  • People are always comparing Greyson Nekrutman to legendary Big Band drummers. And it makes sense because these are the drummers he’s studied for years.
Greyson has tastefully borrowed licks from drummers like Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson, Sonny Payne, and more to develop his own style. There's SO much you can learn by studying the legends of Big Band Drumming -- an era where drummers stole the show.
While Greyson has taken care to build on the concepts he’s borrowed from the legends, in this video, he talks about his major influences and who inspires him while he develops his own sound.
    Lesson Index:

Sonny Payne is absolutely one of the greatest drummers ever and I really love his playing in all situations, big band, small band! Just dig his playing on Count Basie & The Kansas City Seven Impulse record from 1962, pure gold to me.

I been studying Rufus speedy Jones for yrs neither him or buddy used tricks they muscled threw it with there left hands. No push pull technique just all left hand muscles I find traditional grip to be great workout for the left hand to get stronger and add more speed when you do get into match grip.

I’m going to get flamed for this, but this has little to nothing to do with big band drumming. This was a few showy soloing tricks. These are all great drummers, of course, but it doesn’t say anything about the way they played big band. I would hope the course gets into the actual techniques involved in playing with a real big band. I play in one and a featured solo for the drums is the least of my concerns. Reading, dynamics, setting up section and ensemble figures, etc are all way more important. BTW, listen to Mel Lewis. He was the king. Buddy knew it, too.

If the title was “Solo tricks to enhance your showmanship from famous big band drummers” it would be much more accurate.

@@DavidOakesMusic Hi Guys.. Kudos to Greyson for carrying the big band torch.... I personally have sat 20 feet away from Sonny Payne (with Basie), Roy Haynes, Rufus "Speedy" Jones, Elvin Jones, Louie Bellson, and quite a few others of that era. Drumming is subjective to each person, however, as amazing as these guys were, witnessing Buddy Rich live 20 feet away was something I don't think I'll ever see again. What does not come thru in all the CZcams solos of Buddy is his miraculous musicality with the way he played, that's the X factor for me, and it does not come thru too well in the videos. Tough person, absolutely. But don't let that diminish his quality as a musician, drummer and bandleader. He was a phenom and could play brilliantly on anything. One night, at a poorly attended concert I was at in London, he was in a playful mood, he found an old pair of thick canvas gardening gloves on the stage, so putting them on, he played the entire West Side Story chart, drum solo etc. with these damn gloves on! It sounded exactly the same as it normally did. It was absolutely astounding, and he did it without thinking about it. You had to be there. One of a kind.
