It may seem counterintuitive, but comedy is often key to a serious story. As a writer, you need your audience to experience a range of emotions, no matter what your genre. Comic relief is a tried-and-true way of creating the varied emotional texture a compelling story needs. So how can you create this effect in your own stories? Jodie Houlston-Lau shares some tips for lightening the mood.

If you want to see comic relief in action, we highly recommend Trevor Noah's memoir, “Born A Crime.” In it, the comedian and Daily Show host recounts coming-of-age during South African apartheid with his trademark sense of humor. Download a free audiobook version: www.audible.com/ted-ed
ok
pretty weird to see pinned comment being posted before our own eyes
@Tommy Gaming 🅥 and a bot
Saw no comedy in that act.
I think the real crime is that Trevor Noah is part of comedy as a genre
this is just like:
when you watch horror with freinds it becomes a comedy movie

"When people are exposed to one emotion for too long, they become desensitized to it."
Many, many dramatic storytellers would benefit from this video.

Can't help thinking about this quote because of the video xD
I used to think my life was a comedy, but now I realize, I don't have a life.
sounds like something the joker would say.
I used to think I had to end my life, but now I realise it's already over

If you experience enough sadness then ur humor naturally evolves to make dark things provide u a little laugh of relieve.
Uhhhh madness???
No it's not. Sick of these zoomers thinking they are so profound and depressed for enjoying dark humour.
that explains why im laughing at fart reverb sfx, and lots of 21st century humor sounds.
This is just Chandler's way of saying ....."i use sarcasm as a tool to hide my pain"
Ykw thats true-
Scrubs, Bojack Horseman, Rick and Morty, they all do this very well. You become a lot more attached to a character when you can cry with them as well as laugh.

It's also important to not let a joke or comedic situations stay for too long, like emotions, people will get desensitized to it the longer it goes.
"THAT TITLE HAS A LOT OF ROASTING POTENTIAL" 🤣🤣🤣
I admire comedians and all those who have the gift of laughter🙂
Loveee the animation, and overall, the story, and the narration, and everything ❤💜🐳
Thank you lol I needed this because I have a habit of turning my suffering/trauma into jokes to make things better
Hey! "Born a Crime" was the first thought that came into my mind when I read the title. It's one of the best book I've read, comical and sad, do read it please.
As someone who’s entire life is sad this is extremely helpful. Thanks you guys!

People dont laugh at my jokes they laugh at my face
This is an idea I didn't even consider until now because I write serious or somber stuff, but I can try this
Whats the music you use for this episode?
Another good example of using humor to set up difficult subjects is “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.” For instance, the author wanted to demonstrate the randomness and mystique of our universe, so he introduces a civilization that builds a computer in an attempt to find “The Answer to Life, The Universe, and Everything.” On the day when the computer is finally prepared to reveal the answer, they host an enormous party celebrating their newfound omniscience. And then they all gather around to hear the computer reveal the answer. Which is... (say it with me)... 42. Everyone pauses as if the computer has mustered the capacity to tell some sort of cruel joke. When they ask what the computer what it means, it tells them, “All this time, you were looking for the answer. Did you really understand the question?”
Yes this is what I need...
Againnn, the topic and animation slapss! Botg works perfectly
On time as always
i didn't expect to see "the god of small things" reference here i love it
Great video 👍
Subverting expectations and comic relief are tools of writing but tools are only effective when used correctly.
A lot of modern movies disappoint their audience by "subverting expectations" and a lot of times jokes are inserted in inappropriate situations.
Best animation every time
Thank you
If you’re writing a story with a “class clown” as the main character, could you reverse the rolls by making the sidekick more serious? I’m thinking that doings so might both cause the main character to have some serious dialogue and make them joke about the conflict, revealing their emotions.
"Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die.” - Mel Brooks
I know the first story referenced in the opening is Slaughterhouse 5, and the third is Gilgamesh, but I can't figure out what the second one is!
Dude it is heaven like animation But I also liked the way of expressing the way good life hands off to Ted Ed ... Am I right everyone...
Almost every Wes Anderson movies are sad and funny. Especially The life aquatic with Steve Zissou... It's classified as a comedy, but also one of the most depressing movie I've ever watched. And this is the main reason I like his films because I think we need to see our life as a comedy, even in the most difficult times.
Glad you posted this because SNL needs some lessons
Just add "lol" at the end
Finally, a video for me.
Hey, TED-Ed can you tell the way water flows and why we always leave a sliver of water after drinking left in our glasses
Could this be used in a college essay for a serious topic or should I avoid this?
I finally understand why it is weirdly funny when mentioning someone dying as a joke
EXACTLY what I need to cope with my stress! :D
Humor is like the jazz of writing.
There was this spiderman cartoon I used to watch as a kid called "The ultimate spiderman" in which the main character (spidey) used to be funny without the need of sidekicks as in between of tense fight scenes he the time used to stop and he used to break the fourth wall by saying some punch lines.
(Yes I know that it was just a cartoon for kids and was made to be funny but still this might be used as another way of expressing comic relief and I don't really know if it's true or not.)
4:06 like in the forums by being polite in trying to tell someone they are being obtuse (or worst) without saying it as such. Some people just don't get the hint.

TED-Ed can you do A History On Trial Of Pancho Villa.
Just like reading, I had to go back several times to gain the meaning of the dialogue in this video. The imagery was distracting and the dialogue at times complex. That being said, I do appreciate the message and will indeed ensure any future storytelling I do plays on several emotions.
I cant tell if this is a positive comment or a negative one
@@f1shyspace Neither could Grammarly. It's constructive criticism. I suppose I could chalk it up to my lack of passion for literary things due to historical comprehension issues in school and in life.

Wow this is like the best ad for "Born A Crime" I can think of.
From now on, don't say TED-Ed, say TED-Ad!
Honestly. In most stories the Comic relief character usually undergoes the most development.

"It may seem counterintuitive, but comedy is often key to a serious story." - Taika Waititi, probably.
Ookeey- ppl who goes into a bar have some main reasons- very difficult traumas heartbreaks n various losses in life & some for just pure fun indeed. I cannot imagine a person who are in difficult time of their lives just dash into the quest, normally they seem a break/ relief before the end game.
