    also, companies making statements about ‘employees’ frequently do not include the third party warehouse seamstresses / lower paid workers. when they say employees can get sick leave, they mean shein corporate / higher ups because the supply chain allows that to not be a lie.

      It's really hard to not want to buy stuff from there when you don't have much money. As long as capitalism exists, there will be people supplying demand. We are the rich white westerns who can afford to buy clothes and then throw half of them out if they are not ideal. Maybe thrifting is a good option for clothing, but the everyday person cannot afford to buy only local items and food for everything - that's just the way the market works today and we shouldn't have to feel guilty about literally everything we buy since so much about the supply chain is not within our control.
      I have also heard that Shein and companies are just dropshipping companies who buy products from stores listed on AliExpress.

      @@saraha2667 I can't afford any clothing item over 10/15€ and there are no thrift shops I can have access to in my area. What should someone in my position do? Right now I will never be able to get rid of fast fashion, and I think that assuming everyone is in the position to do so is entitled and unaware of their privilege.

    Sarah, another major issue that I would love you to address are sellers on Depop who buy tons of shein and romwe items and sale them marked up! I have noticed this as an ongoing issue. Many of the sellers cut out the brand tags, then if you ask the brand they say "it is unbranded" or "I thrifted it, not sure".
    I called one girl out for having items I saw on shein. This is when I still shopped at shein and didn't know better. Anyways, she got so mad at me and we argued for about 10 minutes before she blocked me. To put it in perspective, she had literally 100k depop followers. Insane. The item in question was a tank top she was selling for $45 that shein sales for $8.
    It was so painfully obvious as most of her items were shein, but I just called her out on the one because it had the most insane markup.
    If you want links to see for yourself, I can provide via email.

    • @catchats
      @catchats Před 4 lety +71

      @kfreshify I definitely understand all that and it's different when people are fixing things up or "flipping" the items, but if you're just going to the store & buying a tshirt for $3.50 then coming home and selling it as is for $45, I think there's an issue. there's a lot of people who turn it into their own sort of business/DIY store and I don't have a problem with that.

    • @katharinamarcoe9732
      @katharinamarcoe9732 Před 4 lety +59

      Related to the upcharging, one thing I don’t see addressed much about selling thrifted items on depop and the like as a full time job is just how much the sellers are taking from their local community. Secondhand stores are ultimately for people who need the affordability. I say this as someone who thrifts all the time for vintage pieces, but it seems unethical to me to get carts of things from every store around you just to resell.

Buying ethical is not an option for many unfortunately, and thus it is on people for whom buying clothes is a commodity to buy ethically. “Online thrift stores exist” Except those are usually curated, which means they cost more. Or in the case of a site like ThredUp, their measurements are completely off and you can’t find anything you’d actually wear. IRL thrifting is incredibly hard for those who are plus size or who work full time jobs, you either can’t find your size or don’t have the time to find things that are your size. I’ve been poor most of my life and got most of my clothes from Forever 21 or Hot Topic when I was in middle school and high school until I started making my own money and could decide where to spend it. I don’t buy clothes too often now but when I do I still don’t have the means to spend a quarter of my paycheck on a pair of jeans, and no thrifting isn’t an option for me because I will never find a pair that fits over my big thighs and is flattering in any way. I am wholeheartedly for the cause of minimizing fast fashion, but it annoys me to see people who think they’re better than others because they “only thrift or only buy second hand”, that’s great for you! I’m glad you have that time or can afford it. There’s no reason to shame those who can’t do the same as you because they don’t have the same means. The main issue imo is that people who DO have the means to buy sustainable fashion don’t, they instead constantly buy big amounts from F21, Brandy Melville, and the likes. I’m poor and fat and here are ways that I’ve started cutting fast fashion out of my life:
    1. Thrift when possible( this includes resale like Depop, etsy, thred up etc) thrifting is tricky when you’re larger, there’s not a ton of options so I don’t rely too much on that tbh
    2. Clothing swap groups on Facebook and Instagram, you can find them in your area or start your own group! People pass along their gently loved clothes usually for free or cheap
    3. Sew my own! I buy vintage fabric from estate sales or thrifting (sometimes sheets and curtains tbh) and make simple things for myself. Sewing is easy to learn and you can get tutorials on CZcams and patterns are cheap on Etsy
    4.repurpose what I already have, old jeans are this years shorts or tailoring things I didn’t like to fit and be something I like

You can even join local “Buy Nothing” groups on Facebook and get free clothing that way as well as pass on things you no longer need. You have to acknowledge the whole class privilege it takes to buy ethically. And also acknowledge that trendy kids and wannabe influencers go to thrift shops and buy the clothes that actual people could benefit from to upcycle them.

