You kill me!!! I have a powermate 7200/5750 I got after Katrina. It's worked well in the past but I've neglected it. Today I drained fuel and it came out barf yellow. I shot some carb cleaner in where the fuel line connected, alas - it won't crank. I'm 74 and pulling that line - whew what a stress test. You are so calm and matter of fact. If I opened that carb that would be the end of that sucker! Thanks for some ideas. And the cord makes a terrible sound pulling it. I've got a nice 5 yr old Champion, smaller, but I got that cleaned and it ran a 1500w load an hour nicely. Change the oil and I'm ready for winter. Thanks for a relaxing and informative video.

    I continued with my cleanup of a Tecumseh 11hp. That fuel I had yellow, I just thought I cleaned the tank. I had to take it off and swush it clean. Got that cleaned. I did open the carb and it was full of yellow mess fuel, carb cleaner to all that. Took the float off, got carb cleaner blowing out all the holes. Oil, it was black yuck, drained and new oil. Oh yeh, just in case, a new plug. So I've exceeded myself and fresh gas. I pulled it some 10 times and it roared!!! Yyeeaaa. For some 6 seconds. No bad smoke. Just roared and ran, and friend - that was it. I've pulled, and choked, and choke off, and can't think of anything else. Fuel would drain at the carb easily so no blockage. I'm tired, but thanks for the example, the thoughts, and good video. And the fuel comes out at the carb line as clean as it goes in. I have a new champion 8750 open frame due in a week.

I have the exact same generator as this one except mine is brand new that i have only used it for a grand total of half an hour before the power came back on about 7 years ago! It's been sitting in my garage all this time. I replaced the oil and gas and I finally got it to start by adding a teaspoon of gas into the spark plug hole. The unit started but it will only stay on for at most 10 seconds. Of course the plug is brand new and the filter is clean and i don't expect the carburetor to be dirty because it has never been used. Based on your abundance of knowledge, what do you think is wrong and what should i do? I am mechanically challenged.

      @jcondon1  Před 3 lety

      Have not tried that myself. If the engine has a location for the starter to bolt on, then it is possible. Would need a ring gear for the flywheel, the starter, starter solenoid like found in a tractor, wires, battery and a switch for the solenoid. Also there is no charging system, so would need a battery tentder to keep it topped off. All together I would probably cost around $150 to complete. Personally would look to buy a used generator with a starter and sell the one without the starter.

    Two comments. The first is trivial. The K on the cardboard gasket is probably the symbol that the food packed in that box was Kosher.
    More importantly one thing I don't see you do when you are testing a generator is to either use a GFI tester on the the GFI outlets or at a minimum use your multimeter to confirm that ground and neutral are bonded on the generator.
    If someone if going to use a generator to power their entire home using a transfer switch that doesn't switch both the Hot and Neutral then the NEC requires that the bond and neutral bond be broken on the generator. If the connection is broken then the GFI outlets will not work as designed. You are supposed to label it on the generator that the bond has been broken.
    It is possible to power up a house with a relatively small portable generator so some day you may end up with a generator that has been modified to comply with code to work correctly when using a transfer switch or interlock with unsafe GFI outlets.

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  Před 3 lety

      Most generators are bonded between neutral and ground. Some have a floating neutral. The gfci though will still work since it’s looking for power on the outlet side returning on the ground.

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  Před 3 lety

      Most likely there is still something restricting the fuel flow in that carburetor. Another possibility is that the gasket between the carburetor and engine is leaking. You also may want to consider adding a heat shield between the exhaust and stator. For some reason that is missing on this model. Eventually the stator will burn up because of it.

I also disconnected the orange wire going to the oil sensor to see if it was a bad sensor. I have sprayed into the carb and I can't get it to turn over at all. • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  Před 2 lety

      Do you feel compression? When pulling the engine slowly, it should stop advancing on the compression stroke unless you pull harder. If good, then would check the spark plug gap. If too large then it will not jump the gap under compression. Also could be a bad plug or a weak coil. If you have compression then you should be getting something when spraying into the carb. My money would be on an ignition problem if you have good compression. The only other thing would be timing, but that is rarely a problem with generators.

    Hi,
    I came across your video on this model generator. I was given the same one but it was stored indoor garage so it's in great condition outside. The only problem is they left the gas which gummed up the carb and the gas tank was very dirty inside. The gas cap seal broke down and feel inside the gas tank. I just used a vacuum cleaner to suck out the oil gas and loss junk. There was even a gas can nose funnel inside, LOL...
    I will change the spark plug, clean carb and change the oil. Also this generator was missing the foam air filter. Where can i get a new one?
    Also how should i go about cleaning out the gas tank. I think they had a fuel stabilizer but no one changed it for years. The gas was red in color.
    Any info would be great.
    Thanks

      Michael C you can order the filter from amazon Spree air filter compatible replacement for Subaru Robin EX27 EX30 air filter element www.amazon.com/dp/B07FDFCPVH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_tdKPEbBMKFRF1

      For cleaning the tank, you should remove it and wash it out with water. I then use a grabber tool OEM 25291 24-Inch Four Claw Pick Up Tool www.amazon.com/dp/B000CMFK0Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ofKPEb3VC7R81 with a rag to dry it. It also work well for removing foreign objects from the tank. You can also just leave the tank in the sun to dry. Once dry I usually put a little gas in shake it around and use the grabber tool and rages to dry it again. Just want to make sure all the water is out.

      James, thank you so much for the info. Again, the generator is really in great shape outside. The gas and carb is really the big issue. Oh yeah, and the air filter. I will get from amazon.
      You save me a lot of with your video

      Also I have worked on 3 of those generators over the years. 2 had bad stators. There is no heat shield between the muffler and stator which might be the cause. I am working on one now. Just replaced the stator. Going to try and install a heat shield from a Husky HU5000 part 638539002 which I think will fit. Will share that video link. It is a two part video neither has been released. Part 1 is troubleshooting no power. Will share part 2 which is replacing the stator and near the end I show the husky hu5000 heat shield. The video is not complete. Waiting on the heat shield. Also it is a husky not a Powermate, but from what I can tell they are almost the same.

      At 26:40 I talk a little about the heat shield. This link will probably only work for a week or so. I plan on publishing this I about 3 weeks completed with the heat shield if the parts shows. czcams.com/video/V-6LqRCDE7k/video.html

      This video might help. Different generator model, but same engine. Make sure the throttle plate is not stuck and you can close it all the way. czcams.com/video/xlsTJcJxTqw/video.html

      @jcondon1  Před 4 lety

      There should be an engine number on a white sticker that starts with EX30 (usually on the side of the blower housing). Once you have that, you can google and find the parts diagram.

      It is a common with these generator. They have no heat shield between the muffler and the stator. Just did a video on this recently czcams.com/video/4PpQ2Liatzw/video.html
