A wise artist friend once said, "When you hate it, it's 75% done." This has carried me through many a project.
Nice

Nice
Nice
Hhhhh is this true though?
Genuinely.
Does this apply to other forms of art?
Could you say that's held up by your own artworks?
Because if that's the case - if that's genuinely the truth - it's somewhat reassuring.
Every time I see Karina's picture now, I'm going to remind myself she's holding a knife just off-screen.
Same with Nathan's tentacles.
I legit forgot they did new portraits and then Jacob’s popped up and I was like “WOAH”
I’m gonna miss the old ones... had such good classic Drawfee energy
Nathan just. Keeps. Going.
And the secret crop top for jacob
Same.
Karina and Julia: *slaps canvas* this bad boy can fit so many details on it

Jacob and Nathan: *slaps canvas* this bad boy can fit so many friend shapes in it
Except not so much this episode, but normally it would be true

They mentioned how detailed hollow knights backgrounds are and I wanted to say for anyone curious they were able to achieve this by using a 3D game engine, Unity, this allowed them to layer multiple backgrounds on top of each other to give the illusion of depth in the backgrounds so if you look at the game in the game engine you will see that instead of one complexly detailed background there are 10(I do not know the exact number they used so I just said 10 its could be more it could be less) different backgrounds placed at progressive farther distances away from the camera so you get the distance perspective of the 3D game engine in the background of the 2D game and they use the same trick for the foreground as well just they place the foreground layers in front of the player and moving them closer to the camera and not behind and when you look at them straight on you see what you see in the game and I adore tricks like that in games
Just a little friendly info from an aspiring game developer
They also do different frame rates for different layers iirc
It was seven.
That's what I imagined they did
They did a parallax background. It's pretty common in side-scrolling games. Even SNES games did it. Just less of it because of storage restrictions.
If you want to achieve a similar effect in 2D art: one layer for the foreground elements, the "black foreground bits" they mention in the video, very dark; another for the character and the main pieces, like benches, lamps, vines, furnitures, gates, whatever is included in the room design that still has a distinct lineart to it, sharp and in focus; and then multiple, at least two but you can go more, layers of the background elements further away, with more blur each layer you move back, with the immediate background elements like spores or the wallpapers with just a little bit of gaussian blur, and then elements that would be extremely long distances (especially with little bug legs) away like waterfalls and lakes and openings or what's visible through windows on another with much heavier blur on that layer.
The jump in quality for everyone is really stunning! I feel like Nathan really flexed with how detailed and clean his character looks and those design choices are so solid.
I was thinking the same thing!!! He really showed us his A game this time around
I would buy this shirt if drawfee sold it lol
I personally think everyone is practicing by doing things they are not comftorable doing in their soare time to get practice, which is why they are getting and better. Either way they all did amazing in this episode
As Nathan started whipping out that character, all I could think was "I wish I could fight that character in Hollow Knight." He made a great job fitting the character into the art style
they also seem way happier
I love how Karina said she doesnt get dark souls then totally nails the character. And added fire by total accident, and shes like"i dont know if fire is a thing" and thats the central theme of the game. Nice work Karina, your drawing is awesome!
"I don't know if fire is a thing"

@Clarissa Smith It’s like Karina subconsciously absorbs a lot about stuff without even realizing it. I feel like I do the same thing, tbh

I know right?! CONFIDENCE NATHAN, CONFIDENCE.
I know right?! CONFIDENCE NATHAN, CONFIDENCE.
you can tell how much he clearly loves hollow knight and its art style and is getting into that nitpicky artist mindset of noticing all the flaws when i've just started replaying hollow knight again this week and the drawing looks gorgeous and other than like "okay yeah the backgrounds in the game are very cluttered and detailed sure, that's a difference here", he did it so well. he did it so much justice and it looks beautiful and so cool. give the man some confidence please
18:50 Karina may not be a gamer, but this is most definitely a pro gamer move. "I'm bout to wile out so lemme save real quick"
I'm dying!
You guys should draw each other as Studio Ghibli characters! (One of Dola’s sons from Castle in the Sky kinda looks like Nathan)

This idea is sooooooo good
Nathan literally just drew concept art.
Nathan's drawing just looks like a dad with all his kids that won't let go of him
Karina totally undersold herself and her skills. She made amazing-anime-poster quality, felt like it took her 4 hours, but if you check the clock, it took her 3 hours. 3 hours to make such a great piece, mixing together two styles she's unfamiliar with! She must've spent so much time building her art skills, that's awesome.
Can we talk about how Nathan's new picture makes him look like a hand puppet.
Thanks, now my life will be incomplete until I get a Nathan hand puppet...
I know how to make hand puppets and I'm very tempted to make a nathan puppet

