The Emergency as a ‘University of Democracy’ & Indira Gandhi as its unwitting founder-Chancellor

45 years ago today, Indira Gandhi imposed Emergency with the intention to crush the opposition's will, but ended up creating a credible, pan-national, pan-ideological cadre of new leaders. In episode 506 of ThePrint's #CutTheClutter, Shekhar Gupta uses Indian political history to explain how the Emergency ended up becoming a 'University of Democracy' and Mrs Gandhi’s jails became 'boot-camps' set for all her and her dynasty’s future adversaries.

I have lived through the infamous emergency of 1975-77. I was youthful and employed during that period. The police would disperse youngsters standing and chatting in the street corners or chat shops. That was the degree of enforcement during this police raj. Post 1977 election, soon after Janata Government assumed power, the squabbles started. Typically, the disputants would go to JP who, at that time was ailing, and was in Jaslok Hospital. The joke amongst journalists and public was that Indian democracy has three Houses: Loksabha, Rajyasabha and Jaslok Sabha!
People of present generation who are interested in knowing of the excesses committed during the infamous Emergency should read Janardhan Thakur's "All the Prime Minister's Men"

Gupta ji, I would like to hear your analysis of division of Andhra Pradesh by congress government. After emergency I believe this of the biggest blunders committed my congress. Not the division itself but the way it was done. It would great to hear your analysis on the congress mindset pre and post to division. I believe its has impacted the power position of congress at national level by loosing 40plus Lok sabha seats.

At the regional level there is nothing like Tamil Nadu who produced mass leaders -- Annadurai, Karunanithi, MGR and Jayalalitha through the heady combination of film and caste politics (read anti brahminism). The phenomenon is continuing as Rajanikanth and Kamal Hassan are knocking at the doorstep of power. This is unique to Tamil Nadu and to a certain extent Andhra Pradesh. Don’t forget that these filmy people are ruling Tamil Nadu since 1967! Often wondered why the hugely popular BOLLYWOOD icons don’t have a go at the hustings😳😌l

Shankarsinh Vagela started his political career with the Jana Sangh, which later evolved into the Janata Party. After Janata Party split into various factions, Vaghela became a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In 1996, he broke away from the BJP and formed the Rashtriya Janata Party. Thus during Emergency in 1976 he was part of Jana Sangh and only in 1997 he joined Indian National Congress.
You have forgot Vijay Rupani, Chief minister of my home state Gujarat. He was imprisoned for 11 months and was sent to the jails in Bhuj and Bhavnagar during the Emergency in 1976. Above all, Jana Sang and BJP’s tallest leader of Gujarat Chimanbhai Shukla was imprisoned for the maximum term of 19 months. This is not to criticize you but add my favourite leaders in that list. Thank You for reminding Emergency to this new whatsup university students. Nation needs more such articles from a person like you. Thanks.

Game of thrones/power is also the game of patience. Those who have not succeeded till now at bigger stage cannot be deemed as failure. Only winners have everything to lose. Time is a factor that cannot be ignored. Everything is determined by:
      1. Time
      2. Probability
Both are nasty to change frequently.

One can see many parallels between the conditions in India and the conditions that existed in the USSR prior to its disintegration.
    1. Demoralized and overwhelmed military led by incompetent Generals.
    2. Economy in doldrums.
    3. Extreme disharmony fueled by hate and bigotry.
    4. Incompetence and corruption at all levels of government.
    5. Independence movements in many parts of the country.
    6. Controlled media which lied, lied, and lied.
    7. Taliban on the offensive (in India, Taliban seem ready to assault)
    8. True leadership vacuum
    9. Widen differences between rich and poor
    10. Poverty bordering on criminality.
    11. Extremist political party in power.
    Adios Modios.

One of the names missed out in this video would be that of Pinarayi Vijayan. When emergency was declared, CPI-M stalwarts like EMS, AKG, VS Achuthanandan, etc were jailed. Pinarayi Vijayan was the the young MLA representing Koothupparamba who was beaten black and blue by the police. The powerful speech he made in the Kerala legislative assembly with his bloodstained shirt imprinted his name in the minds of every Keralite back then. The Congress were in alliance with CPI under the "United Front" while the CPI-M was in opposition. C Achuta Menon (CPI) was the CM and K Karunakaran (INC) the home minister. Compared to north India, Kerala didn't suffer much under Emergency and that's the reason why it re-elected Congress (this time Karunakaran as CM). It'd be wrong to say that police excesses didn't happen during the 21 month period in Kerala; Rajan murder is the most infamous case related to police brutality during Emergency. A brilliant movie named Piravi had been made depicting the helplessness Rajan's father had to endure during the period.
Another interesting fact related to Emergency I read is that, all through emergency Indira couldn't enter JNU (a Left bastion right from those times). Even after the loss in the 1977 elections, she held on to the post of chancellor of the university and it was only after a protest led by the then JNUSU President Sitaram Yechury that she resigned.

Gupta sir: Perhaps one day you can inform the public what actually happened during the Emergency? I was a young kid during those days but even I remember the atmosphere of fear, in Delhi, at that time. Better still, why don't you get one of the Nehru-Gandhi family members from Congress I to come & inform us all about what their uncle/brother-in-law Sanjay Gandhi did to the people of our country during those dark days? No, I'm not a BJP voter but fair's fair. The people of India have spoken & twice elected BJP. Congress I is just a lousy opposition party. Good government deserves & requires good opposition. Currently, there is no opposition at the Centre. The people of India demand a good opposition.