For example, if you’re plus size it’s difficult to find stuff that fits, or if you’re working a lot you don’t have the time to invest in thrifting. Ebay isn’t a good resource for clothes either... people aren’t lazy if they simply can’t afford ethical clothing

And being able to treat myself with a $5 top at Forever 21 genuinely improved my mental health and made poverty easier to deal with. I’m not rich but things are better for me now. Fast fashion is still more in my budget, and I grew used to buying it, but I’ve started to save up and just wait to buy something more sustainable. So, I'm just going to be honest here: you're right that Shein, being a fast fashion brand, is not the best brand to buy clothes from. However, that being said, I can't really afford cute clothes from non-fast fashion brands. I'm currently unemployed and when I was employed, I was only making 12.50/hour, which was hardly enough for my rent, much less all of my other bills such as electricity and car payment. As much as I want to buy from sustainable brands, I can't afford $50 for a skirt, I don't have the time/money to learn how to sew, and haute couture, which is at least more sustainable than fast fashion, is WAY out of my budget. Even buying from department stores like JCPenney's and Macy's is out of my budget because, while they still tend to sell fast fashion brands, I'm fat, and clothing for fat people is extremely expensive compared to "standard" sizes. I would thrift, but again, I'm fat, and finding cute clothes that I actually want to wear that don't make me feel ugly is really hard given the area that I'm in (I live in a suburb wherein most of the people living here are older or children and therefore the clothes are either not something I would wear or... children's clothes). I do thrift items that I really like, but those items are very few and far between, and tend to be shoes since clothing is, as mentioned earlier, difficult for me to find while thrifting. I'm not attempting to defend Shein, but I feel it's important to point this out -- not everyone has the means to afford non-fast fashion. Sofia essentially said what I am saying here, but I wanted to give my reasoning for buying from Shein.
    Just as a side note, I do want to say that Shein actually has decent quality clothes in comparison to some other fast fashion brands that I've shopped from and have a pretty wide array of sizes on their website, some of which could even fit an American size 5x (I'm personally a 2x-3x). Finding decent quality clothing in bigger sizes that isn't mega expensive is honestly very difficult, as I mentioned earlier. Again, not trying to defend Shein here, but I personally feel that compared to Forever 21 and other popular fast fashion brands, Shein has the widest variety of styles, the widest array of styles, and the most relatively quality products.

    So I completely understand where half of this is coming from but the other half, I have had a different experience than stated in the video. I don't know, I've ordered two big hauls of shein clothing and accessory items about like 6 months apart, and both I can say definitely came within 7 business days. I live in Florida, which I'm sure has nothing to do with it since it's a Chinese company, but I just thought I'd say from personal experience shipping has always been great. Also, sizing has always been almost exact as well, every time I order I check the sizing charts and make sure I'm buying the right size. I do agree, that it is fast fashion, which is bad for the planet and I will agree that some of their clothes are not the bust quality and smell. I just usually wash it once and it goes away.
    However, I feel like when you are talking about seeing one thing on the website, and seeing something completely or very different irl, it sounds way more like wish. Every single thing I've bought from shein looked exactly how it looked on the website. Maybe not the same material I was expecting (which is not often), but idk. Once again this is just personal experience, and I am now learning about how bad fast fashion is so I'm planning to thrift more, but just thought I'd say this :).
    I understand this is not everyone's experience with Shein I'm just stating mine.

    I just watched a tiktok of someone spending $800 on Shein clothes with the caption "time to destress" or something like that, and the comments were *filled* with people saying "stop saying 'don't buy fast fashion' because it's her money and she can spend it how she wants". The other aruguemnt I saw over and over was that "Shein isn't the only company that exploits sweatshops, so don't tell her how to spend her money while you buy from Apple and H&M, etc". And I mean, I get their point I guess, but right now, it's not about completely eliminating sweat shops, but minimizing them as best we can, until we get to a point where we can (hopefully) eliminate them.. at least, that's how I see it.