I'm loving the Nito design. In the end, I'd certainly say the Kingdom's Edge aesthetic was perfect for the tone. It makes it more mysterious too - this strange shell-mound of corpses, at the edge of the kingdom, with no explanation or history. It just... fits.
Karina: I don't know anything about dark souls. Anyways here's a concept art quality piece for Miyazaki I made in 4 hours.
Fun random fact: Miyazaki almost took out gwynevere's bugungoos but kept them in since he was too nice to take it out, also Priscilla was originally supposed to cuddle with the player in DS1 but he took that because we aren't allowed to have too many nice things in dark souls ;-;

It's ironic how Artorias was corrupted by the abyss, but in Hollow Knight, the Void that comes from the Abyss is what destroys the infection
And the light is the ultimate enemy that destroyed the kingdom

Every intro he inches a little bit further up the screen until there is nothing but a comically long torso where Nathan's face should be
Fun fact: Artoris is lefthanded and he still kick ass with his dominant arm broken.
The best part is that his arm is broken because he most likely broke it saving Sif. Its also why his shield is gone. Its protecting Sif. Artorias is way too fucking cool.
Artorias is the best.
Artorius (idk how to spell name sorry) and the Hollow Knight are actually super similar:

He even impresses Julia, who is known for her flexing of just...the most intricate stuff. She says she's amazed at his recall. How he can just bang out a drawing from memory or imagination. Love the gang. They're all so talented in such unique ways.

When you guys talked about forcing yourself to finish art, even if you aren't happy with it? Honestly, that advice saaaaaved my art career.
So many of my art pieces have died an early death, because I find one thing I dislike, and immediately give up.
And let me tell you, 9/10 of those art pieces that I almost abandon, I end up loving. Plus, the 1/10 I'm not thrilled with, still helps me improve!

As fun as beans is, this video reminded me why I love watching Drawfee. The awesome art and funny jokes just scratch the surface. It’s so wholesome how supportive they are of each other and I love hearing the little tips and hints for artists starting out or struggling (even though I don’t have the skill or the patience to try myself). Dark Souls Hornet looks like a power rangers/kamen rider villain and i mean that in a good way
Julia's piece makes me think that he'd be the character that you would run into in a bunch of different regions as you go through a dark souls game, and he would give you little hints about what to expect in the region, and have a little side quest attached to him like the onion knights or anri of astora
always love when those sort of things are included!
her character reminds me of siegmeyer!

Fun fact: Artorias' broken arm was his good one. So every time he smashed you, it wasn't in his best of skillset. I really wish there was a fight against him in full strength. It's what I wished the most.
It’s actually a toss up wether that’s true or not, cause it’s also likely he got that arm broken when he used his shield to block a blow for manus, and then he decided to just leave it to defend Sif, since he couldn’t use it anyway. Still, we never see him at full strength
@@jtreview7506 His sword states that he was left-handed so his shield would have been on his right arm, meaning his sword arm got smashed and he ditched his shield to protect sif and then kept fighting with his "bad" arm until we come along and end his suffering. Honestly as much as I wish we got to fight him at his best the fact that he can curb stomp you at arguably his worst just shows how much of a legendary badass he was and no fight no matter how glorious could ever live up to the expectations that sets.
@@thewanderingobserver The sword in Dark Souls two does make mention about him (well not by name but its obviously his sword) being left handed, but I will point out that this could very well be due to the fact that the Left-Handed Theory was such a big thing in the community, that the developers decided to make a nod and include the line. I guess what I'm saying is that I don't believe he was, Originally, left handed. Also, I agree, it would be crazy fighting him at full strength, if he could block with that shield as well as everything else?

