A huge thank you to @Kwstas_Vagias for all the help!
Additionally, thank you for "forcing" me to watch this performance to @ralphmellor1909, @peteroberst117, @maiklbonin5145, @atwowheelguy, @Craigregister000, @ronnie241259, @Alexander-savoshenko, @peterhowells7309, @valaivanov6843, @DianaRussia531, @johnterry1852, @alexnicholas5079, and @encrypter46
Some of my favorite Diana fans are in that group. She has a decent, nice fan base for the most part.
14 years old, but as great a performance of anything, by anyone, as you will ever see.
Одна из лучших песен из золотого фонда выступлений Дианы!!! Сегодня ей исполнился 21 год!!! Поздравляем!!!
Фантастическое исполнение песни Дианой!
Диане - браво, а за реакцию - лайк!
Fantastic performance of the song by Diana!
Bravo to Diana, and like for the reaction!
31.05.24 happy birthday Diana Ankudinova🎉you are gorgeous and beautiful❤😍😇
Я человек простой - вижу Диану - ставлю лайк
😂 I hope you liked my reaction too. 😉
Thank you so much for your comment! I keep forgetting to say it, but yes, she has a great stage presence and a sense of drama. This song is far from easy and she makes it magical.
This is definitely a masterpiece from Diana Ankudinova!
Благодарю вас за вашу реакцию, с глубочайшим к вам уважением. Мир вашему дому 🙏

И даже по этим исполнениям, -

Диана великолепна !!!❤❤❤ Спасибо !😊

You are the only reactor I know who has the nous to recognise how this performance must have been predicated on Diana's own early biography.
The resources Diana must have drawn on to so compellingly sing the song of the orphan bride when she, herself, had been rescued from an ophanage!
We dont need to wonder where she found the pain that she expresses here. The wonder is how, for this world class performance, she found the raw talent and artistic bravery to face, transmute and transmit the dark experience of her young life.
Thank you! I am glad her fans shared her biography with me, so it would have been really hard to miss the connection. It is her strength in overcoming that and pouring it all into such a beautiful song and such a compelling performance that is a marvel.
Yes, that was her adoptive mother, Irina Ponik. Once again, I appreciate your reaction and thoughtful analysis of this performance!
Thank you so much! So wonderful to have such sweet people in the chat sections.
Diana is someone special isn't she? A pure gem amongst mediocre mainstream performers, a pearl in an ocean filled with plain, and overrated singers. Diana can sing everything, with a voice and sounds that stand out of what we usually hear. Rechenka is one of my favorite songs, another favorite is "Oh, it is not evening yet" another Russian folksong. Maybe someday ....... Again, greetings from the Netherlands.
Groetjes Nederland! ❤
I would like to thank the "mediocre mainstream performers" for prompting me with their average music to start this channel in the first place. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have to dig through the intricate web of the Internet in search of actual performers or ask for people to recommend them. 😁
"Oh, it is not evening yet" will happen, now you're the 4th person who requested it. 😉
@@AleksReacts Using the word "pas" when you wanted to comment on a section in the song, you gave away you're origine. Ik wens u een heel fijne dag en veel luisterplezier met Diana Ankudinova!
I had to listen to the video again to find what you meant. It was "pause" not "pas". No one is perfect. 😁
What origin would using the word "pas" be?
Спасибо за Диану посмотрите её выступление с песней кони привередливые
I have added your suggestion to the list. It will come up at some point. 😊
One of my favorites by her is from the "Show Mask Go On" entitled "Oh' It's Not Yet Evening" czcams.com/video/cfTiQkJrLi0/video.html. It's an over 300 year old folk song about a Cossack warrior who dreams of his death in an imminent battle. On Diana's face you see sadness, anxiety and pain of the soul of the Cossack warrior. One would swear she borrowed that soul to perform the song.
I'm not sure how many people appreciate the emotional gasps she produces here that absolutely melt me. And, yes, that was her stepmom.
Thank you, it's now been placed on the list. As you know, I'm going through the list slowly, but surely.
Thanks for reaction. Please react to Diana Ankudinova - Blizzard.

Meravigliosa Diana 😍😍😍
Wild, primitive, shamanic, essential nature, magical howls of a beautiful animal that lives in the forest and speaks with the river...
It fascinated me like no other Diana song.
I have been following her for a long time and, although she has done fantastic things with that deep and unique voice. (Expanding her vocal range), I prefer the performance and atmosphere of "Rechenca".

