Evolution of Sunday School Music - A Cappella Medley

- A Cappella Arrangement by David Wesley
Buckle up! I hope you enjoy this nostalgic ride through 28 classic Sunday School songs. Since most of these songs have unknown authors and dates of origin, a chronological medley was pretty much impossible. Instead, I let the medley write itself - evolving gradually using common words and themes into its final form. Thanks so much to my sons, nieces, and nephews for their smiles and their colouring skills!

The accents, faces, and dynamic of each song was so accurate. I could just heard the original singers shining through.
I'm glad you left the baby talking/crying in there. I heard a phrase in regards to babies in churches one time that stuck with me: "A church without crying, is a church that is dying." We have to pass it on to the next generation. Great compilation as always.
@Wolfman, just commented on your comments. Thanks, and Amen!
So true! tome the sound of a baby crying is the sound of a church growing….
@@bethgarvin3855 Oh my gosh I never thought of that. Thank you for this comment! It is going to help me so much the next time I find myself getting irritated at a loud cry. I shouldn’t be irritated at the newest members of our church! Bless you!
The pastor of my old church used to say the same thing about kids. The church had been in a state of steady decline for decades, and it had been years since there had been any babies crying in that building. Hearing children crying was a turning point in the church's recovery.
@@heiditaylor6206 So I don't mislead anyone on accident. There is a difference between a baby being left to cry and cry and distracting from the sermon. But people should not get annoyed at a baby being heard when the mother or father is trying to take care of him/her. If the baby can't be quieted, then they can move to a care area, hallway, etc. But if you don't hear that crying, you have a generation missing in the church.
my husband and i were singing some of these to each other while reminiscing about church camp. the joy of simple melodies and lyrics while learning about God's love---priceless.
Lol I just got back from church camp
@CAROL,
I was singing along with you and also reminiscing about teaching VBS every Summer and Sunday school through the year. The children loved these songs and I absolutely adored this video!!
💞BRAVO David, and happy children. This video was such a JOY.
Awww that sounds wonderful ❤️ Praise God that you had the opportunity to go to church camp 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Why does the B.I.B.L.E. song have to be so country? 😂😂😂
Thanks for putting Father Abraham in here - it's a favourite on youth camp and we do all the actions.
I like that one too.
Last time I tried to do the whole song, I knew I was getting old. I got very winded. Lol.
What I love most is the encouragement of "child like faith" and enthusiasm in this medley. Singing these songs in youth is something fun and joyful. Now as a 40 year old, when I hear some of these songs especially Jesus Loves Me, I can't help but tear up knowing exactly what they mean. Unconditional love and forgiveness. And not just that, there's a purity and innocence within the songs that just feels good! God bless ❤✝️🕊🙏
Yes. We have to come to Jesus like little children. I loved this so much.
That transition from “Be Careful Little Eyes” to “I Am A CHRISTIAN” was incredible. 😂
I got the giggles on Eyes to C. 😉 The transition between Peace like a River and Deep and Wide was also amazing. Definitely a "wait...wha...?" moment for me, and I might be sorely tempted to try that on my class next week and see if they notice.
I also like the transition from Let It Shine to Pharaoh Pharaoh too. It's fun
@@lauraleeson9232 same here. I noticed the pretty cool transitions. Also he used different voices with each song too
Don’t forget My God is So Big to Do Lord Remember Me!
Lovely.. Lots of nostalgia!
This is so beautiful!
Being Nigerian and growing up in Nigeria, we sang most of these songs in Sunday School. Such fond memories 💖
I knew EVERY single one of those songs! So much of our theology is based on those words. What a legacy given to those of us who had the blessing of growing up in Sunday School. At nearly 59, I have been teaching Sunday School myself since I was 14!
I lost my Kindergarten Sabbath School teacher last week. I will miss her. I remember her singing many of these songs when I was very little. 💒
RIP Mrs. Densford (1951-2021)
71 here and a church musician all the way back to Sunday school. Remember everyone. No words can thank you enough for this wonderful journey of memories. I really miss those days Be blessed always and your kids as well.
