How do I cut a single straight line? I want to cut some things in half. If I vectorize it will cut a 2 dimensional shape, x axis and y axis. If i dont vectorize, it will cut side to side with a big kerf. Currently I have to import a rectangle, vectorize, and stop the burn after it's done the first line.
Is there a way to just cut a single straight line?

    • @MiddleRoomWorkshop
      @MiddleRoomWorkshop  Před rokem

Hi, Restore Technique; thank you for your comment.
What software do you use for the vector? If you use Inkscape, draw a line in the direction you want using the Draw Bezier Curves and Straight Line tool, save the file and open it directly in LaserGRBL. LaserGRBL can read .svg as long as the drawings are paths. Once you open the file LaserGRBL will prompt you to set the speed and the power.
      czcams.com/video/ufGtD3_NnFM/video.html
Otherwise, for such a simple task, you can write a simple gcode:
Open a new notepad and write:
      G90
      M03 Sval
      G01 Xval Yval Fval
      M02
Replace the val with the actual value; your laser's power goes where S is and corresponds to the power you want time 10.
for example, say you want to cut a 250mm vertical straight line.
      G90
      M03 S900
      G01 X0 Y250 F200
      M02
The above will run your laser with 90% power at 200mm/min.
Save the file in .nc format and open it with LaserGRBL. Here jog to set your custom origin, frame to check all is good and run.
      Let me know.
      Ciao and Happy New Year

Hi there what are the best setting for neje master 2 40w to engrave on the wood 3 mm deep with out burning it too much because every time I try it burns my engraving area more then it should witch takes away real color of the wood

    • @MiddleRoomWorkshop
      @MiddleRoomWorkshop  Před 2 lety

Hello Shebibawa asadbawa, thank you for your comment.
That is deep engraving and honestly engraving so deep especially if it is scanning type will make lots of smoke and burn the surrounding. In my experience with and testing power above 70% and speeds below 800mm/min will create a big mess (see my testing with the 40W module here czcams.com/video/xSMcPFV5DGY/video.html) So far between 60% and 70% power with a speed of about 1000 to 1200 mm/min produces the best engraving effect with not much discolouring, but not as deep as you wish to go.
The things that I could suggest is to reduce the fill quality or the lines/mm if you are using LaserGRBL (increase the interval if you are using Lightburn) this with some tradeoff will make cleaner jobs, also air assist will help a lot in reducing the burning around, but if you do not have one just put a blower or a fan blowing across the laser while it engraves.
If the Engraving is a gcode type, meaning outlines then you can try with some masking tape in the are to engrave which you will then remove once the job is completed.
      I hope it helps.
      Ciao

Question - possibly one of those questions too stupid for anyone to answer: How do you tell it which preset from the material database you want to run? This video doesn't show that, and I've scoured the internet and dug through every menu trying to find that, not finding anything. How do you select say "Hardwood - cut" or "leather - engrave"?

Hello JUJU CATTYS, thank you for your comment.
I can plan a video for mirror engraving but it won't be uploaded soon.
I have an entire series on LaserGRBL tutorial (czcams.com/video/8PhKyZipE9E/video.html) showing how to work with the software, but I think the problem here is to actually set up the mirror for engraving (czcams.com/video/sbg4ei4eBr4/video.html).
You should engrave the mirror upside down, i.e. the reflective side facing down and to engrave your project mirrored, that means flipped about its vertical axis.
This should ensure success, but take a precaution to protect the working space because once the laser makes it through the reflective layer (which should be upside down) will burn the next absorbing surface, so if you place the glass onto a table, the table may get burned.
Let me know how it goes?