Thank you for your wonderful, insightful analysis. This is the performance, 6 years ago which led me to my addiction to Diana's voice and the her ability to portray such feelings so well on a stage.
Thank you for the wonderful comment! So far, everything I've seen by Diana has been outstanding and exceptional, but yes, this one in particular touches one's soul.
@@AleksReacts I have watched this performance of Diana's hundreds of times including countless reviews. It is only relatively recently that it has appeared with accurate subtitles. For many years I watched it without subtitles, most reviewers base their assessment purely on the impact of the performance, without the full understanding of the song, the majority still do. You have delved into the possible personal meaning for Diana. I have now watched your review several times, it has opened my eyes to the deeper impact of the song must have on Russian speakers. It has increased my addiction and left me emotionally drained. Thank you again
I have @Kwstas_Vagias to thank for doing the translation and allowing me to understand the song as much as possible. Thank you as well for truly watching the commentary and letting me know it's worth doing. ❤
Thank you so much! Well, my aim is not to react merely to the prowess of the artist, but also to the songs I'm hearing. So far, extraordinary artists tend to choose extraordinary songs or make them so.
Oh, cruelty, thy name is Evgeny (I guess, based on the handle). I've added both to the list of course.
Please be on the lookout for a poll or two in the Community section. The list is growing by a lot and some suggestions come from 5+ rather insistent people 😉, while others only come from 1 or 2. Those keep getting pushed down the list, so a poll will likely be my way of getting them back up with the help of the whole community.
Diana is a brilliant talent. This is a world class performance at the age of 14. At 5:48 you can see Diana's Mother Irina Ponik. Constantine @Kwstas_Vagias is a great resource for Diana's music that she hasn't uploaded or can't for various reasons. Try to find the unmasked version of California Dreaming she performed live on Russian TV. She performed one with her mask on and then when she was unmasked she sang it for an encore. I'd leave a link but my posts get wiped out immediately when I post links. I am sure I have it on one of my various Diana playlists...Constantine may have it uploaded. I don't remember. Anyway, enjoyed your video. I hear Diana's voice in my head all the time. I'm not sure why but her voice just sinks deep into my soul. :) 💐💐🌼🌼
@Kwstas_Vagias seems to be the first to actually do a proper translation of Rechenka (and add an explanation where possible). He also made good on this "threat" to send me everything Diana, so I'll be using a lot of the material he provided.

This is an old wedding ritual song, it's like a puzzle, it consists of phrases taken from ritual songs. Where it is sung in a whisper is like the words of a deceased mother, because in Russia since ancient times it was believed that the river is the border between the world of the living and the dead, as in the mythology of others countries. So the girl-orphan came to the river to tell the mother that she was being given away for the unloved, to a strange family, ask for blessings and cry.
Thank you so much for sharing more about the meaning of the song! So, in a way the river is a friend, or rather more than a friend - her mother and father reside there after death. I misunderstood it, but not completely thanks to the way the song is delivered.
It was clear that someone who isn't from Russia can never comprehend the full meaning. Even when explained, the feeling that accompanies the meaning will be at least somewhat off for us non-Russians. Every people has songs like that and they're usually old folk songs.
I missed something when I was doing the video and noticed it now that I published it.
@encrypter46 actually did explain it similarly to your comment, but I'm having trouble tracking everything I was told in the past month about each artist. A very fast learning curve you guys have put me on. 😊

The word "реченька" is usually applied to a small river near which a person grew up and has the warmest memories of it.
Ah, that's yet another interpretation, but all lead to the same conclusion - closeness & endearment.
Спасибо😍🥰

Hi! Overall, you got the meaning of the song right. Even native speakers of the Russian language will have different interpretations of this song, because there are many allegories in the text. A river is not necessarily a small river, it is an appeal as something native and animated, with whom you can share your sorrows and joys. And yes, Diana's foster mom flashed in the frame.
Thank you so much! I wanted to first focus on what I can hear and then check if I got it. I know it's close, not perfect, but the gist seems to have been portrayed really well by Diana.
@@AleksReacts One more point to understanding. The ancient ceremonial wedding songs (which were sung when preparing the bride for the wedding) were very sad and similar to the lamentations at the funeral service of the deceased. It was believed that a girl dies (symbolically) in order to be reborn into a married woman.
"Even native speakers of the Russian language will have different interpretations of this song" - knowledge of the Russian language has nothing to do with it. Most Russians have already forgotten and do not know the old peasant way of life in Russia, since they are city residents for the third or more generations. The meaning of songs of Russian folklore, especially ritual ones (wedding and others), is no longer known to them - hence the mass of incorrect and often downright stupid interpretations.
Oh, I know what it meant. Like many other nations, we've lost the true meaning and to today's listeners imperceptible nuances in many of our old folk songs.
Greetings from Moscow! Yes, Alex, you understood everything correctly and told it correctly. That lady with glasses has been Diana's foster mother since she was four years old. The river is not only a diminutive, but also the merging of the souls of the river and the girl. This is one of the components of the very mystery of the Russian soul. Alas, it is also the call of the river...
Thank you so much! Greetings to Moscow!
Hi! Rechenka - the affectionate name of the river.
не только уменьшительное, но и ласкательное
Thank you for the reaction.
Yes, this lady is Diana's adoptive mother, with whom she is very close.
The song performed by the original singer did not impress me as much as Diana's version.
A short video of Diana practicing yodel sounds. In fact, she learned to do this from about 11-12 years old.
czcams.com/users/shortsSACmoeS4aXo
Thank you so much! I assumed about the lady, but I'm glad to know that the assumption was correct. It's usually family behind the scene in talent shows, so that's where the assumption came from.
Not sure if she really needed to "learn" to do anything related to singing. She seems simply born with it. 😊
🥰🥰🥰
The river is a dividing line between the living and dead - she is appealing to the spirits of her ancestors to bless her wedding.

