In this week’s episode of Tying Tuesdays, watch as Max Pavel ties the Duracell!
This fly is worth having a selection of different sizes in your box. Created by Craig McDonald the fly packs a punch. On the jig, this fly snags up less and plummets into the fish feeding zone quickly. Wet or dry this fly is super buggy. Try fishing it off a tag under an indicator, on your euro set up, or as the bottom fly in your nymph rig. The UV brown ice dub has a great look and needs to be at your bench to incorporate other fly patterns. This is a fairly simple fly and gets the job done often.

I fish this with a power bait salmon egg (yellow garlic) tied on below for stocked trout. They love it that way, one day i caught 30 out of a hole when the guys who were with me got skunked. Great fly, great tutorial.

I tie a variation. forming a small butt with two or three turns of the red ribbing wire before forming the rib. For the collar in front of the CDC, rather than using the same UV Brown Ice Dub as the body, I use red Spectra Dub.

Hey Max! Great tie there, & I love those material description pop-ups. What is the size range for this fly? Thanks for sharing!

Great question, I would tie this fly anywhere from a size 12 to an 18!

Yes, this is a great pattern. You can also tie some in different colors!

curious as to why not just tie in the cdc as a normal hackle,Ian

Great question! You certainly can do that, we just wanted to showcase another effective method for tying in a CDC collar. Splitting the thread helps to not build up too much bulk and gives a nice flare to the collar when you spin it similar to a dubbing loop!

Bead will make hook pop out. Lol

This is true. Especially when fishing barbless, it is possible for the fish to shake the fly out of their mouth if you allow too much slack. Their ability to gain leverage is affected by how much you weighted your fly. Think of how far you can throw a handful of feathers versus how far you can throw a rock… When you oversize your bead, you are giving the fish more leverage to work the fly out of their mouth, so be prepared to maintain proper tension and rod angle to keep those barbless hooks seated.

I know, I had to turn it off when I heard that. The things fly anglers come up with!
