  • Something went wrong with the previous upload, so here is the 4K version of the Athens Marathon.
The Athens Authentic Marathon is a great but very tough race. As the mother of all marathons it was one high on my bucket list. A hot sunny day for an already tough race with most of it being uphill. The Athens Marathon is known for it's tough course and with my recent knee injury I wan't sure how I was gonna do during the race.
It took a lot of walking, a lot more than I am normally used to, but with the inclines being really tough on my knee I didn't really have a choice.
The marathon through Greece's beautiful hilly countryside has a beautiful course and does a great job organising a wonderful race. With crowds along the course almost the entire race there is a great boost for all the runners when it gets a little tougher.
My goal for the marathon was to finish it and try to cross the finish line somewhere between four and five hours. I came in at 4 hours and 42 minutes. With all the walking and filming I did I was pretty pleased with my time. I started my race way too fast, I felt great and was still hoping my knee wouldn't act up, but after 15K I knew I had to be careful and walk the steep parts uphill to not hurt my knee too much.
Running into the Olympic Stadium was incredible, the sight of it running towards it, the crowd inside cheering and looking around the arena while running towards the finish is just indescribable. What an amazing feeling.
The video has become more about my struggle during the race than about the course of the Athens Marathon, but I hope you still enjoy the video.

What a race... 15 km nearly straight , 16 km uphill and a final run in the Panathinaic stadium that the first modern olympic games took place. Pity for your pain in your knee, (as you know already , I had also a pain but did not stop me ...and start walking). In 2019 race we had a early rain but some clouds make the race confortable. This is the authentic...Next month ,early days of June 20 will be oppened to enlist for Nov.8th race but due to virus the places may be up 5,000 only. The best scene of your video the girl with the branch of olive tree.

Thank you. The race was amazing, even though I was having a hard time, I loved it.

My mom was out of town so I waited for her to return to watch it together; apologies for the late comment. Arno, this was super encouraging and motivating. Normally you fly through your races, seemingly without any of the struggles a lot of runners face. But for this marathon, you had all the normal challenges of bathroom break, heat, pain, low energy, poor sleep, stress of getting to course on time, and showed yourself pushing through to finish. Well done and thank you for showing us the many sides of racing!

Thank you. Don't worry about watching it late, that's what it's on CZcams for, so you can watch it when it suits you. :-)
It was a tough race and we all have our good days and our bad days. I'm still struggling with my knee now, the thing I'm most bummed about though is that this injury is not from running, but it is really messing with my running. I hope it will heal soon and I can get back to my normal training.

Very inspiring, Arno. Currently recovering from PF. Hoping to run a half marathon in the OKC Marathon in a October. I really enjoy your videos. I put the Athens Marathon on my bucket list of races.

Jess6Gun thanks, that’s good to hear. Hope your recovery is going speedy and you’ll be able to run the half marathon. I’ve heard a few people about that race, seems it’s the one big event coming up soon, so let’s hope it happens. We’re having some 10Ks around here, so that’s a start. 👍🏻

RunArnoRun I heard from the doc yesterday. OKC is a “no go”. Disappointed. But I should be able to start training again in 6 weeks. There is a half and half marathon in Tulsa in December. Hope I can run a half marathon then.

Thank you Arno for reuploading this great video. I've watched this in 4k on a 65inch tv and it is just amazing. This marathon is on my bucket list for exactly the same reason you mentioned in the video. It is a privilege to get such a front row seat and to witness what we can expect from this race. The last 5k through Athens was so full of energy and then the finale through the Panathenaic stadium appears to be the ultimate climax. I realize the heat was awful but considering the weather in Northern Europe at present I am sure you will begin to miss the sun very soon.
As for your run and effort, great job!! It is not easy to run with an injury yet you persevered through it. From the looks of things it appears you may have went out a little too strong on that first 5k. A marathon is all about efficiency yet we get caught up in all the excitement and wind up running too fast in the beginning of the race. Inevitably that translates into the following; fast starts=slow finishes. I'm fairly sure this is what also exacerbated your knee pain later on in the race.
Anyway, big thumbs up for your video from Poland and looking forward to seeing more. Hope your knee heals quickly and completely. Take care!

Thanks for watching the video and your comment. I really did start out way too strong at the beginning. This was from the excitement of the race, that I was happy to finally be able to run again after more than 2 weeks of rest, but also cause of the built up adrenalin from that very stressful morning. I went from a very low point of disappointment to rushing to find my way to the start to being really happy and relieved that I made it to the start. It doesn't really show in the video, but it was an emotional morning.
Another thing that was very emotional was that finish in Panathenaic stadium, just a perfect finish to the race. You have a great race to look forward to.
      Take care,
      Arno