🎼✅It feels good to know you are getting to experience these unforgettable, spiritual, life changing performances. Isn't it extraordinary how she, as a 14 year old, picked _this_ song and performed it as if she was 140?
I was browsing your channel again, catching up with some reactions I had missed, and wondering where you might journey next.
What about Igor Krutoy? He is huge in the worlds of Dimash, Diana, and Lara.
About 15 years ago he joined artistic forces with Lara, and shepherded the relaunching of her career after the combination of her collision with Celine Dion and the personal tragedy documented by her song Broken Vow.
Around 2017 he connected with Diana, and helped mentor her through the extraordinary difficulties she was experiencing around 2018 due to her biological mother getting back in touch with her about 10 years after abandoning her. This had led her to say she wanted to quit singing altogether. Thankfully Igor took her under his wing (or rather let her fly free of her own accord, by buying her family a house, and paying for her music studies, as a gift, and then stepping completely away from her life so she could return to the kind of normalcy that lets a child develop their life in a healthy way).
(Diana's success in singing competitions had alerted her biological mother that she was valuable. Her biological mother then threatened to use the law to take Diana away from her adoptive family. Diana became so stressed she suffered vitiligo, which led to her not wanting to be seen in public. I believe that is why the lighting in her performances shifted a fair amount around that time, with Wicked Game, which I believe she performed and altered partially to express what was going on with her biological mother, involving make up and dark lighting to hide the patches breaking out over her face. Igor bought a house a thousand miles away so her biological mother lost touch with her.)
And then of course he connected with Dimash, also in 2018.
Curiously you haven't yet reacted to _any_ of Igor's songs, and while I'm not sure Diana has sung any of his songs, Lara and Dimash between them have performed a couple dozen of his songs. And while both Lara and Dimash have proven they are both superb composers (and the first couple songs Diana has penned are every bit as remarkable as Lara and Dimash's first few songs), there's no getting away from the fact that Igor is at another level better, with hundreds of masterpieces to his credit.
I say all of this because Igor Krutoy might be another related rich vein to mine. Maybe starting with Ti Amo Cosi, which is a truly wonderful little trio featuring Dimash, Lara, and Aida Garifullina, a world famous Soprano.
I also keep thinking about how you might react to Ren's art. He wrote and performed Patience nine years ago, after he'd been diagnosed with ME. I think Renegades will descend en masse if you react to him, and make it clear in the title that it's your first ever reaction to Ren. (It's actually surprisingly hard to do that both elegantly and unambiguously because so many reactors are trying to con viewers.) Maybe "Reacting to new (to me) artist Ren Gill" followed by whichever song you pick. My intuition is that "Patience" will bring them to your channel in droves precisely because it's one of his earliest "little" masterpieces and they'll get to squabble over which Ren art pieces they think you should react to next. (I say "art pieces" because the word "songs" doesn't really fit for about half of his pieces.)
Anyhow, please consider falling in love with Ren over the next year. Maybe sparks won't fly, but I think they will, and that you'll instantly get why, when he suddenly hit #1 in the album charts in the UK out of what people thought was nowhere, it was instead the case of a genius artist having been everywhere, to hell and back, to heaven and beyond, in his own way, never taking (recreational) drugs, just becoming one of the greatest artists alive today, constantly honing his craft, hoping he can stay alive to share his love with the whole planet, as he is at last beginning to manage. God bless him. (I say that because I respect the song Patience, not because I'm religious.)
Ren: Patience: 2016: czcams.com/video/284ugnS_ruQ/video.html
Peace and love from the UK. 🕊💚
(I got the Patience date wrong. The video was uploaded early 2015.)
BTW, while he was diagnosed with ME in 2011, doctors finally figured out in the last couple years that the underlying issue was Lyme disease from a tick bite. It should have been obvious -- he and 2 friends were all struck down by the same "mystery illness" in the same year, and apparently all of them had been together in some tall grass in the months before everything went nuts for them -- but suffice to say, Ren had to spend a decade in hell first. And to quote the UK NHS: "The sooner you start treatment, the better your chance of a full recovery."
I've had friends with Lyme disease. (I spent 15 years in Tennessee USA, with about half of that in the countryside, where ticks are a serious problem.) It's a disaster if it's not treated correctly early enough. And to quote the UK NHS: "The sooner you start treatment, the better your chance of a full recovery."