      Trends are honestly just a way that big companies trick you into thinking that the clothing you have is never good enough, so that you will keep giving them money. Like Tan France says, there's a difference between fashion and style. Figure out what works for you - your style - and then stick with it (allowing it to evolve over time, though). I've never been trendy (except in 2012 when the trends coincided with my style for that one year), but i get compliments nearly every time I go out because I know what works for me and I stand out.

    This video really made me think. I'm a fat woman in a country where it's not accepted to be like me. That translates to not being able to buy clothes at normal stores, actually sometimes i can't even find clothes that fit me correctly even though i'm a size 1 XL and if i do find them they're ethically made but extremelly expensive... i was tempted to buy at shein because of the price of the clothes (living in a constant economical crisis it makes a lot of sense) and also because they have cute clothes that are made for all types of women to wear. I don't want to defend fast fashion at all (i'm really against it)but my reality made me think that this video lacks of seeing other realities than the middle class american view of how things work. I'm sorry if this sounds harsh but blaming the people who buy from the company (while assuming they're all people with the possibility to buy ethically that just choose not to) instead of the company itself is not it. I'm sorry i live in a third world country where ethically made clothes are worth four, five, six times more than the non ethical version of a chinese company but i just can't afford it.

They also have a lot of great korean skin care and makeup. From my experiences, I've not yet been disappointed with an order from YesStyle, some clothes may fit differently than I had originally expected, but nothing too drastic. Also, the clothing I've ordered holds up pretty well and lasts a while. Their shipping times are honestly pretty quick considering they ship out of Hong Kong, maybe 2/ 2 and a half weeks at the quickest (which is still a longer time, but I personally don't mind waiting that much so idk) Plus, their customer support is amazing. They get back to you quickly and are respectful and informative in their responses to you. I returned an item once and it was an annoying process as is anything you return online, but it was relatively painless. Also I take care of my stuff. I usually shopped at H&M and Zalando (I'm from Europe) because they're the only ones where I can get nice things that actually suit me. I haven't bought anything in over a year and most of my stuff is over 5 years old. I'm not saying I wasn't wasteful at a time, but I'm trying to change, and it really is possible. koRnikon I’m not saying that it’s not possible to be poor and find good quality clothing. I’m saying that it’s harder to do. I personally typically go to thrift stores all the time, but they’re currently closed due to coronavirus. And I will keep items for years, but that is my personal choice. I have the time and the means of transportation. That’s a privilege. It’s also possible to change those habits to better less wasteful habits overtime. Find me an alternative that’s better for the workers, customers, and environment combined and see if people wouldn’t jump to support that company. I truly believe they would. But they’re not any of them currently. H&M is also problematic and wasteful. This is also a political problem and it goes back to the U.S’s failure to properly compensate its workers and a general decline in public programs. I don’t how things are in your part of Europe, but here, many people work multiple jobs to stay alive. They come home exhausted and they try to make their dollar stretch as far as possible. To speak on the issue of fast fashion and look down on its customer base but not acknowledge the privilege you have to do so, is wrong. Poor people aren’t out here trying to fix the world, they’re just trying to survive.

    Same for brands like Forever 21! They’re sale section in store is always SO crowded and cramped with clothing. And the sad part is that most of their stuff gets thrown out. Once I became more educated on fast fashion and what actually happens bts I’ve stopped buying from brands like Shein, Romwe, Forever 21, etc.

    I've always had a great experience & you just have to look at the reviews with pictures. Quality is good. If you don't like it, then mind your business & stop worrying about what other people spend THEIR OWN MONEY.

    Ive bought from Romwe ( i think they are affiliated to Shein) and never had an issue with the clothes. The only thing i wouldnt recommend is buying leggings or jeans from them because the quality of those (from what I've bought anyways is not great :( ) but other items like tops, dresses, pjs , jewellery have all come in good condition. No chemical, factory smell , no color bleeding, stitch issues. So maybe ive just been lucky

    I bought a shirt from them and they literally misspelled "lightning" as "lighthing"
