    They didn't mention this but this game went into overtime. If it had not, hundreds of people would have been pouring out of the stadium at this time and there would have been hundreds of fatalities from this tornado. It was truly a miracle. I was 6 years old at the time and I wasn't there but my father, sister, godmother, and god brother went to this game and chances are that if this game hadn't gone into overtime, some of the most important people in my life would probably be dead. Thank God that I did grow up with these people who mean so much to me.

      Hundreds of fatalities? No it wouldn't have. The tornado was no more than an EF1 when it went by the GA Dome. And most people aren't going to go out into an approaching storm. And you can survive being in 80 - 100 mph wind, if you stay low.

    I was a child when I attended this game many years ago and remember it from terrifying perspective. The crowds outside of the stadium disregarded evacuation procedure and pushed me away where I became separated from my parents. I was lightly battered by panicked masses until I was picked up by a kind woman and carried back to my parents. It so happened that same woman lived in our local area in our state and became my pediatrician shortly after we got home. It was scary situation, but it must of happened for that reason.

      As a former professional radio DJ, I can attest that it is *much* harder to improvise a cohesive account for something that you hadn't imagined could happen in your wildest dreams. In my town a van load of kids from a Methodist church had won (of all things) a basketball tournament, and I was supposed to go live to the arrival of the van at the central town square, where the Mayor was going to say some nice things and give them all sashes or whatever. The van was late but nobody thought much about it ... until I got a call from the State Trooper barracks saying that the van had been pulverized in a head-on with a drunk driver, about two miles from home, and all those kids were gone. That was in 1986 and I still think about it every day.

Could have gone to the game that was to be played right after this one, and if I had, me and my friend would likely have been on the street heading for the Dome when the tornado struck. • @swex85
    @swex85 Před 15 lety +9

    I could be wrong, but I was told by a friend that when you walk into the Dome, you're actually already on the main concourse level. If so, that would mean the field is actually below ground. The people on the lower level of seating would have been the safest, but there's a lot of concrete in the Dome.
