@@Circleofdrink How about for example: "Black tobacco, maté, and bladder cancer. A case-control study from Uruguay", seems to be done by some department of epidemiology so don't believe they had some bias you implied. Mate drinking was linked with higher risk of bladder cancer with at least the group of smokers that already had an elevated risk of bladder cancer. Because it's the bladder and not the mouth, the cause can't be some thermal effect of drinking something that is too hot. Have your views chanced since this video many years ago? I think they know the Mate tea contains those PAH compounds that are a known carcinogen, so I don't really buy that all the risk is coming form the hot liquid, but I also don't know what the true net result is as it seems the drink might actually help against some other types of cancer like colon?

    • @ablfc4424
      @ablfc4424 Před 2 měsíci +1

@@cyberfunk3793 I agree, the PAH content is the problem. The thermal damage is obvious, it's like saying "don't stand in direct sunlight too long, or you will get skin damage". The PAH content is a problem - Yerba mate companies know this, there answer to this is "the PAH compounds inside yerba mate are hyrdophobic, so those PAH's won't enter the water" we all know that is sh*te. If anything, it makes it worse, given that the compounds won't want to enter any water, but will latch on to any fat - in this case, muscle.

I started drinking Mate again (specifically the Guayaki brand) after going through a couple of boxes about a year ago. Honestly I don't know why I ever stopped. Mate is far superior to coffee. With coffee I would constantly experience heartburn. Also coffee would give me a boost of energy but it was nervous. Mate just gives me a euphoric calm feeling with no anxiety.

Ive been looking into it (huge help coming from you) and it looks fine to me. That hot hot temperature on their throats while drinking it all day is a great point. I think thats it.

    Latin name: Ilex paraguariensis.
It is well known as the source of the beverage called mate, Chimarrão, Tererê (or Tereré) and other variations, traditionally consumed in subtropical South America, particularly northeastern Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, southern Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay. It was first used and cultivated by the Guaraní people and in some Tupí communities in southern Brazil, prior to the European colonization. It was scientifically classified by the Swiss botanist Moses Bertoni, who settled in Paraguay in 1895. Thanks wiki!
I'm Paraguayan native drinking terere & mate since a kid. Now in my 50`iesh I'm never been sick with normal levels in everything in my system. All my people as per the rest of south America drinking mate find it as a replacement for carbonated drinks, alcohol & other type of teas, etc., as well as a therapeutics as it can get. No a drug at all, as per well explain for you in this video. Good on you!!!
Another fact that a lot of people doesn't know about mate & terere: Traditionally in Paraguay, mate or terere are an excuse to start a conversation with your family and friends, as per the conversations goes deeper, its seems the mate helps to polish relationships to a grearter level. Ah, final secret: The youngest one in the group as to be the cebador! Greetings from Australia!

Is there a difference in taste drinking from a traditional gourd as from a modern metal lined cup? How many times should one refill with water until the leaves are disposed? How about the interior lining of the gourd that might come off or scraped off? do you think that could be a contributing factor to the cancer agents found in the Yerba? Can you just drink it like a Chinese tea w just a few drops of the leaves in.a cup instead of packing the Yerba to the brim? I'm considering purchasing one, but don't know if I should get the gourd or the modern one. Thx

If it's really true at all, it's not the herb, it's the possible pesticides that can cause cancer (or other handling carelessness, or drinking it from aluminium - but that's a nerve toxin instead). So with everything, buy organic. When I first tried it I felt the "Euphoria Spirit", happiness, love life feeling! My problem is I don't like caffein (never was a coffee drinker). So I choose the herb blends like with horsetail and mint, or "cedron", etc. Mate is an interesting journey!

I burnt my tongue alot over the years with super hot pizza 🍕. And coffee and teas taste nasty to me now and yerba isn't hitting my taste in a good way either. I don't want to add garbage to make it taste better like I'd do to coff/tea to get the benefits. I want to enjoy not just force it. I was reading some use citrus fruits. I don't like store fruits. But I've been home growing kumkwats. I was just about to try infusing the skins for flavor. What's your take on that or if you have a vid pointing to this please reply. I have a condition called disassociative amnesia and I want to try and heal the mind. And enjoy something just to have a better mood.

    You got something wrong.
Terere is on thing and mate yuyo (commonly called mate con yuyo, which literally means mate with herbs) is another.
Terere IS more common in Paraguay and the northern part of Argentina, the weather is hot and humid over there so having something cool to drink is always welcomed. Proper Paraguayan Terere is prepared on a pitcher filled with cold water (ice is preferred), juice from a couple of Paraguayan lemons (some sort of half tangerine, half lemon small fruit) and the squeezed fruits floating inside. The Limón Paraguayo is pretty sour and bitter, the acid keeps the mate leaf from burning making it last quite a bit longer. Any citric would do, some may add sugar, but I consider it a heresy just like with regular mate.
The mate yuyo or mate with yuyos is a regional thing, most countries have their own versions. It basically is adding some herb to your everyday mate. Some are used with medical propose, if I told my grandmother I have a stomach ache she would add some Lemon Beebrush, there are tons of herbs that can take care of majority of the common ailments. I personally find them to be disgusting.
You can also make mate with milk, coffee, add honey and a lot more stuff.
As a side note: I've shared my mate with people who was going through a mild angina or a cold and I have never catch a diseased. It is worth mentioning I'm hardly ever ill of anything, but I wouldn't say the mate is responsible, I started drinking mate when I was 21.