Glad to be of service. Don’t forget to share!
💙💙💙
I dont know why my tears down watching this, I miss my childhood in Sunday School. How these songs are so strong, as a child, we're shaped to have a strong faith in Jesus Christ. Thank you David for covering this. You are such a blessing
I knew at least 90% of these songs because of kids church and kids camp. In fact the oil in my lamp song we had a few different versions of that that we would sing. Like we would make up our own lines for it. Like "give me wax on my board keep me surfing for the Lord" or "give me gas in my Ford keep me trucking for the Lord".
I remember singing the "give me gas in my Ford" verse! 😂
Was mine the only church that also has "Give me hair on my head, for my bald spot's getting red"? I feel like there others too that I no longer remember...
But I'd rather have a Chevrolet!!! 😂
🎵 Give hot sauce for my tacos, keep be burning...lol!
"Give me umption for my gumption, help me function-function-function" was one of my mum's lol
If you made an album with these songs full length, I would buy it! Lol
Me too!
Just found this but I so would
I neither live in the US nor in a english speaking country, but I knew some of these, which was surprising.
Well done.
Greetings from Germany
I was thinking the same thing. I'm from Brazil.
I know many of them in French too
Same😅 greetings from Austria :)
Same for the Netherlands
@Carekrieger, ich erinnere mich das Lied auf Deutsch, .. Ich habe Freude, Freude, Freude in meinem Herzen." :-)
Wow. Brilliant. I am 74 and from England. Knew them all. Thank you, What a ride!!
This is great. I love how he went southern for, "The Bible."
Yep - for the B-I-B-L-E belt!🤣
❤️❤️❤️ Bring back alot of childhood Sunday School days memories🙏
I am an anthropologist/archaeologist, so from a professional standpoint your videos are super interesting to me. But as a Christian, I am just so happy that you were blessed with this talent and are sharing it with the world! Your work is really fantastic. God bless you, and God bless the little children!
One way to make sure I won't hear anything you say is put a baby in the shot! Oh my-I cannot bear that much sweetness! I think I got a cavity watching your precious one, lol. Congratulations, what a joy! Thanks to all the kids who helped-good job everybody!
Of all your amazing creations, David, this one is a special favorite. So many happy memories of our children's growing-up years, and songs we all sang together and played at home. Having the children hold the signs is a wonderful addition.
Well, that was a sledgehammer of sentimentality!! I’m 40 years old and I haven’t thought about those songs in years, but I found myself not only singing along, but doing the motions!! Thank you for doing this! 😁
I still remember singing these when I was a kid. I mean I still do sing them, but without the little dance we did with them.
Same!!! My brother and i did a little dance too!!!
Never too old for these songs!! 🙂🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🙏
This was awesome! That one kid dancing was cute and your son is adorable! God Bless!
Oh my GOODNESS, THANK YOU! “Praise ye the Lord”. You are brilliant and I am so thankful for you. The children are precious. 💗🙏
My only question is....how did you keep from doing the motions??? Lol this was great
Right lol
I thought that too!
I did the clapping n all that :-)
Was fun taking my kids through those!
Huge amount of restraint was shown with Father Abraham and Deep & Wide.
Kind of wild how many of these I still remember...and equally as shocking the ones I hadn't even heard before.
After years of doing VBS there was one thing you forgot. You got to say “Faster!” at the end. Kids always said that and we had to do it super duper fast lol. Great video!
Not forgetting! There are lots of little things like “Where??”, “Yes sir!” And “Huh!” That were intentionally left out.🤪
I had all of this on an old Kidz Worship Track Tape - Cedarmont kids sang most of them... brings back good old memories!
WoooW!! Great job! I'm from Italy and in our italian Sunday School we sing most of these songswith our children! Amazing
Totally singing along!
