As a Bulgarian person, I'm gonna say your pronunciation was actually pretty good and close to the actual thing, so well done for that... The songs, oh man, I wish you could hear the real, good Bulgarian music, not this "public house trash". There are so many people with great talent that have created some pretty amazing songs. What you saw and heard so far from these videos is such a bad representation of the culture and artists. Either way, thanks for making this video! Always makes me happy when more people find out about the existence of our little country! Keep up the good work! :D

Hello, Brian. I accidentally ended up in your channel (you were in my recommendations oc) and I just want to provide you with an explanation you deserve since you decided to look up deeply into our country’s music.
The first song was very popular last year and both Gery-Nikol (pron. Geh-rhi Ne-call) and 100 kila (pron. Stoh Kill-ah) are among the most popular artists, each of them rose to fame in a different way. The provocative-commercial pop as you called it in the video sells very well in Bulgaria and is probably the only thing teenagers like to listen to (at least the majority of them)
The second song is a collaboration between the most popular producers in Bulgaria, Slavi (pron. Slav-e) the old dude, has its own talk show but unfortunately it has been announced that the broadcasting TV (bTV) will stop broadcasting it after almost 20 years on air, and Krisko (pron. Kris- co) who is an artist and a songwriter for many young singers, recently starting in this industry (btw he used to produce Gery-Nikol’s songs and her debut single was a collaboration between them which boosted her career but then she started making her very own music). This song was also a huge hit because it is again just as provocative and commercialised and probably has more than ten paid promotions in it (I don’t like this type of mv’s so I just watch them no more than once).
For the third song, yes, Azis (pron. Ah-zies) is a huge name in the music industry due to his unique voice, which is why, he is either hated or loved by the people who have listened to his music. As for the actual music in it, we (bulgarians) have our own genre which is very distinctive for us but very strange for the rest of the world. It is called pop-folk and it is a mixture if pop music and Bulgarian folklore music which is the reason why I personally don’t like this genre. Pizza and chocolate doesn’t go well together even though they’re frickin amazing separately and so is pop and folk music. The official music video for Habibi has reached almost or maybe reached 90M views on CZcams which makes Azis the number one most watched Bulgarian artist on a single video.
I’m so sorry but I’ve never heard anything about the forth band and song so I cannot provide you with further information about them... It’s probably a new thing because I’ve lived on the Isle of Man in the UK for more than two years and tried to keep up with the trends but I don’t think this is something the majority of Bulgarian population would like and that’s maybe why this group sings in English to attract international audience.

Another interesting fact - Slavi Trifonov is more like popfolk musician (popfolk is a traditional Bulgarian/Serbian music) and Krisko is a rapper. The colab shooked us all. I want more videos like this ❤

The only Bulgarian music I want a reaction to is folklore/traditional, with its unique sounds, rhythm and composition. Like Valya Balkanska for example. What’s actually popular music in Bulgaria instead though is this... Music that promotes ignorance and the worship of materialism and vanity. To each their own I guess, but to me it’s utterly repulsive.

The drum your talking about around 10:00 is actually a very typical drum beat that is used across much of the music in the Balkan region, it is mainly used in the more oriental/gypsy influence in our music. Azis is a gypsy/roma - so this is why.

When I first saw the thumbnail, I noticed that you were reacting to the more... scandalous songs out there and genuinely expected you to totally roast them. You were surpisingly respectful! Too bad you didn't see any of our actual all-time classics, because I promise you, Krisko, Gery-Nikol, Azis and 100 Kila are just "pseudo artists" and the shame of Bulgaria. Maybe excluding Slavi, but he is another can of worms who is already out of his prime so he is trying to stay relevant.
Your last choice really surprised me though. I feel like it would be an unpopular choice for most people, great to see that you did some digging though!
Is you're ever interested in all-time BG rock & metal classics, I'd suggest the bands "Aхат" (Ahat), Щурците (Shturtsite, literally meaning "The crickets") B.T.R. (No, not Big time rush, lol, B.T.R. existed before Nickelodeon even broadcasted Spongebob for the first time so the name isn't stolen). Some competent pop singers today would be Grafa or Miro.

Absolutely true! No offence, but well educated, normal people doesn't listen to those 4 selected songs. Those are hits at the clubs where young people still like to hear vulgar text and go crazy. Low level. Never heard of those songs. Again - no offence, but Bulgaria has a lot more beautiful and respectful music. The voice of Valia Balkanska is even placed on a golden disk and sent in space! Bulgaria has so much more to show. Great reactions anyway!

In the early 2000s I lived in Ocean City Maryland. During the summer there is a work exchange programs and I shared a house with four bulgarians, and they introduced me to Chalga Music. It was mesmerizing to me and it's stuck with me to this day. ESPECIALLY AZIS... his talent is undeniable. Cool to see another American checking it out.
