I am very impressed with the young man who was in the rescue swimmer course. 21! Bless his heart - he knew his physical aspect was solid but not the mental; being able to identify that and be fine with walking away is impressive. You will go far, young man. I'm glad to be part of your experience!

I've encountered this in the fire department. You need to be 100% or you'll let yourself, team, and victims down. When I interviewed for the US Marshals they said the same thing. They actually said at the beginning of the session that, at any time, if people felt it wasn't for them (explaining the job, dangers, showing training, etc) then they weren't just okay with them leaving, they commended it. Forcing yourself to do that job does nobody a favor. Knowing your limitations is more important than pride.

@joemullen3863 agreed. The way our soldiers coming home from Vietnam were treated was despicable. My dad was cussed and called names. So called friends no longer spoke to him. He lost his spot in college. It was plain despicable. And the real messed up thing is many of them didn't choose to go, they were drafted and had to go. He was a Sunday school teacher, school and Church bus driver, never drank or smoked, much less drugs, came back a cursing angry alcoholic who dabbled in drugs and stopped going to church and had to abandon his goal of being an architect. And all that is not even mentioning the poisoning that was done to many of them and the lingering medical issues. Anytime I see a Vietnam vet I tell them welcome home as well!

Huh, he said the water was about 40 degrees. When I was in the USCG in the northern Atlantic the water was about 51 degrees. On the West Coast it was about 68 degrees. We were told that life expectancy in the Atlantic was about 5 minutes (depending on your age and physical fitness) if you didn't have a survival suit on. That's because you''re coming down from 98.6 degrees pretty quick. Your body goes into shock. I can only imagine your life expectancy at 40 degrees. But you've got to be careful of people you're getting out of the water. They'll grab onto you anywhere they can lay a hand or actually start fighting you, punching. We were taught if we couldn't stop them and they were putting us both in danger to knock them out! Maybe that wasn't the "official" policy but we all talked about it.

I feel like I can kind of relate with Culver. It's not easy to admit when you're not mentally built or ready for something you had your heart set on. I deal with a lot of guilt and shame, but I wasn't cut out for the job. In the end it's about the good of the team and the people you're trying to save. If you know you're not cut out for something, you may be saving lives and the team by recognizing your strengths and weaknesses and being strong enough to admit it's not for you.... Culver did good. He tried his best and learned something about himself in the process. It doesn't need to be a mark of shame, instead he can be proud of himself that he had the strength and presence of mind to walk away for the sake of others. Well done.

I know people who have passed away from boating accidents in Alaska, the coast Guard really has to regularly risk their lives. Alaska is incredibly beautiful, but boy she is MIGHTY and if you dont respect nature at all times, you very well may lose your life.

26:47 chief is out of shape and definitely couldn’t do the very things he’s asking of the newbies. Lol.
The members of the coast guard are truly angels, but seems like they all get so chunky.

It's easy to forget how dangerous a fourteen year old boy can be. Such a creature may indeed have had most of his growth spurt and thereby be the size of a man. He is in that trasition between being a boy and a man and has some of the abilities of both. In this case, the boy overwhelmed the man and he was not having that basket hoist. Fortunately, there was a man tried and true there to dissuade him from being stubborn and get him in the basket and rescued. I find myself wondering what limits that swimmer has set on him when rescuing.

This may be a silly question, but when they are hoisting from a fishing vessel, why wouldn’t the fishing vessel stop? They keep going and the helicopter has to keep pace. Is it because it’s smoother on board than bobbing on the waves?

I was there in Kodiak, left in 1992, that hangar in this video looks, pretty much same as then. They were just getting their '60s when transferred (durn USCG Wouldn't let me stay). That gate shack as the CO drove onto base looked different. Couldn't tell about other changes from when I was last there.

There are people in this world who either give or take. The givers walk into a room and they, believe it or not, give. They make that room brighter by offering it any type of succor that it requires. They help people when they need it. They are an ear that listens. A voice that gives advice. Or they are just simply able to share the weight of burden. They offer compassion, sympathy, a rosey smile that lifts you up. They inspire. The takers are the opposite. They are vampires who bring with them shadow. They suck from people. Drain energy from them. They seek sympathy, but are incapable of giving it. They wish to blame all their self-created ills on anyone they can pin them on, any excuse, any reason why they’re not where they supposedly deserve to be. They bring the people around them down. Their wives, their children, their work colleagues, their communities. All they want is to take and never give.