Oh my, do you know how awesome you are, and how many hearts you touch? So many that only God knows how many!!
God Bless you!!
Lol, as a native Southerner your "Southern Accent" was downright hilarious! Loved the Compilation as well. Curious what inspired the Southern Drawl idea.
The B-I-B-L-E should theoretically be valued in the Bible Belt!🤣 One or two people were slightly offended by that choice of accent, so I’m glad you enjoyed it.
I thought ‘that’s so accurate’ lol
@@DavidWesley my first thought was Ugh, really... BUT; I live in Tx and used to attend a cowboy church, sooo it was fairly accurate.
G
Oh my goodness my entire childhood in one video!!!! Not a single song we didn’t sing!!!!!
Hi my brother in Christ you bring back a lots of memories of joy when my three children's were small there are the songs they sing in Sabbath school I was singing along with you rich blessings in Jesus name 🙏🙏👍👍🌻🌾🌿
1. I had forgotten half of these but instantly remembered every word. 2. You mentioned to do the exact voice of every Sunday school teacher we ever had.
We had a cassette tape series called "Wee Sing Bible songs" when my girls were little and most of these were on them! Great memories! 🥰😍
I just re-read this and realized that I didn't proofread it. 🤦♀️ I fixed it so it's not gibberish! 😂
I did not grow up hearing any of these songs, but I wanted my children to be immersed in Christ. I found the "Wee Sing Bible Songs" tape at Wal-Mart and it became a much-played CD at our house! Praise God! (I think I will buy one for all of my grandkids, now, lol)
I grew up listening to that tape! Just found it on CZcams and now play it for my kiddos. When I listen to it with my kids it is hard to be grumpy or down. It brings me happiness and joy to hear these songs from my childhood!
My daughter listened to the cedarmont kids
I grew up listening to most of Wee Sing tapes including most of these songs brought back memories!
I loved the entire series from Wee Sing. And I only got them after I was a teen but was always drawn to them
Out of the 28 songs, I only know 15 of them...So nostalgic. Sunday school rocks..VBS rocks.
Thanks for compiling it. Jesus bless you.
I actually knew them all! We would sing them week around and just called the church choruses.
You missed my favourite as a kid, If I were a Butterfly
I remember most of those songs, my Sunday School took a very long time to modernise, hehe!
I did consider that song, but it was newer than everything else on the list (1974), not as “classic” - though it was a favourite of mine as a child.
OH MY FAVORITE TOO!!!! Looooove that one!
Oh my, there are songs there that I have not heard in years! I would say a good half of them I remember singing in Sunday School. Thank you so much for a walk down memory lane.
Great job! My favorite is “Be Careful Little Eyes” when your nephew's big eyes shift after you sing “your Father up above is looking down in love”
I didn’t realize how many songs we actually had back then! 💕this is so great!
Absolutely priceless. Kids worship is so precious. Praise God for our kids church teams right round the world!!
I sing with the kids at my church and it is so much fun. They have so much energy and their own favorite songs they want to sing.
Totally awesome Sunday school praise and worship 🙌
Oh what Joy I have in my heart after hearing this musical Masterpiece of my favorite Sunday School songs! I knew every song!👍💞 You're Amazing, I loved every key change, beatbox and your great humor. Your family made this Perfect too.😘 Thank you SO MUCH David!.✝️
I have 33 Grandkids & three God children. They needed to hear these wonderful songs as well as us Adults.👌🙏🎵✝️ 🙌
👍❤️💯
I watched this with a silly grin on my face, so lovely to hear these simple but effective tunes and words.
I loved your different ‘personalities’ and accents - such a fun medley, David, well done!
… oh I also loved how baby Auren tried to eat his song title and your sweet niece who just had to dance along to your singing!
The world news is so terrible today. Then I found this. Now I have a big smile on my face. Thank you.
this brings sooooo much joy in my heart ,reminding me of the old times when my papa would take me to school on a piggy back & we'd sing these songs all the way ,"He's Got the World" was our favourite song !!😭
Another great job David! Folks will be blessed.
