I made laptop out of Trash - With Desktop GPU

  • Hi everyone and thank you for 11 minutes of your time. In this video, I make one functional ACER laptop out of a few broken and non-working. I had a lot of troubles with this machine and I almost gave up but somehow I managed to make this laptop work again. The eGPU is working fine and the laptop is much faster, it feels like using a totally different laptop, nice boost. I cannot really confirm about most laptop models about eGPU support, I found some laptops listed as supported but actually are not, and the opposite. Current Specs: i7 3632QM, 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD, okay for daily basic tasks.

    Andrew, I haven't watched the entire video but when you switched from the Intel Pentium to an i7 it's possible now you require a 95W power adapter. Some computers output a warning others just refuse to power on. Perhaps this may fix your issue.

      He used the i7-3632QM, which got the same wattage as the dual-core Ivybridges, so the default 90W adapter for dual-core laptops with dGPU should be enough

    • @samohraje2433

      the laptop with that upgraded i7 CPU exceeding that limit a bit. Let´s say you comparing dual core against quad...okay.. you saw that that the both cpu has same wattage which is on paper completely fine but in reallity the i7 consumes around 15 to 20W more than Pentium and you can clearly that checked by using stress test and thermal monitoring. Original pentium runs on that heatsink just enough cool, like idk 70c max but with that i7 the temperatures are not 70 but this time 80, that means that the i7 consumes a bit more. it is not a tragic, the VRM should be also good to go but it requires a bit more watching because they might be overheating at some point. I was upgrading from sandy bridge pentium to an i5 ivy and it did increased the overall performance but temps was also a bit off a safe area so i was forced to use a cooling pad and later that day i discovered that the copper heatsink itself has some varnish or coating paint to match the look of that laptop chassis so i removed that varnish with IPA and temps was like on that pentium but this time on i5 and that i5 was 45 and pentium 35

This is not even vintage stuff that makes economical or sentimental sense to restore, it's just outdated stuff that sells for very cheap in working order and is worthless trash if it does not work. But you kept patiently working on it and showed you could do it. Congrats.

    Although the internal display works with the eGPU, your're probably giving up some performance because this PCI-e interface is very limited and the video card will have to send back the rendered image through it.

    @stephenhall3515 Před 6 měsíci

    One of the great pleasures of this site is seeing how meticulous Andrew is and how he cleans everything. This might not seem much but professional repairers will tell you that various sorts of muck cause component failure and that makes perfect sense given the physics of electricity. 'Clean' is not the same as just looking clean and fairly battered externals in long used professional computers often conceal well maintained insides. This is especially the case in schools, banks, offices and centers of administration and the key point is that such contexts employ maintenance contractors.
    Dirt also creates heat and heat and this is an enemy of effective use of electronics and longevity of components. The ultra-slim fad also is a big enemy because cooling air must not just circulate but be in a quantity sufficient to expel hot air and draw in cool air. FLIR photographs show hot spots on all sorts of computers (not just laptops) and we would not drive a vehicle which did not specifically cool components and just relied of general cooling, so why do we accept a generalist approach in our IT machines? The answer is because designers too frequently put style over substance and are lazy. Some strip I/Os to the bone and others try to reduce heat by fitting weak and weedy processors (boasted to be eco-friendly) but they pair these with very large capacity spinning hard drives and current-limited RAM so such machines appear brisk when new but very soon fill up with fragmented trash and become woefully slow, especially as OS sellers give little or no advice on how to avoid and dump bloat. Instead these machines have trial copies of management systems like Norton and McAfee. HP and cheaper end Dells do this. Apple simply failed to tackle much and heat for years and did not seem to realize that I/O ports actually assist with venting if not overloaded. Enter the hub and daisy chaining -- which are never shown in adverts. Apple is making slightly thicker laptops now and Lenovo and Dell are being less obsessed with slimness. A slow increase in I/Os is happening but it is very slow and SD card readers are still missing from far too many brands -- including the Acer which Andrew features here. It is a pity that Acer's 2023 range is inconsistent in this because the brand is known for good, honest value without pretension ranging to some high end machines of better functional flexibility than the Big Boys, who often make overlapping models simultaneously, which vary in different parts of the world.
    Making a well functioning machine from a few 'dead' ones is certainly time consuming but the result can often be an old laptop re-vamped to perform well beyond original spec even though such as Windows 11 will not recognize "security" requirements and some companies "white list" components. This is active sabotage of people's property and if companies have this sort of power to remotely inspect a given machine, what other things do they inspect?
    Adapted machines and avoidance of the tyranny of Microsoft, Mac and Android etc etc seem to beckon us to a more secure future with different operating systems waiting to be developed and they will compete in a different environment/time frame from the ageing giants.

    reminds me of the old school thinkpads (t420 t430 generation) where you can basically cobble together keyboards, touchpads and cpu across different generations to create your very own franken-thinkpad
    i remember there's also an eGPU mod that you can basically piggyback off the expresscard slot and get pci-e speeds

  • @TheSpotify95
    @TheSpotify95 Před 6 měsíci +1

    Not bad at all! Personally if you're going to go for a new keyboard, you might as well buy a new bezel to replace that broken one. A new bezel only costs about £10 or so for most laptops, especially older ones.
    This really makes me want to start upgrading and repairing PCs again. That screwdriver set looks nice, I might buy one for portable/travel use where I can't fit my Ifixit Manta set into my bag.
    Also, yes I always keep older components as well, just in case - such as RAM, hard disks/SSDs, wireless modules, etc.
    Also, for me, it's not worth going down the eGPU route. If you have to remove the Wi-Fi card then it no longer becomes a portable machine because external Wi-Fi dongles (albeit better than most older inbuilt cards) are fragile and susceptible to breaking (or the ports being snapped) if moved around a lot.

    Laptop EGPU support via m.2 must be related to which internal gpu is connected to the display. I assume that if the internal panel is connected to an intel or amd intregrated gpu an external GPU can output to the internal display. This is similar to how dedicated nvidia gpus in laptops merely process the graphics and it passes it back to typically an intel igpu to display into the display. If the main display is directly connected to the main display, the external gpu might not be able to pass the video back to the other dedicated internal GPU.

    • @TheSpotify95

    Great video!! Im just 14 and You realy inspired me in restoring laptops, i have a Toshiba Satellite L500-202 which was kept in my dads closet for probably more than 4 years, it had 2GB of Ram, a dead HDD, and an intel pentium (R) T4400. I disassembled the laptop, clean the motherboard, repasted the cpu, added carbon fiber vinyl wrap on the case, installed kingston 128GB SSD, and upgraded to 4 gb of RAM. My future upgrades I am going to make is upgrade to 8GB RAM, install an eGPU through mini pcie. I bought a power supply for cheap and I have the msi 1070, the gdc dock is still on the way(taking around15 days to get delivered). One thing Im confused is the compability of the eGPU.

      Hi bro, moldy LCD in some cases can be fixed. The problem is somewhere between the layers and the foils inside and in some cases that can be cleaned but in some not. I have clean LCD beofre to laptops, desktop monitors and some old phones.