ALGORITHM BOI!!!
No one will ever read this, but as an avid Hollow Knight player (never touched Dark Souls, but I know HK took a lot of inspiration from it), here are my compliments for each drawing:
I adore Nathan's art, his style actually works quite well for Hollow Knight. I love the world-based elements to the design, the thought behind the weapon and the common bugs being under the cloak was all really cool inspiration. With just a few things holding it back, it represents Ari Gibson's beautiful artwork well. The soft shading and foreground/background layers set it nicely in the game's style, and I like that the scene seems based in the Kingdom's Edge instead of just any random place, it's a cool touch and works well with the colors and design of the boss.
I love the concept of Jacob's piece, the way he described how the boss fits into the universe was really cool. The touch of the bug 'skull' worn as a helmet is really good. The inspiration from both the infection and the abyss works well character-wise and creates a great visual, similar to the Broken Vessel fight as was mentioned. The idea of a cutscene was great too, and I just love the stance of the character and the way he emits light.
God Karina's is so cool. The swooshy cloak makes me happy, as a cloak connoisseur in the form of an artist and Hornet fan. I also love seeing such a simply-designed character be given so much detail and intricacy, it's very cool to see. The fire thread is a great touch, even if it were only for aesthetic purposes. Karina created a whole detailed beautiful action poster for Hornet and I am devouring it.
Julia's is beautiful, so deliciously detailed and I love her take on a Dark Souls-ified HK world. The human representation of Quirrel was very thoughtful and interesting, particularly in the mask and clothes. I love the foreground and background details, and the atmosphere the whole thing creates.
Also, to confirm the answer to Jacob's question, the Hollow Knight main character is most often referred to in the fandom as The Knight, or occasionally as Ghost and a handful of other names. Usually "the Vessel" isn't used for it specifically, but it's true that it is *a* vessel, and that it was referred to as such in the game a few times.
for each drawing a
iT's SO SATISFYING to see how they colour the drawing WITHOUT GOING OUT OF THE LINES. JESUS.
I think they have the lines on a different layer.
I think this is one of the highest quality episodes of Drawfee ever, everyone went really hard on this one! Every design is thematically perfect and I'm super impressed with Nathan's Nito, it's identical to the Hollow Knight art style and would seriously fit in perfectly with the game!
Loved Nathan's drawing, it totally feels like a boss straight from the game, I can even picture the animations in my head
same
Karina making the dopest drawing ever and completely convincing me she had played Hollow Knight and Dark Souls... Like the fire is white and looks like Hornet’s silk...
Once again, I am inspired by Julia's amazing ability at art things! I aspire to be able to create amazing things like she does! Although what Karina did with the fire is also something that I LOVE and want to be able to improve upon! And the whole background fading with Jacob and Nathan's drawings is amazing! Whenever I see pieces with that kind of stuff implemented it gives me chills and makes me want to be able to do things like that! Aaaaa you're all sooo good at different things and you all have different aspects that you use that I love and want to be able to do! So I guess I aspire to be really good at drawing like all of you! But I've also seen Julia's ability to make things that are absolutely cursed, and I vibe with it. Everyone else was like, 'I don't like this!' in the video about Thomas the Tank Engine oc video when she was drawing and I was just laughing because of the fact that they hated it! Sorry, I'm ranting. Basically just, while I'm not new to drawing, I've hardly painted, I'm self taught, and I'm trying to get out of this state I've fallen into where I've become comfortable with what I do and how I do it. I need to start branching out with different styles and medias. Y'all help keep me inspired when I'm low on ideas or motivation!
“Hornet Silksong... Coming this summer”
Exactly... We want to believe in it as well
Yeah, that's some wishful thinking
GORB HOPES AS WELL
Julia: Any breaks in this video is because I was cackling at watching the rescue dog show.
Me: *glances at artist portrait*
This was AWESOME! As someone who played both games adimently, I thought each drawing captured both games' styles beautifully. That and the peices were f*cking awesome! LOVED the Quirell one
there's something about nathan's drawing that makes me so happy he just perfectly nailed the hollow knight style it's so good
There's something so amazing about each one of them while drawing, like, Jacob can adapt to almost anything, and you know his craft when you see it, you *know* he drew that.
Nathan is adaptable the other way around, he adapts to other styles and just nails them completely, like he worked on the game itself and came up with mess-a-bugs Neato lmao
Karina works with layers alright but it's like her brain doesn't, and she unconsciously feeds one layer into another and all are cohesive, all make sense, and her colouring, o h m y g o d her colouring, I feel like I witnessed the craft of God
And goddamn Julia knocking out of the park, like, lineless??? the amount of detail???? the fact that she was watching some other show while doing all of it? This lineless works reminded me of that Vegeta drawing that she did a long time ago on Drawfee, and it's just- damn I'm blown away by all of these people.
I am actually, literally, BEGGING you guys to turn these into prints. I love the way these all look, and I really want to have these as posters to put on my wall. These are all so freaking rad you guys, I love them so much!!
“I hate myself”
“Good it’s almost done then”
I think that Julia is some sort of ancient art goddess with eons of experience.
