I had the privilege of experiencing the presentation of the Bad album. Each new short film was an event. In the spring when Dirty Diana was released I was 15 years old, however the memories of having the song listened to a lot are from that summer. At that time the rock sound was not my thing, however it had such quality that then, as a child, I perceived that it was an elite song. Today, at 51 years old, it has become one of my favorite songs of all time.
Another masterful job, SWG! I appreciate how you used outtakes from the short film as your backdrop.
“Dirty Diana” is one of ‘Bad’s’ highlights because it plunges deeper into the nightmarish abyss of celebrity fandom like “Billie Jean.” When the titular groupie senses resistance from Michael (“My baby’s at home, she’s probably worried tonight…”), she sends a fatal blow to his girlfriend over the phone (“She said, ‘He’s not coming back because he’s sleeping with me!’”). Another classic case of “I can’t have you, nobody can.”
As the song intensifies, Michael unleashes a series of hair-raising screams, while longtime Billy Idol guitarist Steve Stevens delivers an electrifying solo. It’s like watching jagged lightning crackle across a blackened sky.
Yes, that's the dark side, being objectified/dehumanized, losing your freedom, never being able to trust anyone and always being surrounded by parasitic men and women, not to mention the pressure to be great all the time on command.
What's worse is that fame can NEVER be reversed, people can always get rid of their money if they've grown tired of the inability to trust and parasitic entourage that always comes with wealth, but they can never undo or walk away from fame and recognition to reclaim their freedom and anonymity.
