  • I finally got my hands on an eCorder - a fully electronic recorder designed and built by Michael Shonle! I put this new instrument through its paces in terms of sounds, range, dynamics, response.... and it was so much fun!

Best analysis of this abomination I've read. I played in a recorder ensemble in college, and learning how to play bass recorder, to learn subtlety, and work with an ensemble, was to bring me back to when these instruments were viable 'band' sounds. This is just wrong, on so many levels. It's almost as bad as "Awful Tune" for singers.

You can buy an EWI (electric wind instrument) that plays like any woodwind (minus clarinet, recorder, and bassoon) with a customizable fingering system to your liking with an onboard synthesizer and midi control for under $800. The 5000 also has wireless capabilities, but it’s a bit more expensive than the USB (don’t buy it, not worth it) or the 4000s (totally worth it). Totally recommend for any wind player, really similar to the ecorder

An additional note about the eCorder. You said it sometimes produces an unwanted lingering note. This happens sometimes with MIDI wind controllers, which this is. The eCorder is equipped with a panic button, which in MIDI terms is an "all notes off" button which will instantly turn off any notes that are "hangovers". I don't have the instrument myself but I read about it in the on-line manual.

Hi Sarah, this e corder is awesome! It's a pity because it's too expensive for me, I was wondering if in the next e corder generation could make sounds like a saxophone tenor, soprano, orquestra sounds, trumpet, strings, violin, viola, cello, flute transversal, guitar, piano, piccolo, harmonica, melodica, organ, and other interesting sounds. What I understand is that this electronic recorder it has the capability to do some sound effects , and the bass, tenor, alto, soprano and sopranino recorders, which is amazing! We have already keyboard with a lot of different instrument sounds, electric pianos, electric accordions, electric phones that play as a guitar and piano, and now this e corder. Wow! Just amazing, the bad thing is that I just can't afford it at all to get one, but I'm happy you have one in your hands. I hope you do some more videos for this amazing e corder! As a guitar synthesiser player, I think it’s great that players of acoustic/traditional instruments can get access to non-standard/unusual sounds from the instrument they prefer playing, rather than having to fumble about with keyboards. I guess things like the Roland Aerophone and the previous Akai and Yamaha wind controllers are more targeted towards players of instruments like saxophone or clarinet than recorder players, or have you tried those too ?

5:39 I was thinking that it would be a waste if it couldn't cover the whole range that existing acoustic recorders can cover, but I guess they did one better and extended the low end by a fourth below a Paetzold subcontrabass...and the high end a third above the standard top note of a garklein, I think?
They can't have programmed what pitch every possible combination of fingers should produce, so I guess that means it must do some kind of physics simulation that works it out.

Seeing this, it would be fun to have a comparison with the Eigenharp pico (which isn't trying hard to be a recorder but has ample modulation possibilities for fingers and wind input). Heck, even just plugging in a wind MIDI instrument (e.g. an Akai EWI or Roland WX7) into a synthesizer can be much fun for a fraction of the price...