Amen
WoW! Sadly I never went to Sunday school as a kid, so some of the songs I am hearing for the first time. Including the kids... Absolutely brilliant. I only wish some of the songs were longer.
Wow, one of the patrons I’ve been hearing about! God bless.
I'm sure you can find them on CZcams. Sure they might not be mr Wesley singing them but im sure you can find some good ones.
The songs are longer. He is just putting together pieces of them that fit together musically. As someone else said, they are likely available on CZcams particularly on children’s Christian music sites. Hope you get to enjoy them as I have all my life.
Though my family was always Christian, we didn't go to church much until I was in my teens, so it took me a while to catch up on some of these songs, but I recognized most of them when watching this video.
@ Wayno Guerrini, you can find Sunday School songs and Bible songs in their longer form on CZcams from a variety of sources. Cedarmont Kids was one of my children's favorites: czcams.com/video/FSUeeOWauB0/video.html
WOW!!! Just sent this to all our grandchildren!!!!
I remember riding the bus with my friends to church singing these!!! Wow!!!
So many memories as a kid of the 70’s & 80’s growing up in church and then working in kids ministries in the 90’s! Love the melody!
I was raised in a Christian Mexican home and these were all familiar until I realized that I only listened to the Spanish versions by Manuel Bonilla 😆
Wow. Taking me back to Children’s Church at Pocatello Church of the Nazarene in the early 80’s! Every one of them! Thank you for the memories. Great songs and messages. Only one that was missing was a”Stop and Let Me Tell You”.
In my church we call it Sabbath school but we share the same wonderful songs.
I love that you include your children, nieces and nephews too. This is something they will treasure for the rest of their life.
David, I LOVE THIS! Absolutely LOVE this. Hilarious and fun. I remember every one of these songs, grew up singing them -- except for "Blind Man," which my kids sing from camp. So much fun. The KIDS on this video are adorable. It couldn't be better. And my husband's name is David, too, so "Only a Boy Named David" had us cracking up. You are a riot and a blessing. Thanks for making this video. God bless you and yours!
This is brilliant David! Takes me down memory lane! 😊
Such an effort putting all these songs together! Thank you!
To God alone be praised! Amen! 🙏
This is very special. I have taught kids all these songs for years. Thanks!
I enjoyed this David! I loved your accents and seeing your sons, nephews and nieces. I especially loved seeing Auren chatting and clapping away! Here's to this going viral for His Glory!!
It's really cool I'm recalling all those old songs that were sung by me and my friends with great fun Thank so much for this let God be blessed more through your works for him
Ha! Looks like Baby Oren is still singing and clapping happily to the songs! Love, love, love this!!💓💖. Love the kids dancing and smiling, such a treat! Love your goofy voices & expressions! Will have to watch this over about 20x more. Never heard of some of these songs, like Father Abraham. Anyways, thanks for all your dedication and hard work (looks easy & fun to us viewers). GOD bless you, David, and all your little sign holders. GOD bless the USA, & GOD bless Israel. "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem, may they prosper, that love her." Ps 122:6. Tisha B'Av after sundown til tomorrow at sundown. 💔. I will be praying and fasting for His glory to fill the 3rd temple. Ps:. Hey, isn't that "Pharoh, Pharoh" song Bully, Bully!??
Pharaoh Pharaoh was based on Louie Louie. :)
@@DavidWesley Ah, that's it! Knew it was an oldie from the 50's! But I couldn't remember the song title, maybe since that's 10 years before my time (tee hee!). PS:. Sorry, wrote Oren instead of Auren! That's how my ears heard it. 😬🙃
Amazing!!! I knew almost all the songs and so many of them were songs I sang as a child (I'm 31).
Wow!! So many memories come flooding back 💗
Excellent work. The kids look like they had fun too!!! You always do EXCELLENT WORK! They get a chance to hold the cards this time. LOL!!!
