Inside Detroit's Failing Public Schools

  • Detroit Public Schools are in crisis. Dropout rates are twice the national average, schools are routinely failing health inspections, and the district is more than three and a half billion dollars in debt. In this short video, Atlantic associate editor Alia Wong traces the history of Detroit Public Schools-from a model for urban education at the turn of the century to a failing, debt-ridden system today. How did the school district decline so dramatically?
This video is based on the report, A School District in Crisis: Detroit's Public Schools 1842-2015.

Detroit is NOT in anyway IMPROVING! The city is falling to rust all because nobody will take care of it. It’s sad, Detroit was a bustling city in the 20th century and now look where it is now. It is the saddest place I have ever been😔 I am a resident in Michigan and attend my local High School, I live in Metro Detroit and we have not a single problem with our schools. Detroit has extreme debt on their hands and I see no signs of them trying to pay it off😔 I have Three years of High School left and by the time I graduate, I think Detroit won’t be a city anymore. Just a shell of what it used to be.....So sad

99% of the problem is that when you let the students rule, intimidate, hit the teachers and come to school only when they feel like it and then your school board is on these poor students side, this is the end result, who wants to be a teacher in Detroit only to find out that the school board doesn't have the teachers safety to be their number 1 priority, then, this is what you end up with, a broken down terrible school system.

As a former high school teacher working in far east side Detroit City (Finney H.S.), it is very hard to see that the conditions of the majority of the schools are still deplorable. The funding which has been earmarked for the school improvement programs should be used for that particular purpose only! It is truly sad to see that administrators can not be trusted with public funds.
After all this is not about how I can get more money to be used for selfish gain at the tax payer's expense; it is or should be about how can I use these resources in order to improve the quality of my students educational & learning environment.

Detroit schools get 14,000 per student a year. Now imagine if you could decide where that 14,000 went. A teacher could teach 10 kids in her house and make 140,000 a year. If the teacher was bad you could just find another teacher. With that kind of pay there certainly would be no shortage. Now imagine having the same good teacher every year. That teacher would know your parents well and have a deep interest and bond with you. After imagining all of that why do we not have school choice in America? Why are these children forced to go to horrible schools when there is plenty of money already being paid to send them to a good private school?

The bane of public education today, is the lack of discipline enforcement, resistance to authority and the laxity of cellphone usage in the class. This is all generated by liberals running public schools and accentuated by too many lawyers trying to shake down a dollar. Teachers and ADM in public schools are afraid to enforce rules. They might be called racist or sued or fired for rule enforcement. The school student handbook used to be rules with consequences. Now just suggestions. Inflated grades are the just the results of the attitude that everyone should get a trophy. Knowledge means nothing anymore. The movie " Idiocracy" is exaggerated but possible. Makes one sick.

    • @trwent

Yeah, everything is the fault of the "liberals", isn't it? Never mind the fact that the same problems, if not worse, exist in ruby red states like Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, etc. Also, you Trumpsters always complain about the teachers' unions (unions in general, actually) being dominated by liberals. But how does that square with your BLAMING liberals for students getting away with assaulting teachers? Teachers' unions are for REMOVING violent students from classrooms; it is the conservative administrators who fight that, typically.

I went to 8 different schools in Detroit, to see them torn down is a disgrace. In comparison, Google the inner city Hamtramick and see the difference. Why? Because Blacks were told if you a Black Person, have trouble in Hamtramick don't call the police for help. As you enter that city you will see how Detroit use to be, orderly, clean, business as usual, so there can be only on conclusion as to why Detroit failed. There was NO police abuse that started the 67 riot, it was a bar that said we don't obey the rules about closing at 2 AM WE are BLACKS and we will do as we please. It started at Joy Road and 12th Street. They were not going to let White rules tell them what to do. In 50 years all of America will look like Detroit. Our factories are being closed and jobs exported out of our nation.. Wake up America, IF you don't elect an Independent Candidate this coming Nov. to Restore not Change America it's all over. WE have lost our way, and the Democrats only want our future to be The New World Order. It was good while it lasted, sorry but true. As your next President, I could save our nation, and put Americans back to work in American factories. Stop the New World Order, stop Agenda 21. Pray, that's all we have left.

I feel like you have the systematic racism that pushed black americans to less privileged areas in the late 40's, 50's, 60's, and 70's. Through this time, racism was still so prevalent that segregation and discrimination such as not hiring black citizens caused them to be forced to stay in these poorly funded and abused areas. Inner city schools where students are mainly black are abused by the system. They crank out kids who aren't educated the right way due to lack of funding and in return they have to get low paying jobs, stay in the poorly funded areas, and the cycle continues for their children. Racism is still long from gone sadly.
