  • Amazing demonstration of the ring effectiveness of Muay Thai. This is a Muay Thai fighter from the gym of famous kickboxer and actor Billy Chow. Contending against Muay Thai is style of kungfu called Tai Shing Pek Kwar (Da Sheng Pi Gua Quan 大圣劈挂拳). It's a hybrid Monkey Kungfu style that seems to have originated from Southern China. Either way, we have one of the coolest style vs style matches. Please go subscribe to the original channels too where I found the matches! Hope you enjoy my commentary! If any of you know more about Tai Shing Pek Kwar, please let me know!

      @FightCommentary  Před rokem +2

Yeah, it all makes sense now. You could tell even in the movie that Billy Show was used to taking hits. It's just funny that they took Billy Chow's Muay Thai hardiness and made it "Japanese." If only I knew Billy Chow's training when I first saw fist of legend. Before Karate started adapting, it was getting destroyed by Muay Thai. So during the Huo Yuanjia days, Karate definitely didn't have the Billy Chow toughness.

I haven't shown anybody this yet because this is pretty low key for now, but a company was helping put some of my videos on Chinese social media. The coolest thing I learned from that experiment was the level of anti-BS among Chinese audiences too. Chinese audiences in the comments were surprised people in America were so attuned to testing out and calling out martial arts BS. They thought it was only a Chinese thing. So it goes both ways, I think inside and outside of China, we're all trying to help weed out scammers, but we just don't talk to each other much because of China's firewall. But I can assure you a lot of passionate Chinese people are trying to bring the combat sports and martial arts realism forward.

I think monkey kung fu cant be used in safe duel, because the attacks are consisted of pressure point techniques and violent attacks like eye poke, groin attack, and things like that.
But the defense techniques may be used in mma fight. Some of the defense techniques are consisted of spring body mechanics that slowing down very strong attacks (this is also used in wing chun) and some opponent body control mechanic to make a takedown

i saw no monkey what so ever from the guy in the red trunks. looked more like an amateur fighter than anything else honestly.
Two things struck me as odd from this fighter compared to the Monkey I have practiced
    #1 lack of kicks
    #2 lack of jump kicks
#3 lack of desire to take things to the ground. monkey also involves a lot of clinching, sweeps and pulling to the ground.
another thing i noticed is his legs looked kinda weak, i know genetics plays a big role in muscle mass, but if your training monkey for a few years you would have bigger legs than even a Thai Boxer.

This fight should be in kickboxing rules.
The 'rising of the kneel when punch' is one of a move in the kata of 大聖劈掛. And the kung fu guy seems relatively new to fighting on stage.
Also,大聖劈掛門 started to include modern boxing and Thai boxing in their training in recent years. If you want to see more 大聖劈掛movement, another keyword will be 冼林沃(who beat a Japanese opponent in a tournament in 1983 in under大聖劈掛門)
However, 大聖劈掛門is a kind of 'modernised' kung fu. From his ft., we can see 大聖劈掛門 has been adopting modern combat sport element and it suppose to be able to fight the clinch

I have much respect for the history of Hong Kong martial arts. I find that the Hong Kong martial arts scene is a bit more progressive and evolved than some of the lowbrow "style vs style" fights we see out of China and the outright cons, bullshido, and jingoistic propaganda driven garbage we see glimpses of on CZcams, that they air on their "state TV" where some 70 year old taichi master is throwing an alleged "black belt in judo" master with a shoulder shrug.
Actual combat martial arts was suppressed in Mainland China for decades under Maoism. That's what gave the rise to sport wushu which is more of a performance art akin to gymnastics. It was only recently in the last 20 years or so that China started promoting practical forms of martial arts like sanda.
Hong Kong, which was under British rule until the 1990's evolved their martial arts much differently and under the democratic freedom of British rule which is why "monkey style" here looks more like kickboxing than actual stylistic kung fu. It wasn't state controlled.
Long before we became aware of Brazilian vale tudo and MMA, Hong Kong martial arts were already experimenting with full contact "style vs style" matches way back in the 1980's which was the tail end of the golden age of Hong Kong kung fu and martial arts: czcams.com/video/QquDpDJTVHU/video.html
The man fighting here, Ron Van Clief, had a brief career in film, and later went onto fight Royce Gracie in one of the early UFC matches. He was in his fifties at the time and fighting with a broken ankle.

I had read a bit about a monkey style that contained "pek war" in its name. So it's a style from the south huh? Very interesting. He did a solid effort and showed WAY more common sense and practicality than other kung fu guys. Still, got outclassed and I agree he did have his hand too low when he started to get beat up, no matter your style or strategy, when you are getting rocked it's time to defend yourself responsibly. I also find weird that he basically didn't know what to do in the clinch othe than block or jam some of the knees his oponent threw at him. I don't know about this thai shin pek war style in particular but some basic monkey posing I learned is easily translated/aplicable in the clinch.

Didn't really see much monkey here, even the TSPK branch. True monkey would not adapt well to MMA, somethings a monkey fighter would do: eye gouges, rip your ear off your head, pretend to be hurt, crumpled on the ground then when you come in to finish the fight, lash out to the groin or outside of the knee. Try to take the back while their opponent is standing.....In short, anything weird or against the rules = Monkey. The Shaolin branch of Monkey is a little different, it is rooted in hard qigong, also more for self-defense not for sport, again no rules. If you fight a Hou Quan/Hou Xin practitioner in the street, don' t worry. If you get to the hospital fast enough they should be able to sew most of your parts back on. Just hit the call button when you regain consciousness.