The research that came to conclusions about cancer proliferation could not possibly consider itself credible given the immensity of variables. I would like to highlight one thing and this is my personal opinion. +seantendo001 85-80 Celsius degrees is the ideal temperature to prepare mate. You shouldn't boil the water, that's not healthy and the yerba is being burned at that temperature(it makes the mate unnecessarily bitter).

I also believe it would be difficult to highlight this through tests because the nickel ingestion is so low that it would not be present in high quantity at once. I choose to drink mate at 70 degrees Celsius and if i were to use alpaca bombillas I would go slightly lower than this.Hot mate does not taste nice anyway and I also do not get the euphoric experience from hot mate. And yes the properties of the mate are destroyed. I find moistening the mate with cold water improves the experience :-)

I understand that you do not want to have Yerba Mate associated with the term drug. But, as life is, many, many foods have functions as do modern pharmaceuticals. But, mature people are going to be able to accept such things.
Yerba Mate on cancer: There is discussion that Yerba Mate that has been traditionally dried by smoking process retains carcinogenic compounds known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Consider that smoked foods as sausage, bacon, fish, jerky, all contain higher levels of PAH. Yerba Mate modern process is available unsmoked, so a Yerba Mate drinker can enjoy with greater confidence.
Regardless. Yerba Mate is a much better habit than fast food, soda, energy drinks, etc. Is OK. Argentinians are still alive and well with their Yerba Mate.
Regarding Yerba Mate as a drug: Many natural foods have similar effects as pharmaceuticals. Mature people both know and exploit drug-like effects. The video addresses drugs as being alkaloids. Well, coffee, tea, Yerba Mate, etc. are transporters of the xanthine alkaloids caffe-ine, theobrom-ine, and theophyll-ine. Theobrom-ine is the alkaloid found in chocolate. caffe-ine, theobrom-ine, and trigonell-ine are in coffee. You see the alkaloids end in "ine". Like... Strychn-ine, morph-ine- coca-ine, novoca-ine, etc.
So, yes, Yerba Mate is "kinda" in the family of prescription narcotics. But, there are important differences that make them different enough to establish a hard line in social and legal acceptance. But, keep in mind that alkaloids, in high enough quantities ALWAYS poison the body. The kidney and liver must work to eradicate these compounds before a lethal dose accumulates.
The psychotropic effects of legal xanthine alkaloids is undeniable. I exploit my beverages for these effects, myself. In the morning, after consuming coffee of Yerba Mate, I have a noticeable change in mood and physical stamina. That is the very nature of a drug. It is legal and I admit that I exploit it. The reason it is legal is that the effects are largely desirable and harmless (or even beneficial).
Yerba Mate is a good beverage. I often do not consume mine in a traditional preparation, but I prepare alone or mix with coffee in a "French press" preparation. I adopted Yerba Mate later in life and my tastebuds are not trained to it. as it is very bitter like eating a raw aspirin. Also, I often require portability and convenience as I consume the product at work. But, Yerba Mate has been a desirable addition to my daily beverage consumption, with effects much more reliable than coffee alone.
If I die from Yerba Mate, I will post the details of my death on this page.

+Dragosz Moartescu Yes, it does. So does air we breathe(due to a pollution), BBQ food, fried food, baked food and smoked food. In addition, coffee contains more polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. On the other hand mate provides a lot anti-cancerogenic compounds, so we shouldn't really worry about mate causing cancer :) these day everything causes cancer.

Mate is a natural laxative, so if you aren't a regular consumer or your body is still getting used to mate, then this is normal. Essentially, the mate is detoxing the system, so to speak.

5:00 cancer is not destroyed by natural substances, but the natural substance "convince" cancer cells to finally "let go". Healthy cells instead "know" that they are useful and become even stronger.

Just to say, you said Mate is not a drug because its not an alkaloid / does not contain drugs.
It contains theobromine and caffeine which are drugs. Just legal drugs.

I think you're wrong about mate not being a drug. It 100%certainly is by any definition, a drug. It is a psychoactive stimulant. Mate is just one with an entourage effect. Many chemicals working in tandem produce those effects, very similarly to the way cannabis works. the soothing effects of mate even feels similar to cannabis.
it is a drug, but what is and isn't a drug is pedantic anyways, no drug is inherently bad in any way.
That being said i am certainly addicted to that mate entourage effect lol

From what I've read, there really has been no long term, placebo controlled study of Mate drinking. Most of the "research" has been in meta data studies where only small samples of a cross section of users are looked at. The biggest issue they point out is the high amount of use WITH other known carcinogens like cigarettes.

    • @Circleofdrink
      @Circleofdrink  Před 9 lety

I've read just about every recent study on the relationship between mate and cancer. Accepting that most of the research isn't reliably, admittedly by the scientific community associated with the matter, the only (somewhat) correlation I've found has to do with drinking mate with scolding hot water within groups who are already sick and/or exposed to heavy toxins in the environment. You may like the video I've made on this topic.