This gave me veggie-tales vibes. Thank you 😂
I didn't know all of these, but I'm old (61) so maybe some are from after my time, and I also like to hear the ones I didn't know. They are great songs no matter what age we are! Thanks for the added facial expressions and humorous accents!
The newest song in the medley is 50 years old, so any lack of familiarity won’t be relates to your age!🤣
That ending was sublime🎉🎉❤
This is a nostalgia shot - I loved this medley. Thank you for sharing this David. God Bless!
Such smiles have filled my heart hearing this melody. Thank you for this blessing.
I can relate, Sabbath school in Kenya. thank you David
Way fun! Classics that remain true today👍👍👍
This is such a fun medley! Using the words, not just the music to transition was very well played! Thanks for the childhood memories. I will be sharing this and listening over and over again.
I love this. It sounds like you had a whole lot of fun making this and that makes it so much better!
Omg as an elementary kid and going to a Baptist Church this brought back memories of Sunday school and Bible School
Morning David!
Pls singing Jesus keep me near!
Thank You! 😅🤗
creative and intertaining yet teaching. keep on this service. can't stop laughing at how you song some songs like children
Such memories--I knew all but one. Guess that comes from teaching young children in church camp, Vacation Bible School, and in a Christian dayschool--thanks for your ministry!
You are delightful! God bless your music and family!
And I am about to spend all day watching all of your incredible videos!
As usual amazing. This time wanna appreciate for your video and editing skills. Beautiful❤
I love this 😂😌 we sang Father Abraham almost every week in Sunday School
This was just as wonderful as I expected--and all your helpers did a fantastic job--because trying to eat a sign is 'feasting on the Word'--right? 🥰
My childhood Sunday school flashing before me....brings a smile to my heart and face...such simple tunes and lyrics that made indelible marks on many of our hearts...and no doubt for generations to come. Childhood faith formation at its best.
I was suddenly 5 years old again in miss Mary's Sunday school class..... 57 years ago. Thank you.
My favorite is father Abraham Nicely done!👌🏽
He's got the whole world in his hands indeed! All of these songs we may have learned as lads and lassies but as adults we should sing some of these songs more often. Well done David. Thank you!😊
These songs are all in my heart and I am between laughing and crying right now.
Thank you to all the children...great job!!! Your son is so sweet too. Children are so precious.❤
Love this!! Wonderful start to my day. I knew all but one. Even did the hand motions. Thank you!!
Missed zaccheus was a wee little man
Oh, it was on my list but I just couldn’t make it work anywhere!
Okay this brought back soooo much memories and I enjoyed every bit of this! This has uplifted my spirit. Blessings to you and your family sir.
Unbelievable...you made our day. We can't stop listening, laughing, and praising. Bless you!
That's so great! We don't hear some of these songs anymore. I guess the kids prefer the new ones. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for this medley. It was especially fun to watch the children as you sang... you've certainly got a lovely set of children there! It's good to know that they are surrounded by meaningful music and hope that they may all one day have these songs in their own hearts. God's blessings be upon you!
This is good work! We can see how much effort was put into this.
Absolutely amazing and so uplifting ✝️💗 🙏🏼 thank you again!!! What a talent and gift God has blessed you with ✝️
Thank you Sir for sharing your faith and talent to us.
What a great way to start my morning David! Amazingly done! Brings back many memories. I'm forwarding it to our Sunday School Director!😀 (sharing it too). You are such a blessing David. Looks like you had fun doing this! What a wonderful video for children (and adults!🤗). Thank you!!!
You got that right. This was so awesome.
Once again you've nailed it. Well done David. Love the addition of your family members! Blessings man.
Glad you enjoyed it. Make sure to show it to Kim!
Thank you for this compilation of Sunday School songs. I’m going to start teaching my granddaughter these songs. I totally forgot some of them!!!!
Sing along with 80% of songs here 😍😍😍🤭🤭 love it💗