Dear Ralph, thank you so much for your amazing support and suggestions. Igor Krutoy sounds like a wonderful person based on everything you shared with me. It seems both you and @nicevinci_dear requested Olimpico, his song written for Dimash, and I do plan to get to that one. Of course, I've added Ti Amo Cosi to the list as well, but with the quantity suggested, I'll probably react to it a bit more down the lane. I'm trying hard not to watch everything people have suggested before I actually do a reaction - not an easy task, because I really loved almost all performances by Lara, Dimash and Diana (Dimash's Smoke was not exactly my favorite, but all the others are amazing)
As for Ren, I just put up your suggestion Ren's Back on 74 / Message In A Bottle to a poll in the Community section and currently Ren is leading. I may have to do this for some artists as some songs are requested by 5-10 people and others by 1-2, so I'm trying to prioritize with your help. Actually, a close friend asked me to take a look at Ren and he does have good taste in music, but I kept putting it off due to other requests.
I intentionally do not watch television, nor have I for the last 20+ years. Too much politics and terribly tasteless shows on TV, especially in my region. Therefore, I've definitely heard songs like Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen (which some people pretend not to have heard, which I think is impossible), but I am missing out on quite a lot of discoveries in these last 20 years or so. I am pretty glad I'm missing most of them. I hear them in passing or close to my home from clubs and bars and coffee shops and don't need to hear them ever again. However, some great ones don't come up in that setting.
More importantly, Ikanaide got my attention and made me realize that it's been a hugely popular song in Japan and everyone seems to know it, while I don't think anyone outside of Japan heard it before Dimash sang it. Now, that is something I'd love to explore - locally extremely well known music that's unlikely to have ever crossed the border. Probably some amazing stuff to be discovered that way.
@@AleksReacts "Smoke was not exactly my favorite" I just watched the official MV released a couple hours ago. Complex high production values mini-movie like most of his MVs. Makes more obvious the auto-biographical/allegorical aspects of the song. I loved it but won't recommend it.
"Igor Krutoy sounds like a wonderful person ..." He appears to be an admirable human, putting aside his musical art. But he's an amazing artist who has created a lot of musically and intellectually interesting material, including some songs that seem best in his hands (he has a wonderful voice) rather than sung by others.
"you and @nicevinci_dear requested Olimpico" I will be especially delighted if you pick the one on Igor's channel and, if you don't know Italian well, turn on subtitles and autotranslate so you can enjoy the heart and spirit of the lyrics (by a frequent collaborator who Dimash works with too).
"I intentionally do not watch television, nor have I for the last 20+ years". FWIW it's the same with me (since mid 2003, when I moved from Nashville, Tennessee, USA, to a rural valley an hour away from the city, far from the madding crowd, and even now I've moved back to the UK in an urban setting). And while I've dipped in and out of pop culture all my life, I ended up choosing to mostly stay away from social media starting around the turn of the century.
"I am missing out on quite a lot of discoveries in these last 20 years or so. I am pretty glad I'm missing most of them." Me too, but in 2022 I happened to follow a thread that led to Dimash, and then to "reactions", and that's led to discovering a new way of discovering music, which in turn is what led me Lara, Diana, Ren and rediscovering artists I had once listened to daily. I've disciplined myself to try keep my focus with you on a small handful because there are hundreds of artists I love, but that doesn't mean it makes sense to get into any of them yet given that you're not doing several reactions a day!
"Now, that is something I'd love to explore - locally extremely well known music that's unlikely to have ever crossed the border. Probably some amazing stuff to be discovered that way." Yes, that's a good focus. Ren fits that too; pretty much anyone in the UK paying proper attention to the nexus between pop culture and outstanding art has become aware of Ren in the last year or two.
No need to reply -- otherwise I might reply to your reply. ;)
YOU can always reply to my reply. It's always a pleasure to read your comments. The latest one, that huge compliment I just responded to, really touched me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
You are partly right about the diminutive suffix in the word rechen'ka. But this is only part of the meaning of this form of the word - it also carries an affectionate meaning. This cannot be translated unambiguously into English, so the translation option as “sweet river” is more or less suitable.
Thank you! I agree it's probably the closest translation to English possible. Of course, I wanted to check if there was more to the word and turns out everyone's saying "yes".
