  • How to fix the leaky third brake light on a 2014-18 Silverado or Sierra. I highly recommend anyone with this issue to resolve it sooner than later as I have heard horror stories with mold and moisture issues.

    AJ, saw your video after my 2016 GMC Sierra brake light leaked and stained my headliner. I was like, WTF. After seeing the video and saw it was an easy fix. Lightining Fast worked great! It's always something! Thanks sooooo much for helping people out! Regards!

    Great video! Gettin ready to fix my 2016 Sierra....Already happened to my previous truck...2008 Silverado....GM definitely has a problem with these seals going bad! First one was under warranty...this one isn't,...dealer wants 2500 bucks to replace light and headliner. Gonna do it myself for the price of some sealant and cleaner. Will let ya know how it goes!

    I walked outside and wondered why there was condensation IN my truck. I shit a brick when I saw the water damage on the headboard in the back. My Truck is only 7 years old with 100k miles. I baby that thing. Your video definitely helped! I gotta fix this.

      Definitely check out the third brake light. If not, my antenna (shark fin) was leaking as well. Factory warranty replaced that though.

    Great video thank you! Not only you showed how to fix the leak you showed how to remove the stain as well. Another approach to this is you can caulk the the gap between the third brake light and the top. My 4.5 year old 2018 hasn’t leaked yet but I did it anyway.

    I just had to do this as well. I have an aftermarket LED smoked 3rd brake light. Seal lasted awhile but now started leaking. Put a new seal along with some silicone. Just ordered the stain remover. My stains are very faint, but me knowing they are there if I look closely bothers me haha.

    I havent had any leaks.. but had to replace bulb. Removed old seal ordered new one from AMZ.

    This was a known issue on my 2005 Colorado too and they issued a recall AFTER my interior had been ruined.

    When I originally looked this video up it was for just the replacement for the brake light but then since I changed the brake light since it burnt out now I'm getting water there is another video that has a Amazon new gasket I ordered that and I'm going to put that on and put new silicone sealant on as well

    Going to fix mine this weekend. My 16 Sierra started this a few months back and it was just when I went through the car wash but now it’s any time water hits it. Super annoying how much we pay for these trucks and simple things like this fail so fast

    Do you know off hand if you can see the the roof skin from the 3rd break light Getting PDR done wanted to see if there’s access there instead of taking the roof liner out thanks 🙏

      Shoot I don’t remember exactly, but I would say it’ll be good access to the bottom side of the roof metal.

      Nope no problems other than I had to tilt the housing back because the adjustment knobs couldn’t give me enough height.

    How did this fix hold up long term? Just started noticing this same issue with my 2016 2500HD. Bought a new light assembly and the chemical guys lighting stuff to clean the headliner. Hopefully new light assembly shows up before it rains again. Plan on putting a bead of silicone on the new gasket before i install it

    Just went through this myself. Bought the Chem Guys spray and GE clear silicone.
    Its a windy day here so when I sprayed the upholstery cleaner I inhaled more than what actually got on the ceiling.
    Also, I put the silicone all the way around the seal. Wasn’t liberal with it but … hopefully I didnt put too much.

      Well crap, now my center brake light is out. Did I put too much siicone in there? Is it gonna be hard to get it off again?
      I’m pretty sure I plugged it back in sufficiently because the bed dome light still works.
      Ceiling looks much better though. 😊

      I’m betting I was too rough with the light fixture. There was water inside it so I shook it back and forth. Doh!! 😣🤭

      I thought the same thing. I have yet to pry it off since then, but I would think it’ll be harder to pull off and will have to be re-sealed when installed again.

    This video saved me ALOT of money! However… in the video you showed the truck 3 weeks later after you did the detail. Does it take it that long to properly dry? I did mine yesterday and it looks like it got the stain up but looks like it is leaving g another stain from what I used to clean it? Or maybe it’s still drying? Just curious if that is normal?

      I used the same chemical guys stain remover. It got the original stain up but looks like it is leaving another stain from the clean up job if that makes any sense? It literally has only been a day… but it feels dry? What was your experience with yours?

      Hmm…mine was dry, I believe in the same day or maybe two. It shouldn’t leave another stain, but I’m not too sure. It might be if you sprayed too much and the chemical is still in the fabric and didn’t wipe off.

      Same here. Looks like bigger stain than before now. I applied generously as mentioned in video and wiped excess. Still day one but looking like it’s not doing what it was supposed to

    I haven’t done this yet. I did replace the light with a brand new GM light but it still leaks I added some extra gaskets around the outside of the light housing and it leaked again. I just watched the video but nervous about silicone in the light before determining the exact cause of the leak. Any thoughts??

      Where is it leaking at - the rear? I also had an issue with the shark fin (front antenna) leaking. You could have another leak point. If not, I am an advocate for the silicone because it seals the plastic housing to the metal nicely.

      @@AJLoDato22 yes, it is leaking in the back on the headliner just below the third brake light. Just surprised that a brand new light would leak. In fact, I took the first light back and replaced it with another light and still leaking.

    My rear center floor against the back (Behind the seat) is pretty wet- Could this also be from the 3rd brake light??

      It could be, it wouldn’t hurt to look at the seal on the brake light. I’d also check the rear window or roof rails.

      Yes I believe that would work. As long as it comes with a new gasket it should be good. Or silicone will work too.

    Did you dilute the solution? I bought this and it says to dilute it. But if that’s true it makes no sense why the spray bottle is full.

      I had this spot, and the roof-mounted antenna (aka shark fin). Both leaked, but the dealer replaced the antenna.

    Question: Will the silicone sealant be hard to remove third brake light in future? How to safely remove third brake light in future with this type of sealant? Just pull it?

      I would think it would certainly make it harder to pull off later. The only alternative would be installing by a new, better gasket which are available too

      Ok I tried it and ZERO leaks! Hell yea thank you. Also update for all this product doesn’t harden enough to make it hard to remove instead it stays soft enough and does the job very well!

      I guess just pull it off, scrape the sealant off and re-do when you have to install it back.

    I have the same problem but the water went off to the back driver side down the side onto my carpet. I thought it was the door seals.

    I did this and it still leaked. Now I have to break the light out to replace it. No worries, got a nice one for under 20 bucks.

      @@bogey19018 They cover some clips to attach roof rails to. Though it is really unlikely it's leaking from there (from research I did quick).

      Just a trim puller tool. I used one instead of a screwdriver so I didn’t chip the taillight.

    I've got a 2006 Silverado that had the same problem back in 2018, then the BRAND-NEW 3rd brake-light & seal started leaking just 6-months later!!! Sad to see they still can't fix this simple-issue 12-plus years later, pathetic!!

    My 2015 i purchased brand new, leaked so badly it fried the bulb and burned the socket to char, and that plastic they use is high temp, so it got HOT. That means water went into the copper wires as well. Gm has a huge potential for class action lawsuit on this. My interior started to smell musky is when I looked up to see the water stain. Which means mold! GM also has a recall of the curtain airbags because water can corrode them and cause them to go off unexpectedly. How does water get in there GM? Comment here if you want in. Im contacting a lawyer.