    • @MiddleRoomWorkshop
      @MiddleRoomWorkshop  Před rokem +2

Hi, Nenad Lelek; thank you for your comment.
The laser height depends on the laser module you are using and the material's thickness if you are cutting.
The simple way to find the height is with a ramp test which I cover in an old video here:

    • @MiddleRoomWorkshop
      @MiddleRoomWorkshop  Před 2 lety

Hello Tomasz, thank you for your comment.
That is interesting, in a laser machine you can use either M03 or M04 where M03 stands for constant power, while the M04 stands for dynamic power.
In my experience and knowledge, older machines do not recognize M04 but all of them should work with M03.
Can you tell me which software are you using to generate your Gcode, and have you seen the Gcode itself?
If you are using JTP extension with Inkscape then you are prompted to choose between M03 and M04 so you could try the latter, but I believe the issue is the power settings, try to open the exported Gcode with the notepad and check if next to M03 you have S followed by some number (e.g., M03 S55).
If you import an image instead laserGRBL will ask you which command to use and so you can try both.
From there we can debug further.
      Let me know.

      @MiddleRoomWorkshop  Před 3 lety +1

Hello Josemarti Rodriguez, thank you for your comment.
I believe there is not driver difference within the NEJE 2S and the 2S Plus, therefore the software seems not willing to compile the job. I can suggest you to try with another G-Code format.
Have you tried to use the J Tech Photonics Extension on Inkscape? If you haven't I have a video for that czcams.com/video/dHGqdWA6-F4/video.html you can try to export your project with this extension which will produce a .gcode file that work also without problems.

Hello David, thank you for your comment.
If the machine does connect to the native software from neje, then try on switching the port on the top left corner where it said COM before clicking connect. Another thing, to connect with any software, you need to make sure that other software are correctly closed. You can check if the NEJE Application is running in the background looking at the Task Manager.

    • @MiddleRoomWorkshop
      @MiddleRoomWorkshop  Před rokem

Hi, Paul PRS; thank you for your comment.
I am not sure to understand it. When you click on the frame the machine should go through the four corners of the bounding box enveloping your project.
So, taking as an example a random shape, the software will evaluate the lowest-most, upper-most, left-most and right-most points and make respective horizontal and vertical lines which will create a rectangle, aka bounding box. The framing command will tell the machine to frame that rectangle starting, for example, from the lower-left corner counterclockwise or clockwise to the lower-right, upper-right, upper-left and back to the lower-left.
The software cannot trace the outline of the project, although that would be great.
Let me know exactly what you are experiencing.

Hi Vic's DIY projects; thank you for your comment.
Engraving glass is not easy, and you need a trick for it; below, you can see two of my videos showing you how to do that.
      As for the power
I normally use a NEJE A40640 Laser Module with an output power of about 10W, and the settings are as follows:
      Power 90%, Speed 500mm/min, Line spacing 0.12mm
With my Aufero LU2-4-SF and other 5.5w laser modules, I achieve similar results with:
      Power 95%, Speed 400mm/min, Line spacing 0.12mm
You should go to the second set of parameters in your specific case.
The important is that you are in focus.

Hello Bianca Vezelici, thank you for your comment.
Manufacturers usually provide some indicative sheets which you can get the parameters from, but the best way is to test, each material has many variations, and you might get a different thermal response.
If you tell me what material and thickness you trying to score (I guess you mean engrave) I may give you some numbers.

Hello Eman Mohammed Ali, thank you for your comment.
I am not sure to understand your question. If you refer to the snippet of G-code that the "frame" button generates, that depends on where the local and global reference system is in your project, i.e. x and y values can vary. When you click the button the software takes the module to the custom reference system, then it throws bunch of linear interpolation G1 that will outline the project.

What series are you facing the issue with? 2 or 3?
Does the machine move when attempting to home?
Have you tried any other software?
As the first thing, I would suggest updating the driver, which can be found at Neje's Wiki Site wiki.nejetool.com/doku.php
If this does not work, try reinstalling the software altogether.
If the problem persists we need to dig dipper into the issue.

Note, set the passes to 1 in the JTP extension if you want to set the passes within LaserGRBL Software

The material you can engrave does not depend on the software but on your Machine, specifically the Laser Module that comes with it.