Дианка❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The song "Rechenka" (affectionate from the word "river") is a Russian folk ritual wedding song. There is a version that this song appeared before Christianity, and since early Christianity and paganism were closely intertwined, there are many versions of this song. It tells how an orphan girl comes to the river and prays to the spirits of nature. The song is about how my mother, father and brothers were killed by enemies, there is no one to take care of her. The river in Ancient Russia was considered the border between the world of the living and the dead. You hear an ominous whisper, it's the spirit of her late mother responding to the girl's crying.
There are about 30 variants of this song, but the content of each of the variants is based on the sad appeals of the orphan bride to her deceased parents, asking them for "blessings" and help for marriage, for family, to strangers.
There are other versions of this song, where the heroine appeals to her brothers and even to her parents with a call to return to earth in the form of a bird to her native home.
At the end of the song, the girl sails away to a strange tribe, to a strange family.
The roots of the song go back to ancient Russia, it is a very, very ancient folk folklore.
Thank you! Now I understand why the explanations are varied, yet similar to one another. We have songs like that too.
I did feel that "Rechenka" is similar to the word we'd use in its affectionate form "Rečica" (diminutive from the word "Reka"). I mean the translation isn't wrong, but it didn't sound complete, in my language it carries multiple connotations (sweet, loved, my, small, etc.). I'm only guessing due to both our languages being Slavic, that it's similar in Russian.
Also, the river being the border between the world of the living and the dead is present in many cultures, but funny it didn't occur to me at all while listening to the song. Makes absolute sense, given the lyrics.
In Greek we also have a word for the diminutive of the word river, but there is no such thing in English and the translation "little river" misses the affection on which the girl addresses the river with so I went with sweet river.
Yes, that is exactly what I noticed - there is much more to it than just "sweet" or "little" river, but there just isn't a way to say it in English.
@@AleksReacts There is a usage in Welsh with similar, if not exact, connotations with the word "bach", the English translation would be "small" or "little". For instance, the phrase "Bachgen bach" would literally be translated as "small boy", however its meaning is more like "good friend".
@@Kwstas_Vagias It's not even a lack of tenderness. The main thing is that this name animates an inanimate object. And the river becomes a friend, a mother, or something close and dear.
Clarification about the song: This is a Russian wedding song (from the bride's side), its lyrics cannot be taken literally, as these are ritual, formal phrases established over many centuries of their use. The Russian wedding ceremony for the bride’s side was always accompanied by plaintive and sad songs - after all, the girl was leaving her family forever for someone else’s family, that is, symbolically “dying” for her relatives. Hence the very genre of wedding songs of the bride and her bridesmaids was called “weepings or laments,” and the symbolism of “dying” and farewell was expressed by the image of a river, which among all Indo-European peoples was considered the border between the world of the living and the dead. Therefore, it was especially often used in a separate subgenre of wedding songs - when the bride was an orphan and therefore no one could bless her for marriage (a mandatory action in both pagan and Christian times). Therefore, she approaches the river and song this ritual song, calling on the spirits of her family.
Thank you! Each explanation brings a little something new.

It's a ritual song. A kind of conversion. It is accepted that parents bless marriage. But an orphan has no parents, and therefore she can receive a blessing from one of the forces of nature. In this case, by the river. And then another meaning appears. The river symbolized human destiny. It starts with a small stream, grows, and then flows into the sea, where all the rivers flow. Hence, it was believed that with the help of the river, you can appeal to the dead. To ask for their blessing. Well, or he will turn to death itself, as to the one who left the bride an orphan.
This definition of a river is a bit in tune with the floating lantern festivals in the Far East. Therefore, choosing a river to bless a marriage is not an easy choice. A very serious choice.
A lot of horses does not necessarily mean a rich groom. Because the wedding was an event for the whole village. Rather, it is a reference to the fear of death.
Oh, no one mentioned a lot of horses meaning the fear of death. Where does that stem from? Why are horses specifically associated with death?
Древний текст, древняя мелодия, дохристианские взаимоотношения. Только Диана настоящая. Истинная. Талантливая.
