Nutcracker came out before Swan Lake. And the ballerina who danced as barbie (blanking rn) mentioned how even in that short time, technology improved so much by the time she danced Swan Lake that they could actually see right after what it would look like on film and it the animation itself was also better. React to 12 Dancing Princesses next plz ! 💕💕

This is so true! I recently rewatched all my childhood Barbie movies, starting with the three ballet ones (in chronological order too!) and I came across the video of the ballerinas filming the 12 dancing princesses dance at the end. It was so interesting!
I think you're gonna cry when you see the pointe shoes in Barbie and the 12 dancing princesses, they're super pretty, shinny, colorful, they have flowers on them, they're customised for each princess ... but the ribbons are tied WAY too high!
That said, it's the best barbie ballet movie in my opinion, mostly because they didn't take an already existing ballet, they created the music and dance specifically for this movie and they absolutely nailed it, my favorite part is the Second Dance in the Magical Realm, and if I get married one day I WILL walk down the aisle on the openning theme
The music in 12 dancing princesses is all existing classical music, the theme is a rework of a classical piece

This was THE FIRST EVER barbie full movie, so it's a little quacky and wobbly in case of animation and *small feet* and questionable pointe shoes, but I still love it
I will NEVER forget that when this movie came out they had a contest to win Clara and the nutcracker and I WON! One of the greatest moments of my childhood! (And Clara had a platform so she could actually dance)

Barbie an the nutcracker was one of the first 3d movies where they had actual people in suits do the movements 😊 that’s why the movements are pretty advanced for that day and age in 3d.
Love that you’re reacting to these. Also the shots done with ballet are done in mocap as the ballerina is dancing to the choreography. At this time, if I remember correctly, it is not as refined as most systems are nowadays.
Yeah I think today it woukd be alot smoother. I think this was made in 2002 as a direct to DVD? So not the biggest budget. I still appreciate that they hired some actual dancers tho even tho this is like.... PS2 level mocap

As a former child who took years of ballet and current aspiring animator this movie hold a lot of influence. To this day I still think there's something so magical about it. Is it great animation? No ( it is very easy even at a glance to spot some weird rigging). But I think, like toy story, it works to the scenes advantage because they aren't moving realistically. I think the characters are moving in the way ballet aspires to look. It's ethereal and almost weightless. But they get a lot right like with the choreography and turn speeds that modern movies showing ballet like to exaggerate or even get rid of. You can still see this quality in the older Barbie movies based on ballet. It's a way of using the mediums disadvantages to elevate the overall product. Honestly I still find it beautiful.
I think you guys should do a Barbie and the Pink Shoes. It’s a mix of Gisele with some Swan Lake. It has an amazing ballet opening sequence & tons of dance. My girls love the heck out of it.

My little sister and I used to put these movies on and dance to them, complete with costume changes - I had Nutcracker, she had Swan Lake. So I was always Clara, she was always Odette. She was the snow fairy, I was the flower fairy...Fond memories. Except when I tried to fit into one of her princess dresses for this number once...did not end well 😅
😂😂😂. Love it, Barbie’s feet are too small and the Prince’s are like clodhoppers! I look at the footwork too while watching Ballet. You have furthered my education of Ballet with your videos. Thank you Josephine, Merry Christmas 🎄
As a cellist, this music is one of the best parts to play in the whole ballet. I love to be in the pit for this ballet!
I think Barbie did very well, considering she was training to be a ballerina, astronaut, veterinarian, President, Olympic gymnast, and who knows what else all at the same time!!!

For many years I was in the pit orchestra for the Nutcracker. It is all to rare to use a live orchestra rather than a recording and I was glad I got to make this as my job throughout December.
I couldn’t help but flinch every time her pointe shoes moved across the literal ROCKS on the ground… like I would have broken an ankle trying to dance on pointe on that ground..
Can we appreciate how much work Josephine and her crew puts into these videos?
Did anybody notice how Ken's ankles flexed nicely to wing out but his boots stayed perfectly stiff and straight when he went into relevé?

I actually just performed in the Nutcracker 2 weeks ago at the Barbara B. Mann in Florida. Dec 7th, Wednesday. I was a marionette doll and an angel, both on point. This will be my 14th Nutcracker performance. Also, in the past I have been a part of the Moscow ballet Nutcracker multiple times, it was a magical experience.
Today I have Nutcracker rehearsals and after that I am gonna binge watch all of the Nutcracker Movies ❤
Nutcracker was my introduction to ballet. This movie literally made me fall in love with dancing. It came out when I was 5 years old in 2001 and within the first 5 minutes I was completely hooked. It was the first animated barbie movie so it makes sense that the animation wasn’t the best but it still brings me such joy. ❤

I just gotta say, that once I started learning some animation stuff anime and the SU finale, I'm just so impressed with any 360 scenes because that is soooo hard to make it look good. And I think barbie did a fantastic job with that 360 wow

I made a ballet dancer out of an old Barbie doll. Doing so made me pay attention to the doll's feet and yes they are gear grindingly disproportionately small.
It's not the only body part out of proportion on Barbie. If she existed in real life, she would not even be able to stand up.

I have no dance experience or training, and taught myself how to do this dance with one move change because I couldn't do it... and I preformed it for a talent show and came 2nd place with no dance lessons...I always wondered why the sugar plum dance in this movie is so different from real life...

There’s some videos on CZcams showing you how they filmed real ballerinas with special costume technology to transform them into the CGI ballerinas. It’s so cool to watch and see how they do it! It’s the same woman playing Barbie in al 3 videos too.

Ahhhh I love Nutcracker season too! On the 10th I was just in my first dance en pointe and my first Nutcracker! Im a 29 yo female, just started dancing in 2021. I’m in a small studio and we did it low budget and it was beautiful to see all of our handmade props and hard work pay off! This Wednesday I’m going to take my mom to see her first “official” nutcracker, at the Smith Center in Las Vegas with NBT, my favorite 🤩 I saw it for the the first time last year and couldn’t stop crying from how beautiful it was, hopefully I can hold back the tears this time so I can actually see the whole thing 😂

I love this movie. I’m pretty sure they had a principal ballerina wired up which translated into the computer generated Barbie but swan lake might of been the first real ballerina they used 💜

Already saw Royal Ballet's Nutcracker this year. It was phenomenal 😍 Suprised I never watched these as a kid... but then I hated Barbie. I love how the main thing you comment on is the feet even in a cartoon 😂

This was the first barbie cgi movie and as each ballet barbie movie came out, the motion capture and models got better and better! (Still my favourite barbie movie though!)

I just rewatched all of these Barbie movies from my childhood, starting with the three ballet ones in order of when they were released. The Barbie nutcracker is totally jank because it's the oldest of the movies. You can see things get progressively better as you go through them.

So Nutcracker came out before Swan Lake!! They’ve used Maria Kowroski for all or most of the Barbie movies that include ballet. You should watch her videos it’s so cool!

The nutcracker was the first Barbie movie. I think it came out in 2000, so they did a really good job in mocap and the technology at that time. Swan Lake was the third Barbie movie. Loving to see how technology improves.
I went to a small Nutcracker production with Ballet Americana and the Detroit Youth Symphony Orchestra. It was really good!

This was the first movie they did and they did motion capture for the dancers.

this was one of the first animated barbie films so i think it was difficult for them to 3d animate the dancing, swan lake was later so theyd had more practice by then
This was from 2001. Barbie was Maria Kowroski and the Cavalier was Charles Askegard. So the technology was still a little tricky then as far as making it look like people were solidly on the ground, but the dancers were top notch.