Lasergrbl doesn't do portraits on my cnc-3018pro as you stated. Everything I tried failed to produce a decent portait.

Hello jwwilson1961; thank you for your feedback.
I am sorry to hear that. I thought you were asking for a typical desktop Laser Engraver, in particular NEJE, not for a CNC.
Do you have a Laser Mounted into your 3018pro i.e., are you trying to laser engrave? If so, we need to ensure that the GRBL configuration is correctly set?
Can you tell me what exactly does not produce a decent portrait? After manipulating your image, do you see the approximate output in your canvas? Is the engraving too dark or light?
I can try to troubleshoot if you are more precise with the issue you are running into.
      Ciao

@@MiddleRoomWorkshop I used Inkscape to provide a greyscale image of my brother who hobbies with me. The Raster image shows a good image. If I do line to line or with dots, horizontal, vertical, or diagonally the image is always to dark or to light. I cannot make out the texture of the hair and never make out the facial characteristics.
I just purchased the NEJE 3 MAX . I returned the Universal engraver 15000 40" x 40" unit . It never worked when it arrived from their warehouse in New York and still to this day have not sent a replacement laser for the one that never worked. I'm practicing on the NEJE 3 Max and their program. I have yet to try a portrait on wood. I still have to mount the unit to a piece of wood as it does move. I tried a portrait on a piece of cardboard. Poor choice to burn with movement as well. If this was chemistry I wouldn't have a problem. This is new to me but it will be a great addition to our Shapeoko 3 cnc router.
      Thank you for your reply.

Hello jwwilson1961, thank you for your feedback.
It seems the issue is related to the file setup.
Too dark or light may be the power setting given for the engraving; if you are using the NEJE desktop up, unfortunately, it is very limited and uses a different engraving approach; I would recommend you use LaserGRBL so we can have more control over the image.
In LaserGRBL, once you load the image, which does not need to be preprocessed i.e., you can load it in the software directly, once loaded and setting up the parameters, if you use LineToLine tracing, be aware that your laser must support laser modulation (which I believe it does) try to check if PWM is active in the settings GRBL > Settings > Raster import > "Support PWM", also when loading the image at the "Targett Image" Window (the last one) under Laser Mode select M4.
Additionally, since you are facing the issue with the diether option, check that the size is reasonable for the quality of the image you are loading; you can check "auto" under "image size and position" in the "Target Image" window and pull the data from the file using the EXIF button, then accordingly the quality or Line per mm must be reasonable, most lasers produce a spot of about 0.1mm in the vertical direction, therefore do not use more than 10line/mm.
As per material, the use of line to line tracing implies power modulation as mention earlier, therefore you need a material that has a good linear thermal response to the heat. Cartoon is not very good at it. I normally use Diether or another kind of algorithms based dithering which respond well with any materials.
Let me know if it helped.

Did you say that portraits can be loaded directly to Lasergrbl? You don't have to prepare them first in Inkscape or other programs?

Hi, @elizabethfurlong1902; thank you for your comment.
Unfortunately, LaserGRBL does not have a built-in designing tool, not even for simple text.
For a text, you need to design it in some vector software like Inkscape, then either export a png and work it as png, or convert it into a path and either import the file as SVG, but is only for the outline or convert it into a Gcode with some plugin.

Hi, Pedro Sacchetti; thank you for your comment.
The difference between engraving and cutting is in the parameters you set on the exporting page.
If you need to cut, you'll need to use a high value of power and a low value of speed, say 80 or 90% power and 200 or 250mm/min speed.
It is not an option that you can select.
      I hope it helps

There is no cutting in the video. Only engraving... Why does nobody do a proper video on a cutting workflow ?

This is a quite old video discussing the workflow, I have a newer video showing the engraving and cutting.

Hi, Ron D; thank you for your comment.
There is no difference between cutting and engraving from the software standpoint; it all depends on the power and speed settings you set for your machine.
The higher the power and lower the speed the deeper you go.
      I hope it helps
