Callaway Land Rover? We Tear Down The ENGINE for a New Project!

  • Today we pull the Callaway engine out of cold storage (well kind of). We get to tear it down and take a look inside to see what Callaway modified on this rare Range Rover Engine.
    In the late 1990s Callaway produced a modified Range Rover. Quite a rare piece as I believe there were only 250 of them made. A shade more power and some different touches throughout the vehicle made it a special P38.
    We were able to unintentionally get our hands on one of the power plants out of a wrecked one. Is it healthy? What was tweaked inside? Today we find out.

      Yes, kind of neat that they hung onto that for it.

    I’m so glad I found this page, how I missed Land Rover content this substantial I have no clue. Been daily driving zero option r380 discos since the first had a factory warranty. (The dealer had never seen one with three pedals). The latest is a 97 and as far as I can tell based on build date the third from the last manual LR ever brought to the states. One of those top two I know was parted out. Keep up the good work. It’ll be nice to plow through your older stuff.

      That is very neat. I love those manual D1s. Especially the stripper ones. I can’t say I’ve ran across many 97s in a stick, that is cool to have.
      I have the parts compiled to swap my XD/Eco challenge one over at some point.
      I’m glad you stumbled across the channel as well, I’ll keep plugging away at these things laying around and it makes it more fun to do the videos with some Land Rover enthusiasts watching.

      @@LostCauseRanch the message boards in the 90s and early 00’s always claimed there were less than 100 97s. I’ve searched for 20+ years and the Land Rover North America records dude doesn’t even know how many, but they definitely exist in very small numbers.

    Fascinating- never heard of a Calloway 4.6. I recently did a defender with 4.6 out of a p38 with the r380 - you’re probably not doing the bottom end but if you do, consider 4.0 pistons . Straight swap for 10.5 ish to 1 compression. Runs great on a megasquirt, easy setup

    • @LostCauseRanch
      @LostCauseRanch  Před 9 měsíci

      Yeah it is an oddball thing. I’m probably going to leave the bottom end alone but that sounds like a good thing to keep in mind for the future in the pistons.
      How do you like the megasquirt on it? I’m considering that for this one.

    • @robjcp
      @robjcp Před 9 měsíci

      Megasquirt is great - I actually used the Speeduino (being a cheap arse) but it has more resolution and works great. I think I used recon injectors from a ford (Bosch) v8 - happy to send the tune if it helps . Setup is easy

    That was a “Thank Fu*k” moment when you discovered the flywheel bolts were restricting the crank from turning, as it would have been a real pisser to have strip her for nothing. From the images the tops of the pistons and bores look in amazing condition, seeing she’s been in storefront so long, fingers crossed the heads are a simple strip and freshen up 🤞. So which of the project vehicles is this beast destined for? Need to seal that fresh concrete floor before it gets contaminated with oil, just saying 🫣. Keep up the great work. 😎👍

    • @LostCauseRanch
      @LostCauseRanch  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Yeah I was kind of bummed when it wouldn’t turn over. Didn’t even consider that as a potential problem as it has been indoors since we got it. Funny that it needed up being a non issue, emotional roller coaster haha. I think the heads will be good but we shall see.
      I know the floors need to happen before I have too many permanent Land Rover spots haha. But that is the next project after the insulation and heat is in there. Then I’ll be able to put it down at the right temp.

    Shorter velocity stacks for sure. If you have to mill the heads, then do a dry installation at 50% torque and a layer of modeler's clay on the pistons. This will show you any interference with piston/vavles.

    • @LostCauseRanch
      @LostCauseRanch  Před 9 měsíci

      That’s a good suggestion. I’m hoping they are straight yet so I don’t have to mill them, but we will find out.

      I thought so. Probably about an 1.5” or so if I remember correctly. But it has been a bit since I’ve had a a gems I take off.

      Somewhat undetermined. I have it narrowed down between 2 or the Rovers here.

      Yeah for sure! I need to get one of them leak down testers and see if I can isolate my number one cylinder miss. It’s like 100% miss all the time😅I’m almost positive it’s a valve problem. My poor Land Rover is the most neglected vehicle in the fleet, I love it but don’t have time/space to tear into it

    Hey there, I contacted you about a year ago (I was going by Central Oregon Detailing,long story) anyway, I offered you the 2 4.2 “iceberg” core engines I have in storage in order to keep them out of the landfill. I know you have a couple of projects that they would be a great upgrade for. If you are still interested let me know.

    • @LostCauseRanch

      I mentioned before that I am swapping an LS3 into my 95 LWB RRC. I used the ACE kit for connecting the ZF to the LS and ICT brackets for the ALT and PS. I had the same clearance issues. I modified the PS bracket and used the low mount tensioner and have clearance issues with the steering box. I am thinking your tensioner bracket solution may solve the issue. Not sure if I can make one or not. Its not available to purchase, correct? I recently had some new brackets and hardware installed on my lower back for stabilization so I have a couple of months to plan it out😆 @@LostCauseRanch

    wow still looks good really on the pressure test, does look like normal usage lol, oh is that a harbor freight pick set lol. how did the head gaskets look? and replace every gasket hahahaha

    • @LostCauseRanch
      @LostCauseRanch  Před 9 měsíci

      It will definitely get all the gaskets.
      The pressures were good minus the one but I’m not overly concerned about being able to get that corrected.
      It is a harbor freight pick, terrible pry bars they are haha.
      Head gaskets looked perfect, so I think we are good there.

      Supposedly it was about a second quicker in the 0-60 than a regular 4.6 Range Rover. But some of that would have been the change in gearing as well.
